I'm sure there was too, but Mr. Merritt seems to be putting it off and putting it off. However, the other day I got an e-mail from The House of Tomorrow (their web site / mailing list) saying: "The Magnetic Fields are happy to announce that their new album, titled "Distortion," will be released on Nonesuch Records on January 15, 2008. The band will perform a small number of U.S. tour dates in February and March. Specific details regarding venues and ticket pre-sales will be announced shortly."

This has probably been on the "anticipated albums" list since 2005 or so. I would also be looking forward to a new Wrens album, but I don't have a good feeling...
Hey, we were saying this about the new Radiohead and Postal Service albums, weren't we? I mean, look at it now...
One out of two ain't bad.

I think/hope it's Postal Service. Think Ben Gibbard can repeat what happened on the first one. One of my favs of the decade....
Well, I'm hoping for a Postal Service, because the last DCFC blew goats. I'm not even that optimistic about a new Postal Service record though. I think Gibbard has really gone downhill as a songwriter. Transatlanticism had a few good ones, but it was weaker than all the previous DCFC albums. Dude's lost it...and of course is therefore becoming massively popular. Just goes to prove that popularity has almost no correlation to quality. Same thing happened to the Shins.
Worse record + More publicity = Massive popularity

Except that Wincing the Night Away was their best album...
I will agree that Plans wasn't as good as some of their older stuff, but I'm still willing to see what DC are doing for the new one. Since they've actually said they're in the studio for it, I'd expect the DCFC album before the Postal Service album.

Talked to one of the band members of Destroyer yesterday at a local indie record he works at, in Vancouver here, they've just finished up the new Destroyer record and he describes it as hard-hitting, I said, "what does that mean?" He says, the drums are more up front, I guess it's going to be a louder record, not sure.

Yep. It's called "Skeletal Lamping" and it's apparently 100 pieces of songs all put together. Those are the rumors I've heard so far.
Wow, I thought you were kidding, but I checked out Wikipedia and you're right. After all, Presidential front runner Stephen Colbert trusts it with his life, so I do too.
If this is actually true it is easily my most anticipated album ever.
I'm sure there was some anticipation about the newest Magnetic Fields album in the Anticipated 2007 Release thread, although I don't recall anybody needing to go to the bathroom.
