I have a child in my care and would like to expose her to something beyond Disney divas. It's hard to find solid recs because most people who have very developed taste (us!) don't have time for this category, but I think it is a great use of our abilities. Please share what you know?
I'd expose them to Deerhoof's Offend Maggie. And that isn't an insult by the way. Satomi has a voice that a kid would love to hear. Also, maybe Sigur Ros' latest; just don't show them the cover!
Also, Kimya Dawsom came out with a kid's album. I haven't heard it but saw it did get some worthy praise.

I knew someone would pull a stunt, I just didn't expect it from you, theelfpat.

Justin Roberts is a good choice for kids. Our 2 daughters, now 4 and 6, have loved Yellow Bus and Great Big Sun and he's a good enough songwriter and clever lyricist to keep Mom and Dad interested. Otherwise, I like making mix CDs for my kids of adult music. For daytime, they go for anything with the poppy, jumpy "new Wave" 80s sound. Vampire Weekend has been a recent favorite -- but there's that F word problem in "Walcott" I have to edit out. They also love the stomp of the newest Sons and Daughters.
Oh, a couple years back my kids (then 6 and 3) really enjoyed that They Might Be Giants "Here Come the ABC's" ( I liked it too) and then that first Backyardigan's release was a crowd pleaser the next year (again, I really liked it too)
They both also enjoyed, and still do, Chutes Too Narrow, by The Shins... I guess it was the glistening harmonies and quirky pop hooks... and Dig Your Own Hole by the Chemical Brothers... we all must surrender to those block rockin' beats...
I don't have much for recent releases as they both have cultivated their own tastes that we cater to now...

Another "adult" one my girls love and request is Loney Dear (specifically Loney, noir,, most specifically "I Am John" and "Saturday Waits"). No dirty words. Very sweet. Goes down like good candy for old and young.
Listening to YMCK's FAMILY GENESIS and the Zazen Boys album makes me wonder if japanese pop wouldn't be the best starting point ever for kids to get into cool music..

That's a good one. It might be a bit too mellow to keep a kid interested without a little prompting though. Depends on the kid, maybe?

When I uploaded the disc for this album, iTunes classified it under "Childrens Music." I don't know if the band makes that decision or what, but I found it both humorous and spot-on.
I could also see kids enjoying The Go! Team, Architecture In Helsinki, and some Unicorns songs.
It's even quite enjoyable for older generations as there are some puns/jokes that would only register for older folk.
It may help if you're Canadian too, as there tends to be Canadian jokes thrown in.
BNL opened a hotline before the album came out asking for people to phone in saying what their favourite snack was... some bigtime Canadian stars like Geddy Lee (Rush), Sarah Mclaughlan, Jason Priestly, Gordon Lightfood phoned in, and their responses were pretty hilarious, especially Gordon's...
"Hi, I'm Gordon Lightfood, and my favourite snack is pasta!"
