What are your qualifications to be a "real music fan"? To me, it would be anyone who enjoys music, regardless of what kind of music. Obviously, we don't share the same definition.

Last year, I kind of new Someone Great and The Past is a Grotesque Animal were widely liked and would be in top 5 at the end of the year. I don't see that this year. Am I correct or is their a couple songs that everyone loves that I'm missing?
I've seen a lot of mentions of "White Winter Hymnal" by Fleet Foxes and several of MGMT's "Electric Feel".

"White Winter Hymnal" is as close as we've come to a perfect three-minute pop song in decades. And "Electric Feel" is just a monster jam. Shame that MGMT only has three tolerable tracks...
I don't know if they count, seeing as they haven't been officially recorded or released yet, but the two new Grizzly Bear songs ("While You Wait for the Others" and "Two Weeks") have been universally adored.
Also, the Dodos' "Fools".

"Skene" from The Bug's London Zoo is just... sick. Probably the best song of the year so far, big time. Sick.

I'm back to lists.
1. Mykonos - Fleet Foxes An utterly beautiful song. Great breakdown too (Brother, you don't need to turn me away...) 2. Raise Me Up - Hercules and Love Affair New age disco with some amazing vocals from Antony. 3. Ready For The Floor - Hot Chip More perfect techno pop from HC. 4. Lights & Music - Cut Copy Reminds me alot of 80's arena pop, catchy tune that won't leave my head. 5. Dr. Carter - Lil Wayne "You ain't Vince Young so don't clash with the Titans." 6. Electric Feel - MGMT A great sounding falcetto combinded with the most stupidly catchy chorus of the year. 7. Gamma Ray - Beck One of Beck's best singles ever. 8. Bixby Canyon Bridge - Death Cab For Cutie Amazing opener on a shitty album. 9. Constructive Summer - The Hold Steady This song just sounds like summer to me. 10. Blue Ridge Mountains - Fleet Foxes Best song on the best album of the year. 11. Machine Gun - Portishead A killer back beat with a great vocal performance. 12. Borken Heartbeats Sound Like Breakbeats - Los Campsinos! One of the most dynamic pop songs of the year. 13. Comfortable - Lil Wayne (feat. Babyface) At first a sincere and loving Lil Wayne sounds like bullshit, but Babyface's rephrase sells it. 14. Winter - Dodos A great use of horns to liven up the Dodos guitar n' drums sound. Great lyrics to boot. 15. M79 - Vampire Weekend The violen hook is gorgeous. Sweet sounding without giving you a toothache. 16. Modern Guilt - Beck Very old fashioned sounding. Almost a complete opposite of Beck's last album. 17. What Up Man - Cool Kids Most memorable beat of the year. Clever lyrics. 18. Kids - MGMT Terrible lyrics are made up for by a terrific everything else. 19. The Rip - Portishead Ambient, creepy, and VERY Portishead. 20. Lost! - Coldplay Guilty pleasure of the year for sure.

I heard "Grounds for Divorce" by Elbow on the radio today. Sounded pretty good, very bluesy. Better than most of the stuff that station plays (see: Jack Johnson, the Fray, bands who want to be like those performers). Then again, it's the only station that isn't Butt Rock Central and plays current music in Atlanta. Fuck Atlanta radio.
------ Aren't there any girls out their who like good music? I need to and want to meet them. My favorite bands are Overkill River, The Nife, Songs:Ohio, and Nuetral Milk Hotel. Please let me know if your into indy music and like to go to show's and drink beer's and makeout.

I'm there with you on that one, Chamberk. Atlanta radio blows something fierce. That's why I love my car radio iPod adapter...but which mainstream Atlanta station played "Grounds for Divorce"? That song doesn't feature T-Pain at all!
back to the topic at hand: it has taken several listens to sink in, but Sun Kil Moon's April truly is something to behold. Especially "Lost Verses" - what a fantastic opener.
Songs in A&E is another one that's taken me a good while to really appreciate. It didn't click until I woke up one morning with a rather vicious hangover and "Sweet Talk" came up on shuffle. I'm fairly certain that the song singlehandedly brought me back to the realm of the living.

Blitzen Trapper released the title track from their new album Furrr, and I would give it my vote for one of the best songs of the year. Very well written, and well played. I was ready to be disapointed.

So far my favourite song from the Cure is the b-side to "The Perfect Boy" (which is also a great song) called "Without You". It's just full of so much glee!

The description didn't tip you off? It's DaveFM, aka Atlanta Yuppie Radio. My iPod car adapter is busted... as is my car's CD player. So I've got an old and warped tape or the radio to pick and choose from.

If my cd player ever breaks I have an emergency cassete single of "Bad Boys" in the glove box.
