I found the new Black Mountain very plain.

I still wanna hear Hot Chip, Destroyer, Mountain Goats and Los Campesinos!.

That is a surprising opinion. I'm jealous, though, ultimately, since I wish I could stand Vermont's voice. Unfortunately, I am unable.

I actually found myself paying more attention to the arrangements until I got used to her voice-- much like I had to do with Joanna Newsom (although their voices are opposites). I didn't automatically enjoy her voice, but now I like it a lot.. it has a different quality to it that took me a while to grab onto.

even if you could stand her voice (which i can't) i don't think that would save the album. all in all i would have to say this is a disappointing release.

Agree to disagree.

P.S. I'd be interested to see how many agree with my comparison to Hissing of Summer Lawns, how many like Hissing of Summer Lawns, and how many like The Portrait Is Finished....

So far it looks like this, not many albums though:

1. The Mountain Goats - "Heretic Pride"
2. Samamidon - "All is Well"
3. Tyler Ramsey - "A Long Dream"
4. The Magnetic Fields - "Distortion"
5. Cat Power - "Jukebox"

Waiting to hear Destroyer and Vampire Weekend.

i listened to the new cadence weapon yesterday and i was pretty let down. his first release was pretty impressive, especially considering how young he was when he wrote the album. the new release lacks the inventiveness of his previous work, relying to a fault on tedious house beats. most troubling may be the decline in the lyrical content, as well as a less impressive flow altogether. i will give it a few more listens to see if i can get something more from this release, but as of right now i most certainly not a fan of the new album.

I disagree with Cadence. His flow is more Busdriver on this album, and I'm a fan of a lot of the beats. Yes, its a little less out there, and some of the house jams at the end can get a bit tedious, but overall, I maintain that its a really strong release, and might surpass his debut. I still haven't had time to dig into his lyrics, but they seem to have drifted away from narratives, which is a shame. Still, I love it.

also, i listened to the new xiu xiu recently as well. i really like the new direction of this band (i.e. ditching the nintendo electronica). track 2 is especially superb - almost frog eyes type spastic vocals, with incredible, original arrangements. maybe the best yet this year up with atlas sound.

I fail to see how you could possibly think that a good thing. Smiler

Yeah, I ended up forgetting almost all the early releases from 07, with the exception of Of Montreal.

Agreed. Though it will be hard to forget great releases like "Heretic Pride" and "All is Well".

I can't help but feel that the timing of the Vampire Weekend release is off. I mean wouldn't this be THE summer album of 2008 if it was released in May or June? But anyways its a very good album, maybe it isn't profound, but it sure is fun.

I agree. It reminds me of the unfortunate release of Wincing the Night Away last January.

Well, so far for me:

1. Drive-By Truckers Brighter Than Creation's Dark
2. British Sea Power Do You Like Rock Music
3. Vampire Weekend Vampire Weekend
4. Super Furry Animals Hey Venus!
5. Marah Angels of Destruction
6. Evangelicals The Evening Descends
7. Black Mountain In the Future

If you haven't heard it, Brighter Than Creation's Dark is heads and shoulders above the rest. It's very good Southern rock with touches of twangy steel guitar on a few songs. The lyrics are clever, occasionally hysterical. And, the rockers really rock. In fact, I even changed my signature to one of my favorite lines from the CD. I really recommend this one.

Edit: I forgot Super Furry Animals earlier. I know that many picked it up in 2007 as the result of pre-release, but it's official release was in 2008.
