Hey, if you guys can't wait for Portishead's new album, I should give you a heads up on her solo album "Out of Season". (I just found out it existed) Got great ratings but I find it reallly mellow, but there are some excellent songs that could ease the wait.

Craig Finn says new Hold Steady in 2nd quarter 08, then hates himself for talking about quarters.

Yeah, I remember hearing about this, but had totally forgotten. Will check it out. Ms. Gibbons was one of those junior high obsessions of mine.

The new Of Montreal album sounds more and more interesting the more I hear about it. Apparently Barnes is telling the story of Georgie Fruit, a trangendered black man - and is, of course, assuming that persona.

2007 has been a great year for music, but my top 10-20 is made up of returning heavy hitters that have been around for a while. For four years or five years prior my top five was always completely unknown bands that came from out of nowhere to blow me away. I miss that. Maybe some of the magic is gone now that I know more about what is going. But I'm looking forward to the next Apologies to the queen mary , Funeral, or Ys. Something completely new and different that will blow me away.
Also, have we not yet mentioned Sufjan. I have a feeling he'll be back in October sometime with something very solid.

Mountain Goats, Babeeeeeeee! I wasn't thrilled with Get Lonely, but it was a minor misstep in an otherwise consistently great run of albums from Darnielle.

Sigur Ros has all but officially confirmed an '08 release date for a new record. I suspect we'll be hearing something official in the next few months.
Also, wtf Autolux, where's your sophomore record?
I'm not holding my breath for a My Bloody Valentine or Portishead release this year. And besides, nothing guarantees either of those will be good (EDIT: if they're released at all). Do either of those folks still have it? Portishead, maybe, but I'm not getting my hopes up for MBV. I'm not trying to be negative, I swear.
The Drive-By Truckers are going to have their first Jason Isbell-less release, which should be something to listen to, I suppose, though I don't know what the band's going to sound like without him.
Lil' Wayne's The Carter III finally has an official release date in February, but that'll likely be pushed back.

I'm very excited for the new Magnetic Fields, especially since we'll be seeing them in March. They're very close to the top of my List of bands I've always wanted to see so I hope the new album is amazing.
I just looked through the list of possible 2008 releases and see Morrissey on for late in the year. I've been a die-hard fan back to the Smiths and was pleasantly surprised by his last album so I have high hopes for a new one.
Just purused the upcoming release calendar for next four months and beyond...hate to say it, but based on name/reputations/past body of work...it looks like a really lame start to 2008. Could be worse than front half of 2006, which was weak, weak, weak...though there the problem wasn't a lack of cool artists releasing, it was surplus of disappointing releases.
Hopefully some newcomers in early 2008 will surprise, otherwise I may be spending a whole lot less on music next year.
I hate to say that I agree with you, Illiniq. Outside of the new Mountain Goats and MMJ, 2008 looks rather boring.
