She told me that if I knew so much I should make her a CD. So I made a mix for her, but she said it wasn't that great. How could it not be great? It was 89 tracks spead over 364 minutes grouped into 6 genres (indie, alt, pop, punk, electronic and americana) with some random odds and sods thrown in that fit with the general feel.

I think I went a bit over the top...

Never Mind the Bollocks might garner honorable mention. Apparently "Bollocks" was a vulgar term in '77?

Some nice picks there Bhob, i wouldn't have thought of them if I'd written that one. I would probably have gone for some more obvious picks. What springs to mind are:

Beatles - "Yesterday and Today", people weren't too fond of the butchered babies.
Lennon/Ono - "Two Virgins", that had to be sold in brown bags over here for reasons of 'decency'

Sure was, MJ. After the Pistols won their case, Johnny Rotten said that If they couldn't have used "Bollocks", they were going to use "Stones".

The other obvious one is Randy Pie's debut (I think).

Top 5 songs with the lyric “splinter” or “splinters”

1) “Loser” – Beck – Mellow Gold

“and my time is a piece of wax, fallin' on a termite… who's chokin' on the splinters”

It’s inexplicable really, in a song filled with so many wonderfully memorable random free-style lines, how the above part has become one of my favorite “lyrics” from any song. I don’t know what it means but I have this mystical conviction that the line has a hidden and indecipherable genius to it. Trying to imagine time, not just any time but Beck’s time, as a piece of wax is difficult enough, but interpreting the nonexistent metaphorical significance of it falling on a termite that apparently is working itself to death is just a total mind fuck. It also helps that this is my favorite Beck song. Apparently the song samples a cover of the Dr. John song "I Walk on Gilded Splinters”. Soy una astilla…

2) “Title Track” – Death Cab for Cutie – We Have the Facts and We’re Voting Yes

“Talking how the group had begun to splinter/ And I could taste your lipstick on the filter”

Gibbard and Co. are the masters of pop poetry – the fitting elegance of the lyrics and Gibbard’s bittersweet vocal delivery shine through as centerpiece on almost all their songs. Unlike the above song, this track’s lyrics introduce the listener to the unfolding narrative of the results of a drama filled one-night stand/wedding crash hullabaloo. This time the “splinter” falls right before maybe my second favorite lyrical line, as the hushed dissonance of the songs spuriously shifts up in tempo and production volume. Again, it is one of my favorite Death Cab songs and I get chills every time I listen to it. This is starting to turn into a pattern.

3) “Harborcoat” – R.E.M. – Reckoning

“They crowded up to Lenin with their noses worn off/ A handshake is worthy if it's all that you've got/ Metal shivs on wood push through our back/ There's a splinter in your eye and it reads react”

For whatever reason, listening to this song re-energizes me and makes me want to pump my fist in the air with a rock n’ roll “fuck yeah” cry, as if cheering on Peter Buck while he stammers erratically around the stage. I’m not really sure how a splinter can read or what that has to do with communism, but I love this song.

4) "Heroes in a Half Shell" – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

“Teenage mutant ninja turtles/
Splinter taught them to be ninja teens”

Seriously, you had to see this coming.

5) “Fight This Generation” – Pavement – Wowee Zowee

“look for the splinters/ you might see where they come in”

Though this isn’t exactly one of my top Pavement songs, it is a showcase of the slow rock “experimentalism” that defined this album. It starts out sounding eerily similar to “We Dance”. The resounding string part (cello?) makes it memorable, and perhaps brought me back this track enough for me to remember the “splinters” part comes in.

Alright, that’s all I can think of for songs with the word splinter(s) in the lyrics for now. I’m sure I’ve missed out on some classics but who cares. I can't believe I just spent like 2 hours writing about music that revolves around the word splinter...

Pixies! That was an Amazing list.

Very awesome. "Fight this Generation" is actually one of favorite Pavement songs. I discovered them in my early college days, and it became something of a theme song for a while.

Have you heard the song "Splintering" by Arizona. It's a very good track. You should check it out.

Ha yes, thank you. I too discovered Pavement in college (maybe I should make a top 5 bands discovered in college list), but that was a little later than your college experience. The important thing is that we now know which song has uses the word "splinters". Believe it or not I came up with idea for that list in the, ahem, bathroom at work on Friday. Weird day. I'm just glad I could revive this thread, and I'll check out that song Smiler
