I've just listened to my first official qualifier of over-hyped album: Vampire Weekend "S/T". What's so great about this album, it's boring if you ask me?

I'd have to agree with you completely on that one. That album is so saccharine it makes me wanna puke when I listen to it.

As someone else already said on these boards, it makes me happy and that's all that matters. It kind of reminds me of New Magnetic Wonder from last year. Are they great albums with emotional depth and thought provoking lyrics? Hell no! But, they put a smile on my face and get my feet tapping every time.

It's the only album I've heard so far this year that I would classify as a "feel good" album.

The songs are strong enough for me to not care that it's slightly saccharine. And it's not that bad in that regard...it's got nothing on say, Jens Lekman's last album.

Q: Vampire Weekend overhyped?

A: Absolutely not. In fact, the press who are singing from the rooftops are totally on the money.
These guys have it all, strong melodies, unmannered vocals, brilliant arrangements, great scansion, the best of influences and clearly an enormous appetite to take on the mantle of best band in the world.
These lads are the real deal. Finally, after yrs of falsestarts with Spoons, Mouses, Decemberists et al, a genuine artist for the ages.

Though pleasant enough, I don't think Vampire Weekend deserves to be mentioned in the same sentence as either Spoon or Modest Mouse. Both those bands have already proven themselves to be hugely important and influential bands in the last decade and have released numerous classic albums.

Vampire Weekend has released one decent album that sounds like Paul Simon.

Oh definitely agree. It's certainly a promising debut, but it remains to be seen how they follow it up. I'll be looking forward to it.

Another thing with regards to the album, does anyone else think their song 'Boston' is much, much better than the kinda crappy 'One Blake's got a New Face'? It was on the original leak, but got taken off for some reason and replaced on the official release. Slightly puzzling.

Boston is a terrific song, as is One. Filled with humorous lyrics, sly witticisms musically, and a clever use of space, I don't mind the swap.

Nothing against you Ish, but I spit out my coffee when I read that Vampire Weekend is better than Spoon, Modest Mouse, AND The Decemberists. That makes me want to throw up everywhere.

I don't like Vampire Weekend at all, but I'm not quite sure whether it's my ears or the backlash that's listening to them. I'll probably like them next year. (This coming from a guy who hated Nirvana as a freshman in college back in '93 - and several years later realized how great they were.)

I'm looking for Russian Militant Black Metal. Semi-good production is a plus, as are clean vocals (if kept to a minimum). Also looking for vocals in Russian. Basically like a Russian version of Absurd...

They're pretty good. A good album for sunny days or when I'm in a good mood, but it is revolutionary or anything. I really can't get enough love or hate worked up about this album to call them overrated or underrated. They are just ok.

I agree with "Boston" being a puzzling choice to be cut from the final release. Quite similar (for me) to "Cuntry Boys and City Girls" being cut from the Fratellis' album.

I wouldn't call Vampire Weekend's album overhyped, especially since it hasn't even gotten much mainstream attention yet. I doubt most people who love the album (besides Ish) think it's a monumental album, just a great listen and a promising start for an interesting band.

I picked up Vampire Weekend the other day because it was 8 bucks. I'm not disapointed, but I don't think it will make my top ten list this year. Probably just listen to it once every few months for the next few years and then archive it.

I definatly saw several Vampire Weekend commercials on MTV. I would qualify that as mainstream attention.

Harrison owns McCartney? See mate, I stop reading each time I see your handle, so I am unable to comment on your clearly absurd defense of those minor league acts you mention. Wink
