Nope. I pretend to, though; my girlfriend goes there and a lot of my friends do too. I live walking distance from Franklin Street and if I go out, it's usually there. I go to a local comm college called Durham Tech. I'm making the big move to New York in the fall to transfer to City College.

I'm deciding between there and UVA for next year... what do you think of Chapel Hill?

Freaking beautiful. Great weather, and a liberal and cultural oasis in an otherwise very conservative, southern state. Although a bit fratty, the downtown scene is still a lot of fun. Some great restaurants, indie movie theaters and two great places for live music in the Cat's Cradle and Local 506.

As far as the university goes, the only complaints I've heard about classes are those that are run by TAs. As I'm sure you know, it has good academics and lots of extracurriculars, if you're interested. Athletics are amazing, especially basketball, and next year will surely be fun to get drunk and watch games as Hansborough is returning for another championship run. There are SO many more college girls than guys at Carolina, too, and many many many of them are gorgeous.

I got in to Carolina for the fall, but I want to try a semester in a city. I love it so much in this area that I'll most likely be back in spring 09 to finish out my schoolin at Carolina.

Well, I'll vouch for Charlottesville being a great place too. I don't live there, but I'm not too far away and I love visiting the downtown when I get the chance. Lucky you, getting to choose between UVA and UNC! Visit both and see which appeals to you the most - either way you're still in the ACC. Smiler

i have lots of friends at unc. chapel hill is gorgeous and always feels like home every time i visit. cat's cradle gets a lot of good acts like dude said. the one time i visited uva it was raining, so i didn't get a very good impression, but it has a very good reputation as well. good luck with your decision.

What's this one like? I've never listened to the Silver Jews before.

It's like Johnny Cash if he had a sense of humor. David Berman (the brains behind Silver Jews) is one of the most brilliant lyricists IMO. As for the music it is alt. countryish with elements of early 1990s punk sensibility. Just a great album with so many clever songs especially "Party Barge" and "Strange Victory, Strange Defeat".

Huh? Have you ever listened to Johnny Cash?

I had a stick of CareFree gum, but it didn't work. I felt pretty good while I was blowing that bubble, but as soon as the gum lost its flavor I was back to pondering my mortality.

I know. This is a strange statement.

Not a lot going on for me at all. Hardly even worth listing, but here's the few album I've gotten into this year.

1. Murder by Death - Red of Tooth and Claw
2. High Places - 03/07 - 09/07
3. M83 - Saturdays = Youth
4. Titus Andronicus - The Airing of Grievances

Truly not much of a list, but there are things coming out that I'm excited about along with a few things that I totally missed:

Wolf Parade - At Mount Zoomer
My Morning Jacket - Evil Urges
Spiritualized - Songs in A&E
The Roots - Rising Down
Man Man - Rabbit Habbits

I had a stick of CareFree gum, but it didn't work. I felt pretty good while I was blowing that bubble, but as soon as the gum lost its flavor I was back to pondering my mortality.

People sometimes associate The Silver Jews with Pavement. I don't exactly hear it myself, but I haven't listened to an awful lot of Silver Jews. Just thought I would pass on the unverified opinions of others.

Malkmus, Nastanovich and Pavement drummer Steve West have all been in Silver Jews at one time or another. That's where the association comes from.

I need to update my list:

01 :> Wolf Parade - At Mt. Zoomer*
02 :> Fleet Foxes - Ragged Wood (or S/T)
03 :> Dodos - Visiter
04 :> Destroyer - Trouble In Dreams
05 :> Hurcules & Love Affair - S/T
06 :> Atlas Sound - Let The Blind...
07 :> Vampire Weekend - S/T
08 :> Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours
09 :> High Places - 03_07 - 09_07
10 :> Times New Viking - Rip It Off

*This is no hyperbole. I genuinely enjoy this and I've been saturating myself in it with gusto. No ill side-effects yet.

EDIT: Oops; forgot to put Destroyer back up. It's there now, and The Drive-By Truckers are in the penalty box pending further review. I just get the itchy feeling that the album is just a bit too scattershot, but we'll see.

Haven't thought much about my list so far this year, probably due to my relative lack of options. Much I was surprised on the quality when I thought about it. Heres 1.0:

1) Fleet Foxes - s/t
2) Portishead - "Third"
3) Dodos - "Visiter"
4) Wolf Parade - "At Mount Zoomer"
5) Cut Copy - "In Ghost Colours"
6) Vampire Weekend - "s/t"
7) M83 - "Saturdays = Youth"
8) Nine Inch Nails - "Ghosts I-IV"
9) British Sea Power - "Do You Like Rock Music?
10) Jonny Greenwood - "There Will Be Blood OST"

Listening to this one for the first time as we speak. Sounds pretty good so far. I think it's officially a self-titled album though. Right now Tallest Man On Earth is my #1. At first the voice annoyed me, but the music is so damn good.

1 – Tallest Man On Earth – Shallow Grave
2 – Sun Kil Moon – April
3 – Tyler Ramsey – A Long Dream About Swimming Across the Sea
4 – Winona – Rosebud
5 – Ladyhawk – Shots
6 – Four Tet – Ringer EP
7 – Jon Foreman – Fall & Winter Eps
8 – Karine Polwart – This Earthly Spell
9 – Plants & Animals – Parc Avenue
10 – Nels Andrews – Off Track Betting
11 – Accidental – There Were Wolves
12 – Throw Me the Statue – Moonbeams
13 – Klimt – Jesienne Odcienie Melancholii
14 – Retribution Gospel Choir – Retribution Gospel Choir
15 – Downliners Sekt – The Saltire Wave
16 – Vampire Weekend – Vampire Weekend

Those first 6 are pretty far ahead of the rest. How awesome is that Four Tet EP? Good god, I can't believe the electronic gurus here haven't been raving over it.
