I don’t know if this topic will be as popular as last year, but I’ll give it a shot anyway .
Here is where you can start your year-end list and keep track of it until the Final Best Albums of 2008 topic gets posted. Update as much as you want, flaunt your favourites and give mini reviews.
My list as of right now:
1. Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel, Atlas Sound 2. Women As Lovers, Xiu Xiu 3. Vampire Weekend, Vampire Weekend 4. Distortions, The Magnetic Fields

*shocked to my core*
Sorry to shock, but the releases from 1965, 1967, 1968, 1971, 1972, 1976, 1980, 1984, 1995 and 1999-2007 (and other years forgotten from songs on v/a collections) came first.

Since I didn't hear Bon Iver until after I posted by top 20 of 2007, I'm counting it as a 2008 release.
01. Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago 02. Mountain Goats - Heretic Pride 03. Beach House - Devotion 04. Atlas Sound - Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel 05. Tyler Ramsey - A Long Dream About Swimming Across The Sea 06. Magnetic Fields - Distortion
Need more time:
Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend British Sea Power - Do You Like Rock Music? Cat Power - Jukebox Hello, Blue Roses - The Portrait Is Finished And I Have Failed To Capture Your Beauty...
4 Albums that I've listened to and enjoyed: Magnetic Fields- Distortion Xiu Xiu- Women as Lovers Charlottefield- What Are Friends For British Sea Power- Do You Like Rock Music?

Ooh, I did want to count Bon Iver as 2008. So my list should go something like
Bon Iver Mountain Goats
and maybe Tyler Ramsey.
VVVV - Agreed. Couldn't get excited about that album at all. I've heard Los Campesinos, Magnetic Fields, Hello Blue Roses, and British Sea Power, and none of them are really great at all. A disappointing start to a slow-looking year.

Yeah, I definitely understand where you're coming from. Pretty soon I won't have enough time to listen to all the new stuff. But most of the stuff on my list now I picked up in November or December, so I've had a while to listen.

The year is so young!
But there's already been some very worthwhile stuff produced... nothing nearly on par with Bon Iver, but still solid.
Unfortunately, since I refuse to download anything until it's officially released, I haven't heard the new Destroyer or Mountain Goats yet. And, I haven't heard Bon Iver yet, because the self-release was impossible to find and the major release hasn't come out yet.
But, I appreciate all you guys pre-screening all the leaks for me so I know what to get when if officially comes out.

Man, you are denying yourself the opportunity to hear a truly great album from Bon Iver. It's been officially released... why not just pick it up off Mediafire and then buy it when Jagjaguwar releases it in a few months?
I have listened to 12 albums from 2008 thus far. They all will need more listens before I have a definitive opinion on them, but this is my list so far:
1) Atlas Sound - Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel 2) Destroyer - Trouble in Dream 3)Stephen Malkmus - Real Emotional Trash 4) The Moutain Goats - Heretic Pride 5) Beach House - Devotion 6) British Sea Power - Do You Like Rock Music? 7) Blood on the Wall - Liferz 8) Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend 9) Hello, Blue Roses - The Portrait is Finished and I Have Failed to Capture Your Beauty 10) The Helio Sequence - Keep Your Eyes Ahead 11) The Magnetic Fields - Distortion 12) The Mars Volta - Bedlam in Goliath
the first 5 on this list seem to have some staying power beyond just the first listen, especially atlas sound. The last 4 on this list I really could care less about. Hello, Blue Roses debut was pretty boring, unoriginal, and the female lead vocals at times grating. The Helio Sequence are just plain and bland, I never have been a big Magnetic Fields fan, and they continue to utilize those cheesy vocals that completely turn me off to them. Bedlam in Goliath, is by far the worst Mars Volta release ever. This band gets worse with every album, they should really break up, plus, I am eager to hear Cedric's solo stuff (from what little has been put out there, on comp's and stuff, it sounds promising).

Yeah, I know. I can't wait to hear it.
But, I also know me. Like many people on these boards, I believe an artist should be paid for their works, so I wont illegally download. If I download something thinking that I will buy a copy when it officially comes out, I know I wont do it. Why pay for something when you already have it? I'm a weak person.
So, to resist that temptation, I wont download it until I pay for it.
