There's no 2009 anticipated releases thread yet, so I guess I'll put it here:

Animal Collective - "Merriweather Post Pavilion"
Due out: January 2009

Wow, I can't wait.

I've been on an Animal Collective binge. If this is true, this should set 2009 off to a spectacular start.

I think this is going to be a pretty good January, especially considering the fact that January typically isn't a big month for music releases.

2009 is looking like a GREAT year.

It seems like most bands/artists can come out with an album every two years these days... if that's the case, some of my favourites, The National, Iron & Wine, Bedouin Soundclash, The Avett Brothers, (and it goes on) should be almost done touring meaning recording time... but I'm just guessing/hoping.

So far I only know about Grizzly Bear, U2 and now Animal Collective for 2009 releases I care about, but I'm sure there's more.

I'm thinking about Andew Bird in January. And I'm no expert, but I would bet money on Sufjan come next summer.

Please do not get my hopes up. I read some member here posted in the Sufjan thread saying the same thing about him finally coming out with another album this year, but that sure doesn't look like that's happening...

Yeah, I probably would have lost money on the same bet last year. I had been hoping for three years now to see Sufjan in concert the summer after I graduated (this year). We were going to fly out of state just to do it too. And then we waited and waited and waited. Ended up seeing Andrew Bird and Josh Ritter both twice, which is pretty much the next best thing.

But seriously, I think he could release a new album this year if he really wanted. I have strong suspicions he has more than an album's worth of music recorded already that he is just sitting on. He could release nothing but studio versions of "Majesty Snowbird" and "Barn Owl, Night Killer" and it would be longer than most modern albums and would easily be one of the best of the year to boot.

Ohwell. Maybe he'll just go the way of Jeff Mangum, or Brian Wilson. Perhaps Sufjan Stevens' Smile! The other 48 states! will come out in 25 years or so.

True, about the amount of material he's got laying around... hours and hours of stuff, knowing him.
"Majesty Snowbird" may be Sufjan's best song, I've been dying to see it on a record.
Oh well, December is fast approaching, so it's time to whip out Songs for Christmas.
That'll do just fine, that'll do. (For now.)

My wife has forbidden me to listen to Songs For Chistmas until mid November.

I heard he made a new christmas disc last year, but it was only given out to a few close friends. He also made that christmas song that he traded the rights to with the guy last year. But the guy that won it said he wasn't going to share it with anyone. So there is a secrect Sufjan christmas album and an additional song somewhere under a few dozen people's pillows.

Hahahaha, great post.

I hate Sufjan Stevens for not releasing anything during 2007-2008.

Does anyone know if Midlake's new album is coming out this year? I've googled it and can't seem to find out.

I'm going to rock out some Songs for Christmas during a Christmas party that I hope to throw - along with "Christmas with the Rat Pack" that I got from my sister last year. Wink

Well I've already been listening to the 5 CD box-set Songs For Christmas by Sufjan Stevens for a week now. I forgot how amazing it was. For anyone who doesn't have it, I'd HIGHLY recommend it.
It's the greatest compilation of Christmas music I've ever listened to.

Speaking of Christmas music (I know, I'm getting really ahead of the times here, ha) but ex-Neutral Milk Hotel member Julian Koster released a Christmas album called "The Singing Saw at Christmastime" and you can listen to the whole thing (along with a lot of other Merge-records) here: http://www.mergerecords.com/media.php

Man, I love the singing saw, but that album seems to literally be nothing but singing saw. And that is really, really boring.

Agreed, by the third track I thought to myself "Is he going to change this up AT ALL?" It all started to sound the same as well, and actually got pretty annoying.

Unbunny - Sensory Unloaded

I was afraid Unbunny had stopped making music, and I'm really pumped to find that he's got another album coming out. He's gotten better and better with each release, so this should be great. Snow Tires and the Typist EP were both stellar, and the couple albums before that were good too. He makes mostly solo acoustic music and has a voice with an uncanny similarity to Neil Young's. Love love love this guy.

As to 2009 releases, I'm so psyched about this one:

After hitting the road this fall, magnolia electric co. will bunker down [in november 2008] with steve albini in electrical audio to record their next album, tentatively titled ‘a map of the falling stars’. if all goes according to plan, it should see release sometime in 2009.

Did not know this. Thanks for the notice, Jacok. I've been a bit disappointed with Molina since What Comes After the Blues (which was solid but a drop-off from the amazing albums he released immediately prior to it), but he's still one of my all-time favorite artists, and I know he can still write a great tune. I'm hoping he ditches the band or at least the horrid arrangements he used on Nashville Moon. Ruined a lot of phenomenal songs on that one.
