I've been really disappointed trying to sift through this stuff for a whiff of decency. I'll try to be more specific in a follow-up post when I've sufficiently differentiated these crappy albums one from another.
I'll be waiting.

quote: I hate to say it, but I was SO disappointed by the new My Morning Jacket album "Evil Urges". I waited weeks after it was released on CD for my local record store to get in the vinyl copy.
I had heard good things about it (mostly) so I was willing to shell out twice the amount the Cd would have cost. But the album is just BAD. It's so... predictable. It just doesn't seem like they spent much time and effort writing/recording it. Just flat boring.
What a huge step back from the excellent Z.
I actually found Evil Urges to be a huge improvement on Z, though I know I'm in the minority. Even those who like Evil Urges would probably rate Z higher. Z was the first MMJ album I heard about seven months ago - I liked it, didn't think it was anything amazing. Some tracks have grown on me since then, others remain boring. Recently, I've purchased both Evil Urges and It Still Moves and like those infinitely better. Can't say why, just like the feel of those albums more.

I loved Evil Urges and saw it as an advancement of ideas on both Z and It Still Moves.

Make it 4. Although I've already assumed he's talking about The Field, and Stars Of The Lid.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I originally flirted around MMJ because they were from Kentucky and I just kinda liked them. But after seeing them live it became a full blown love affair. That being said Evil Urges has it's moments but not nearly as good as It Still Moves or Z. And now I get to see them again this upcoming Saturday in Louisville! I can't wait!

Okay. For JGlass and Jesus: I didn't really much like Ladytron, Miss Kitten, Trifonic, Crystal Castles, Zombie Zombie, Four Tet, Hot Chip, The Field, or Benga's releases. They just don't have any personality. Sheesh.

I love Trifonic and Ladytron's albums, dig the Four Tet EP and despise Crystal Castles... and I have no idea how you could confuse any of those. They sound worlds apart to me. Nor does your complaint really ring true for me. Since when was 'personality' a requirement for good music?

I didn't mind it, but as JGlass said, it's nothing special. It just kind of sits there..

Man, I'm crazy about that Four Tet EP. It's awesome if you ask me. He's really returned to form with this one. Sounds as good as anything he's ever done if you ask me. I don't even like repetitive music generally, but Ringer really does the trick.

I think if your going to be repetitive in the Electronic genre you need some kind of ace in the hole. You can't just get good at Fruity Loops, bake up some beats, and then, in some cases, sing (or find someone to sing) trite lyrics on top of it, and expect greatness. There's an inherent punch to a decently constructed electronic beat, but you have to be creative with it if you want to be great. Look at what Dan Deacon, Daft Punk, The Knife, The Junior Boys, Dan Friel etc. do with their best material and you can see the difference. If I recall, Four Tet's best album created an awesome sense of location for me. I remember feeling like I was actually standing in an Egyptian tomb with sunbeams streaming down from above at one point while listening to it. Genuine transportation! I didn't get this with this one when I checked it out, but maybe it's a grower.
