You know, as much as I despise most mainstream stuff, I enjoy Jack Johnson. I haven't heard his latest one, but I enjoyed Brushfire Fairytales, On and On, and In Between Dreams. He seems like an all-around decent guy as well, at least from what I've heard.

You're right. Just, I foresee me forcing myself to listen to it again is going to be a problem.

While it's obviously a bit premature to say the new Tapes N Tapes album is worst of the year, it sure sounds disappointing.

I'd suspect the new Death Cab will pan out much the same way.

More bands should just break up sometimes.

you should do your research before posting.

anyone who has seen death cab live knows they have a jamy quality to them (gibbard even plays an extra drum set when they jam at times). albums like plans do not do there musical talents justice. i was not a plans fan, in fact i can't remember liking death cab since 5 or 6 years ago in high school. despite this, i am excited for the new release.

chris walla on the new album in october of 2007: we're six songs in." He went on to say "thus far it's pretty weird and pretty spectacular; lots of blood. It's creepy and heavy... we've got a ten minute long Can jam, "

they have also commented on how they will make an album they are happy with, not something designed to sell well. gibbard: "I just don't feel like we really have anything to prove of it other than to ourselves and to making a record we really enjoy."

they have also gone on to say that this album may represent a curve-ball to fans, as there will be more slow songs, more abrasive and harsh sounding songs, and in general more experimentation.

how does this not sound like an awesome turn of events for death cab?

Cat Power - Jukebox

I love Cat Power, but Jukebox is just plain bad. Dr. Awesome is 100% correct about Jukebox, it just fails to capture what Chan is good at, and what made The Greatest and You Are Free as special as they are.

The year is still pretty young though, I'm sure theres plenty more crap to be released.

I absolutely hated Plans and a lot of their other material is hit or miss with me (some songs I adore some make me wanna commit hara-kiri), but a 10 minute Can-style jam sounds like this album will be a curveball... I'm kinda excited to see how it pans.

The one song I heard from Plans (the single) made me wanna puke, but I enjoy their earlier stuff. I really don't expect anything good from them ever again though. They've been headed downhill for their last 3 albums, and now that they've polished their sound and signed to a major I anticipate nothing but mashed shitcake from their corner.

If you can't see how one would be skeptical about a Death Cab album that includes "a ten minute long Can jam", then I really don't know what to tell you.

A lot of bands try to experiment and change it up significantly ten years into their career, and really, it almost never works well. Also, it pays to not buy into the press of an album before it comes out, especially if it portends a major evolution for the respective artist. I mean, does anyone remember all of the advance media surrounding St. Anger?

Death Cab are at their best when they are writting songs with tight flowing melodies, with diverse, intrigueing and honest story telling.

I have a hard time imagineing them pulling this off in a ten minute epic "jam", but the Decemberists do it all the time.

Also, "Transatlanticism" was a long track, and one of my favorites.

I admit I haven't liked Death Cab's recent releases as much as their old stuff, but I'm willing to give them the benifit of the doubt until I actually hear what they have to offer.

....the Decemberists have yet to pull off anything other than pairing one of the most annoying voices with some of the most annoying instruments. Granada Theater played a Decemberists show inbetween sets at the Holy Fuck/Fiery Furnaces show (most likely because Colin Meloy is comin to town) and myself and my friends couldn't take how obnoxious it was. From his pinstripe suit to his voice, the constant accordion to the lyrics about pirates...

obviously, changing the band's formula that drastically gives the new album a decent chance at failing, but wouldn't you rather see a band try then replicate the same crap over and over again. i don't know about you guys but i would much rather see death cab venture into prog and fail then to see another "plans".

also, i really like that you bring up the decemberists - i don't know how many people saw them venturing into prog, but i think it worked wonderfully. "the island" is a terrific song, for example. also, even though many people hate when stephen malkmus jams on his albums, i think this development has been largely a success (i love his release this year).

death cab has more of this leaning than you would expect. there taste in music and their live show makes this abundantly clear. who is to say that this absolutely won't work? it sure as hell isn't a certainty - but others have gone this route and pulled it off.

lastly, lets leave metallica out of the equation here. how many people take them seriously after the black album (and even then i can't remember the last time i even listened to those albums - high school?).

Vampire Weekend is (hopefully) this year's version of what Strawberry Jam was to me last year. I don't see how it can get more dull and uninspired than VW. It annoys me to no end when people heap praise on an album that's nothing more than a throwback to '60s.

I realized how much people like SJ around here, so I didn't bother posting how awful I thought it was. Listen to the Silver Apples, Soft Machine, Vanilla Fudge, The Zombies, and the Beach Boys "Feel Flows" and you'll realize what a blatant rip-off SJ is...entire parts of songs taken straight from the originals.

riiiight.

I'm pretty sure most of us on this board are fans of the bands you mentioned, but there is no way you can call anything Animal Collective have done a rip-off. Have you even listened to the album? There's a huge difference between the psych of today and yesteryear, buddy.

I'm so sick of these bullshit claims being made by all these new people, seriously. I'll say it to you also:
Get your head out of your ass.

IYHO. Some of us, however, quite like Meloy's voice, the instruments, and the songwriting. FWIW, I have the same opinion about Fiery Furnaces that you do of The Decemberists, but don't hold it against me.

I joined BEFORE you LOL. And no, regrettably there's not a big difference between old and new psychedelia. My parents were hippies, so I've been listening to old school psychedelia for 20+ years now. Go listen to some old psychedelia before you start shooting your mouth off about genres you know absolutely nothing about.
