As a fan of RPGs, I'm always on the lookout for RPGs for my handheld system so I can play them on long trips. A few that I've played:
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance: Although I put over 100 hours into this game, it's not very good. It was my first strategy RPG and the battles are insanely slow. Not a bad game by any means, but not a particularly good one, either.
Fire Emblem: A very fun game, although your characters can die permanantly. Nothing I can't get over, though. I'm considering purchasing the follow-up.
Tactics Ogre: Knight of Lodis: I haven't played very far into this one, but it's similar to FFTA in that the battles take far too long. That said, it doesn't have some of FFTA's other flaws.
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga: A lot of people really like this game. Personally, I couldn't stand it. The battle system is boring for me, and the humor.. wasn't funny.
Has anyone played any RPGs for GameBoy, PSP, DS, or even Game Gear that they've enjoyed? What are your favorite handheld RPGs.
I reserve the right to be entirely wrong.

I in no way like Golden Sun, but a whole lot of people swear by it, so you might like it.
Also, Lufia 3 is for Game Boy Color and Lufia 4 is for Game Boy Advance. Lufia 3 sucks, but I hear Lufia 4 is good, and I know 1 and 2 for SNES are good.
Plus I think there's a bunch of Nintendo DS ones coming out. Tales of the Tempest is coming out for it, but I don't know if that's going to come here.

I would get FFIV and FF1&2 dawn of souls for GBA. Also Breath of Fire II is one of the best old school rpgs for gba. Lufia's decent, I also got bored with golden sun. definitely get fire emblem 2 , that game is sick. and you know you miss out a lot of stuff if you let people die in fire emblem? If you like fire emblem at all I'd recommend all the advance wars, they are like crack, thoough not exactly rpgs. Shining soul II is good, although more of the same tactical battles. Also Riviera is a really good gameboy rpgs. I also played the hell out of ffta and also vaguely disliked it the whole time.
I really liked mario and luigi but it doesn't get good for a while. the ds version is even better.

The original Pokemon games. Yes, laugh at me, but look past its kiddy appearance: it has a decent and strong base of story and plot, the battle system is simple, fun and well made, the environment is large (considering it's a Gameboy game nearing its ten-year mark), it has several extras in the game and the level-up system is very good.

CompManJX3, if you want a more unconventional RPG, check out these Atlus titles:
Summon Night 2
Yggdra Union
Riviera, the Promised Land
I've been enjoying these a lot, and they offer a nice break from conventional RPG gameplay. Their presentation, as far as graphics and sound are concerned, is also superb!
The megaman battle network games are also great. I only played to the second game (Megaman Battle network 2)and it's great. The fighting system is unique.
Bomberman Tournament is great. I played it a while ago, and while the "pet" system is extremely similar to pokemon, it's a great game that eats up hours of time. Definitely worthwhile.
