No Drive-By Truckers in here? How come?

Certainly, with 12 albums on your list, you could find room for Drive-By Truckers.

I haven't picked it up yet. Based on my other albums, should I?

Based on your inclusion of Bon Iver, Mountain Goats, and British Sea Power, I'd say yes. It's a very strong southern rock album with some country influence.

It's streaming at the following link, along with Xiu Xiu and Black Mountain:

I can't stand it. It is about two less amplifiers away from straight-up country.

My Rough List:

Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel, Atlas Sound
Made in the Dark, Hot Chip
Women As Lovers, Xiu Xiu
Vampire Weekend, Vampire Weekend
The Evening Descends, Evangelicals
Distortions, The Magnetic Fields

Atlas Sounds is WAY in the lead so far. It's going to take some fine ass album to takes the uno spotto.

Well, like a father whose son just choked down his peas, I'm proud of you for trying it.

I guess there's too much Garth Brooks and Lyle Lovett in my collection to let a little steal guitar bother me.

No. Julia Roberts tried that and it only ended in bitter, bitter divorce.

Yep. And, I'm man enough to admit it. Wink

Think about it. Garth brought rock 'n roll energy to country (and Aerosmith, KISS, and Billy Joel covers).

Lyle has always been in his own little genre, throwing in big band, gospel, and alternative influences.

Neither are mainstream country. They are better than country because they more than country.

I'm pretty sure he's commenting on their sound and not their status.

I wouldn't know what he even sounds like.. I haven't heard him since I was around 5 or 6. But, judging by what someone seemingly knowledgeable said, he brings a lot more to the table than most mainstream country acts.

All I know is that he wore horrid lightning shirts.

It depends on what you consider mainstream. If you mean album sales and radio air play, there's nobody more mainstream than Garth. Sold more albums than any other American artist, no matter what genre.

But, if you mean country establishment, Garth was never part of the mainstream. The country establishment went along with him because he sold a shitload of records and almost singlehandedly saved the music industry in the nineties. But, there's always been this attitude that, "That's not country, that's just Garth."

Now, we should get back to discussing indie music or bashing P4k before there's an upheaval on these boards. Wink

I'd rather see actual discussion on this board than more Pitchfork arguing. But that's just me...

1. Mountain Goats - Heretic Pride
2. Vampire Weekend - s/t
3. Destroyer - Trouble in Dreams

Everything else is kind of just there.

Has anyone else noticed that so much more music is available so early on in the year compared to the year before? People here already have compiled a top 10+ list.

yeah it does feel like a ton of music is available right now. most of the stuff due out feb-march has been leaked (march seems to have a ton of great releases). after one month of the year i have gone through around 40-45 albums! that has never been the case so early in the year for me. hooray for leaks.

It's way too early to rank these, but...

Vampire Weekend makes me happy. Any album that makes me smile when I listen to it is automatically dear to me.

The Helio Sequence is growing on me. The Magnetic Fields, on the other hand, is quickly wearing off. Nada Surf is still bland. Hot Chip didn't impress me. Cat Power is better than the lukewarm reviews. Hello, Blue Roses is very good and whoever doesn't like Sydney Vermont's lovely voice should just get over it already. Smiler

Still need to hear: Dengue Fever and Bon Iver.
