Something to keep in mind is that the nominations are "for recordings released during the Eligibility Year October 1, 2007 through September 30, 2008". With that knowledge, a nomination for M.I.A.'s February 11, 2008 single "Paper Planes" from August 8, 2007's Kala isn't so lame after all.
I think those nominations are loads better than they have been over the past few years. I mean, four of the album of the year noms are actually good! Thats gotta be a first.

Then people in the US have been buying better music. For me, those nominations looks like that what have been sold most. I mean Tha Carter III has sold 2.8 million copies and Lil Wayne has 8 nominations. Viva la Vida 1,9 million copies sold in the US and 7 nominations for Coldplay.
Maybe not the same logic in every category, though. But yes, ok nominations I think. M.I.A. should win.
I can't believe there was no love shown for Taylor Swift. The girl has had one of the most incredible years in pop music history. She holds the number one record for most Top 20 debuts in a year and is tied in second place for the most Top 20 debuts in a career. A career, and she's just been around for a couple years. She's only eighteen and writes material that's at least on par with the best pop tunes around.
Can we talk for a second about how the Dance categories were actually half decent?
Best Dance Recording
Harder Better Faster Stronger Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter & Guy Manuel de Homem-Christo, producers; Thomas Bangalter & Guy Manuel de Homem-Christo, mixers Track from: Alive 2007 [Virgin Records]
Ready For The Floor Hot Chip Hot Chip, producers; Dan Carey, mixer Track from: Made In The Dark [Astralwerks/DFA]
Just Dance Lady Gaga & Colby O'Donis RedOne, producer; Robert Orton, mixer [Streamline/Interscope/Kon Live]
Give It 2 Me Madonna Madonna & The Neptunes, producers; Andrew Coleman & Spike Stent, mixers Track from: Hard Candy [Warner Bros.]
Disturbia Rihanna Brian Kennedy, producer; Phil Tan, mixer Track from: Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded [Def Jam]
Black & Gold Sam Sparro Jesse Rogg & Sam Sparro, producers; Jeremy Wheatley, mixer Track from: Sam Sparro [Universal Republic Records]
Best Electronic/Dance Album (For vocal or instrumental albums. Albums only.)
New York City Brazilian Girls [Verve Forecast]
Alive 2007 Daft Punk [Virgin Records]
Bring Ya To The Brink Cyndi Lauper [Epic]
X Kylie Minogue [Capitol/Astralwerks]
Last Night Moby [Mute]
Robyn Robyn [Konichiwa/Cherrytree/Interscope]
Robyn? Cyndi Lauper? Rihanna? Madonna? Kylie? Daft Punk? Hot Chip? Lady Gaga? I always find the Dance categories generally better than everything else (mainly because... well... no one cares so they tend to take more risks) but those are some damn strong categories.

I just can't respect that choice.
I totally agree they dropped the ball last year and three years ago by selecting the Chemical Brothers (c'mon, they aren't that good!), but they gave it to Confessions on a Dance Floor and Kisk Kash, so their track record is alright.

No joke.

Meh. Grammys. I'm more excited to see the P4K 100.
But actually the nominations are surprisingly OK this year. They have a tendency to pick the lamest nominees as the winners though, so Year of the Gentleman is the front-runner for album of the year.

I think I'd put my money on Raising Sand for Album of the Year... they don't pick the lamest nominee as the winner so much as the stodgy rockist choice.

That wouldn't be fair, that would be criminal. If Radiohead wins anything but Alternative Album it's truly undeserved. Why is "House of Cards" everywhere? It's the weakest track on the album and among the weakest from any Radiohead album.
Radiohead: You may have fooled everyone else but you haven't fooled this fool. I know and you know Rainbows is half-arsed and your most boring effort since Pablo Honey. That's why it's release was constantly delayed and then it was quickly given away for free. That's why you threw in that bonus disc and all the fun little packaging as compensation. I love Radiohead but it seems like everytime they sneeze people applaud. They're one of the greatest acts of all time and in my personal top five, but they're not faultless and In Rainbows is a humdrum affair.
Let the stoning begin!

This list still fails even though it is among the best in recent years. Even knowing that Radiohead won't win half of those awards they deserve, at least they are being recognized.
And I'm still sore over MIA's loss last year for Kala against the Chemical Brothers. I mean, really?

Yep. Terrible injustice. Kala's one of the most genre-bending, bona fide efforts of all time while still managing to be highly listenable, irresistibly catchy, and a booty-shaker!
As someone else mentioned, how did house of cards get every radiohead song nomination, if it is rock shouldn't it be bodysnatchers or at least jigsaw or 15 step. Why can't nude get best male vocal performance?
The grammy nominations has me slightly interested after reading pitchforkmedia's little titilation titled grammy nomination slightly relevant. Then I read the actual list of nominees and I was only slightly offended compared to previous years.
Ok fair enough they sort it into mainstream and alternative but...
Best Alternative Music Album Modern Guilt - Beck, Narrow Stairs - Death Cab For Cutie, The Odd Couple - Gnarls Barkley, Evil Urges - My Morning Jacket, In Rainbows - Radiohead
This is alternative??? Where is the catagory for bands like deerhunter, xiu xiu, panda bear, animal collective and the knife?
I think if the oscars operated in the same fashion, they would probably nominate: Australia, nights in rodanthe, highschool musical three and hancock for best picture. Based on what "the industry" praises in these awards shows I am being taught that essentially:
-good movies are ones that are carefully crafted, minimalist, ambitious and not always family friendly dramas that need to be savoured.
-good music is easily digestible, disposable, simplistic recreations of past successes.

Guys, it's the Grammy Awards. Every real music lover knows this award show is a total joke and it is a night for record execs to slap one another on the back at how much money they made.
They base their nominations soley on record sales and not on talent. The Jonas Brothers as Best New Artist? LOL, give me a friggin break. Tokyo Police Club for example are far more credible as artists as those high pitched frauds.
