Also check out Sunz Of Man, Killah Priest and Hell RAZAH. Right now, some of the affiliates make better tighter Hip-Hop then the original clan members.
I would avoid the Bobby Digital stuff. Pretty bad imo.
How dare you contradict me! Heh, nah it's all good. I actually agree with you about the affiliates making better music than most of the clan members at the mo. But I reckon that only Ghostface's later albums are worth getting though. Liquid Swords is essential, but the GZA's later stuff is mediocre at best.
And lay off Bobby Digital...
i second Borachon. Ghostface is the most interesting post-debut and GZA post-Liquid Swords is so-so. never went as far as the affiliates though. maybe i'll check a couple out.
Mix a little folly with your plans: It is sweet to be silly at the right moment.
Wow. For fans of the Wu, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest (and other Native Tongues stuff), and hip-hop in general.
I just had a guy let me borrow this. I haven't listened to it yet though. Might have to toss it in tonight.
I had a stick of CareFree gum, but it didn't work. I felt pretty good while I was blowing that bubble, but as soon as the gum lost its flavor I was back to pondering my mortality.

I just got the Pixies' Surfer Rosa (along with the Come on Pilgrim EP) and I am pretty impressed with it. I love "Where Is My Mind?" (and now I sort of get M.I.A.'s "20 Dollar"...) I find "Tony's Theme" kind of annoying, but the rest of both albums is solid. I wish I would have checked this one out earlier.

Woah how did miss this? My essential Wu-Tang catalog includes: All the Wu-Tang albums (listen in order of release!) GZA "Liquid Swords" Raekwon "Only Built 4 Cuban Lynx" Method Man "Tical" & "4:21...the Day After" ODB "Return to the 36th Chamber" Gravediggaz(rza) "6 Feet Deep" Ghostface "Supreme Clientèle" & "Fishscale"
Sadly I think their better days have passed them by, but all these are excellent.

I listened to this one a while back and thought it was godawful. I can't even begin to understand how people could like an album like this. It just sounds like some shitty neighborhood garage band to me.

I don't know. When Frank says "He bought me a soda...he bought me a soda and then he tried to molest me in the parking lot. Yep! Yep! Yep! Yep!" I can't help but laugh. I guess that's part of what made them so great: they knew how and when to be funny.

RavingLunatic, please don't abandon the Pixies if you only heard Surfer Rosa and Come On Pilgrim. It took me longer to get into those, and the Albini production on Surfer Rosa definitely plays into the band sounding like they were recorded in a garage (that's kind of the point for him; he doesn't "produce" albums, he "records" them).
Get Doolittle or Bossanova or even Trompe Le Monde for something that sounds more professional. If you've already heard them and still don't like the Pixies, then listen to the Breeders and Frank Black's Teenager of the Year... I'm not giving up on you. We can do this.

From what I've been able to Gather, I think you're right that Surfer Rosa was probably the worst album of theirs for me to start with, and it's the only one I've heard. It is entirely possible that I would like their other stuff. Still, I think their style in general is not something I dig. I'm just not much of a fan of harsh-sounding rock. Maybe someday I'll get around to trying their other stuff, but I'm swamped as it is with stuff I really want to hear but haven't had the time for.

Knowing RL's dislike of all things moderately harsh, I can say with certainty he won't like any of the Pixies albums. Maybe he'd like some of Frank Black's more countryish stuff with the Catholics, but not the Pixies.

Damn... What about Bossanova though? That's their most "accessible" album... Just skip the second track (the name escapes me because i'm exhausted right now, i've been up since 5:30 this morning, BLAH!).
I think it's just my absolute love of the Pixies that's doing this.

I like a lot of harsh rock, but I never got into Surfer Rosa either, except for a handful of tracks. I liked Doolitle a little more but not enough to keep buying more Pixie albums. They are one of the 'sacred' bands I just don't get, at least yet.
