Nothing wrong with Traffic, my man. I wish I heard more of them on the local college station I listen to.

Tribute albums tend to be disappointing -- either simply rehashing an artist's work as faithfully as possible or making deliberately quirky departures that make no musical sense. Mostly, they leave you scurrying back to the originals. But there are some great tribute albums that genuinely reinvent and reinvigorate an artist's music.

Herewith the five best (i.e. my favourite) tribute albums:

"I'm Your Fan: The Songs of Leonard Cohen"

Top tracks:
"So Long Marianne" -- James
"I Can't Forget" -- Pixies
"Who By Fire" -- House of Love

"Tulare Dust: A Songwriter's Tribute to Merle Haggard"

Top tracks:
"Tulare Dust/They're Tearin' the Labour Camps Down" -- Tom Russell
"Irma Jackson" -- Barrence Whitfield
"Kern River" -- Dave Alvin

"Songs of Jimmie Rodgers -- A Tribute"

Top tracks:
"Somewhere Down Below the Mason Dixon Line" -- Dickey Betts
"In the Jailhouse Now" -- Steve Earle
"T is for Texas" -- Dwight Yoakum

"Red, Hot + Blue: A Tribute to Cole Porter"

Top tracks:
"Too Darn Hot" -- Erasure
"Begin the Beguine" -- Salif Keita
"I've Got You Under My Skin" -- Nenah Cherry

"Avalon Blues: A Tribute to the Music of Mississippi John Hurt"

Top tracks:
"Angels Laid Him Away" -- Lucinda Williams
"Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor" -- Mark Selby
"Chicken" -- Geof Muldaur

5 Honourable Mentions:

"Hank Williams Timeless"
"Time and Love: The Music of Laura Nyro"
"This is Where I Belong: The Songs of Ray Davies and The Kinks"
"Total Lee: The Songs of Lee Hazlewood"
"Where Have All the Flowers Gone: Songs of Pete Seeger Vol. 1"

Top 5 Reasons to put the headphones on at work:

1. You hate hearing your boss talk about his son's new 60GB iPod, which is at least twice a day, that reminds you of how sad your 15GB iPod is in comparison.

2. So you can pretend to ignore everybody that comes into your area looking for something. When they ask you for something you can glance at them with that "I can't hear you!" look while you bob your head to the beat and shrug your shoulders.

3. When your co-worker in the cube next to you constantly jams to Kool and The Gang, which is a band you rather hear on occassion, like strictly at weddings and certainly not everyday.

4. When you are so bored at work that surfing the Internet just isn't doing it anymore.

5. When a good song shuffles on through iTunes and
it warrants a listen at 100% volume...

...those current TOP 5 songs are:

1. Modern World - Wolf Parade
2. Zoom! - Super Furry Animals
3. Off The Record - My Morning Jacket
4. The Fallen - Franz Ferdinand
5. My Doorbell - The White Stripes
