I'm so sick of these bullshit claims being made by all these new people, seriously. I'll say it to you also: Get your head out of your ass.
I joined BEFORE you LOL. And no, regrettably there's not a big difference between old and new psychedelia. My parents were hippies, so I've been listening to old school psychedelia for 20+ years now. Go listen to some old psychedelia before you start shooting your mouth off about genres you know absolutely nothing about.
Eh...that comment was made because you only have 92 posts, but that's irrelevant. Really, I'm not sure how much of Strawberry Jam you have listened to. There are certainly bands today that do rip off old psych bands, but Animal Collective is most certainly not one of them. I mean, they definetely have their influences, but they don't ever define them. I do believe I know quite a bit about old psychedelic as well, so you probably shouldn't resort to that.

I agree with everything Grabblegarrr has to say and all I have to add is: Psych hasn't changed? really? What's the last psych band you listened to that sounded exactly like old psych? (and I'm not talkin "indie music", I'm talking about Psych). Most psych these days comes in the form of Stoner Rock and experimental folk-style stuff. P.S. Stop talking out of your ass, I was raised on psych also. You don't know anything about me so stop acting like you do.

animal collective a rip off?!?! haha, i thought i would never hear that. i am curious, if animal collective is unoriginal to you, what band today doesn't rip off or cop someone else's style? btw this is not a rhetorical question.

Well, as a big SJ fan I did as you suggested and just listened to the Beach Boys "Feel Flows". Now honestly, if I had heard this song on the radio out of the blue, there would be no way in hell it would even remotely remind me of anything on SJ. It had saxaphone and flute. No melodies at all similar. Entire parts of songs taken straight from the originals...right. I hope you have a better example.

Actually the first half of the song is pretty good. A bit of a Neu! rip off, but sounds pretty good. When he comes in and starts singing though, I remember that I'm listening to Death Cab and all is ruined.

I have managed to avoid hearing anything truly atrocious this year, but there's still plenty of time.

It's not actually "Worst of the Year" territory, but I was pretty disapointed to realize the other day that I bought Super Furry Animals Hey Venus over a month and a half ago and haven't listened to it since the car ride home from the store. It's not that I thought it was horrible, but obviously there wasn't enough to it to keep me from forgetting about it completely for a very long time. I was pretty excited about it too. They are a major band in my sphere of favorites.

Give it a few more listens man. Anyone who I know who is a fan of them really loves that album. It's one of their most concise and complete albums and their best in a while. I love the band as well and Hey Venus! is a winner for me.

Yeah. I'm going to give it a lot more spins. And I hope and expect it will grow on me. I just can't believe I seriously forgot it existed for a month and a half.

In the interest of following up on our previous conversation, I will say that I listened to the new Death Cab song and it's boring like I thought. Not bad, but boring. Experimenting isn't just acting against type; This song just has a really long boring intro then is all of a sudden a pretty lame Death Cab single.
However, this "experiment" did remind me how awesome it was hearing "Spiders (Kidsmoke)" for the first time was.

So I listened to that Ruby Suns album last night. What the fuck, no one here like this right? Absolutely pedestrian and terrible. I don't even understand stuff anymore.

I've heard it a good five times and I don't really like it either. At first, it seems like a novel and cute idea, with all of the 'world' sounds but it got tedious, quick. I'm still listening though.

I still like it, but not nearly as much as I did originally. Not really the type of album that garners a 'worst of' nomination at all in that it's pretty unique. ---------------------------------- Employee of the month awards are the opiate of the masses. For the potheadsGang Starr

If you think about it, it kinda takes something unique (which this really isn't all that unique)to be the worst; if it's not unique, what's to differentiate it from all of the faceless bad stuff out there.

So if you do concede that it's unique, how can it also be pedestrian?

I haven't really got into the album yet, but the track Tane Mahuta is one of my favourites of 2008.

If you read my post, I say that it's really not all that unique. So, of course, to that you may say how can I call it the worst. In response I can only say that I can't bring myself to get hung up on the details of posting on a message board. There are two threads "The Best Records of 08" and "The Worst Records of 08" you hear an album you really don't like, which thread do you pick to post about it in?

I agree. If a more specific thread was started though it would most likely be locked down with a link directing you to here.
