Okay. Everyone love's making mixed Cd's, right??? Let the people post their mixes and we can all rejoice!! I didn't know whether to post this in Alternative, Electronic or Indie, but, I figure most mixed tapes have a variety of styles so let's have some fun.... (if this thread gets going, maybe we can get MediaCritic to post a 'best mixed Cd' on a monthly basis on the Music main page ala' what CMJ used to post in their magazine......)
I'll post a couple of mixes I did last year(my first ones on the computer) and then add the one I'm working on now. If their is a theme to your mix, please note so...

"the sun gets passed from sea to sea, silently, and back to me"
Here's another....The main objective here was to blend some of my fav artists' live tracks together with the fade in option, so that the audience cheers would blend together and it would sound as if all the bands were on the same stage. It worked for the most part...
Title: Best Of Live Tracks
1.DJ Spooky/Intro: Journey Into Sound 2.Fatboy Slim/Born Slippy/Right Here Right Now(live...of course, as is all tracks from here on) 3.INXS/Guns in the Sky 4.the Police/Next To You 5.The Pixies/Monkey Gone To Heaven 6.Radiohead/Morning Bell 7.Bjork/Venus As a Boy 8.Nirvana/Lake of Fire 9.Neil Young/ride My Llama 10.Pearl Jam/Nothingman 11.Indigo Girls/Galileo 12.Van Morrison/Gloria 13.The Police/Driven To Tears 14.Tori Amos/Mr. Zebra 15.The Tragically Hip/Scared 16.Indigo Girls/Strange Fire 17.Eric Clapton/Layla 18.The Pixies/Wave Of Mutilation 19.Pearl Jam/Lukin 20.Pearl Jam/Nothing As It Seems 21.Janis Joplin/Flower In THe Sun
After repeated listenings, the best flow comes at tracks #2,3,4 and #8,9,10,11. Tracks I should of left off, after the fact..#13,14...but that's how it goes...
"the sun gets passed from sea to sea, silently, and back to me"
Now I have a challenge... I have to make a mixed CD of the 'worst' tunes I can come up with that this person will 'hate'. And vice versa. We have to come up with the best turn'off, bizarre set we can think of. When I'm finished(by this weekend) I'll post, and then post hers when I get it next week. In the meantime post away......
"the sun gets passed from sea to sea, silently, and back to me"
I have to say, that the "2nd Burnt Mix" is Sweeeeeeeeeet!!!
Gotta love anyone that mixes up:
Boards of Canada / Amon Tobin / Modest Mouse / Tool / Stereolab / Broken Social Scene / Manitoba....
the Second mix also seems equally superb, (albeit in a more adult rock/contemporary rock way)....and massive props for including "Dj Spooky"
I was thinking of doing a mix/compilation cd....
But my tastes are so varied, that it'd lurch from: Rock, Hip-Hop, World music, Hip-Hop, funk, Jazz, Funk, Soul...etc, on one Cd, and probably make for a really, really fragmented listen....(sighs)
Fear not, varied tastes don't necessarily make for a fragmented listen. When I dj, I regularly flow between all those genres. All music takes an influence from other forms of music, and harmonies and rhythms can flow from song to song through any genre. I'll post a mix of mine later to illustrate that this is possible and enjoyable! Just keep practicing making mixes and eventually you'll find a perfect musical flow that is right for you, or whoever you make it for!

I am not a fan of the all over the place style of mixtape.Maybe if u are just making some stuff for a freind or for yourself.
But i hate it when i am out and about and at a club or somewhere and a dj is playing. There are only a few instances where it can be pulled off.To me it sounds amatuerish and very off point. But thats just me.I prefer a tight cohesive mix where everything flows and washes over you well.
I also love many different styles of music and also dj myself. But it rarely spills ove ronto my sets.Maybe i am locked down too hard on my sets.Or it is more likely that i am no tinto the whole party traveling dj thing...tell me what u want me to play thing.I usually go into a gig with experience of who/what usually attends and what they might expect. So you can throw in something different but not too crazy.Certainly nothing rockish.
Thats neither here nor there...i will post a mix if i get around too it.
I dj in a club on a night that we have live bands. Usually we have rock, punk and metal bands, which makes throwing in an eclectic mix easy and sometimes necessary for me. We occasionally do live hip-hop shows as well. I am forbidden from playing Top 40 dance music, and techno/electronic music is typically frowned upon. If I did nothing but play Social Distortion, Misfits etc all night, the bands and staff would be stoked. However, the amount of women in the club usually means I have to mix it up, as I do take requests and making those flow within the regular tunes is the only real "skill" aspect to my job. I have a profile under dj spidey on myspace.com that lists a lot of the music I typically play, as well as some of the bands that have played the club are on my friend list. Personally, I can't stand club nights with techno/hip-hop dj's, they are what has killed the live music scene, at least in Vancouver.

I couldnt AGREEE MORE.There are some extremely lame djs here that get so much attention just because they play the new garbage...anyways...i am not jealous.
Seattle sadly is on a downturn.Wherever u go u see top 40 crap everywhere.I totally stay away from that myself i will not even purchase it.But i have been asked frequently if i will play stuff like that and i continue to refuse...even if it does mean not getting paid or not getting a good gig.Which is alright i like djing as a hobby...and hopefully producing to fancy some attention.probabbly not but you never know.
I hope u didnt take it as a shot or anything. It sounds like u have a great situation up there. It would be fun to see.
I have actually just gotten back into a regular schedule after my equipment and assortments of records where stolen....for the second time!
I personally play almost every kind of electronic music u can think of.From the newest of the new to the classics.Except for gabber and some of those extreme sounds...alot of glitch i stay away from...unless it has a sold melody.Anything that borders closely to noise...it tends to just get annoying.

Dude, my sincere condolensces about your losses. I had my home broken into once and lost my cd collection which was around 300+ at the time. It was many years ago and I was just getting pissed about it the other day still, as I was rebuying albums I had had stolen. I work on Sunday nights, can't get any work on Friday/Saturday's without pumping the top 40 crap. Same thing is happening everywhere.

I like getting different Dj's perspectives...it's all in the ear and that next song has got to be the perfect one and the next one perfect as well...gotta keep the flow going and it's like that all night...looking to match beats and silence to perfection. And sometimes you can be near-perfect for 45 min strong...then a miss-step occurs and you know it seconds later another song that would've fit better and it kills ya.
I mostly mix for myself, CD's for on the road, or for chillin'. And agree...fetish2000 - sometimes the best mixes are all over the place, just depends how you want your ears to be treated...On a mix tape I have I go from...
1.Bjork/hunter 2.Stereolab/margerine rock 3.Pink Floyd/hey you 4.Radiohead/myxomatosis 5.Bush/Comedown 6.Broken S.S,/kc accidental...
that continues into Wilco,Swervedriver,Tarwater, and Massive Attack, Blockhead. Bush may look out of place, but it feels good once the guitars kick in, and to put an older tune you don't hear as often anymore is kinda cool, especially when people say..."Bush?? F*** ya, haven't heard that tune in awhile..not bad..."
As long as their is a flow that works for you it can happen...With Hip-hop, I throw in Nina Simone with the likes of The Roots, Guru, DJ Vadim and then a Wagon Christ tune or two...
"the sun gets passed from sea to sea, silently, and back to me"
Okay...Mixed up a Cd for someone who likes country and radio-friendly rock. This should drive them nuts....

Saint Etienne/Your Head My Voice(Aphex Twin mix) 6. Stereolab/Infinity Girl 7. Guided By Voices/Bull Dog Skin 8. Edna Swap/Torn 9. DJ Spooky/Dubtometry Interlude 10. Yeah I Know.I had like 120 pieces of vinyl stolen.Very shamefull.I have gotten over it though.I just hope whoever stole it didnt just pawn it or something...hopefully they will use it. The only reason i can get gigs on saturdays and fridays...is becuas ei have a couple friends who are some-what prominent and very busy in my area.So if they get something that they cannot do and i could. Then they throw me a bone. But that doesnt happen regularly enough. Most of the time i get private party gigs...which are cool.As long as i have free will of what to play...along with requests.
Hopefully promotors and club owners and the people will finally sanp out if it...and figure out that 90% of the music played in todays clubs is garbage and pointless.
Here's a mix tape from Robyn Hitchcock, as presented in the Fall/Winter 2004 issue of Pop Culture Press. It's kinda cool...they do one each issue with a musician...they did James Mercer (The Shins) last issue:
1. She Said, She Said: The Beatles 2. Bryan O'Lynn/The Hag with the Money: Steeleye Span 3. From A Buick 6: Bob Dylan 4. Ace of Spades: Motorhead 5. Ocean: The Velvet Underground 6. The Feast of Stephen: Mike Heron 7. Don't Look Down: Grant-Lee Philips 8. Up on Cripple Creek: The Band 9. Time (The Revelator): Gillian Welch 10. Mr. Tambourine Man: The Byrds 11. Section 43: Country Joe & the Fish 12. Ain't that So: Roxy Music 13. Coup: 23 Skidoo 14. The Ghost in You: Psychedelic Furs 15. Some Velvet Morning: Firewater 16. The Bees: Tanya Donnelly 17. The King of Carrot Flowers Part One: Neutral Milk Hotel 18. Love or Confusion: Jimi Hendrix Experience 19. Kandy Korn: Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band 20. Feel: Syd Barrett
Here's a recent mix I made for the old-school walkman. Tapes are much better than cd's while bike riding and it's the only option in the girlfriend's car aside from radio. This may be one of the coolest mixes i have heard. It is easily the best free mix ever.
Think about he widest varying mix u could imagine...and this is it.Pop songs from the 20th century basically. All mixed up and messed with.
I dont know how long this has been online...not very i am guessing. But it is very very cool.
DJ Food fucking rocks for doing this.
I am totally surprised there has not been any info on this anywhere.
Everybody should download this.Very very good.
Check this out...not just rap...not just rock...not just electronic...but all of the above. Most people will know the tracks. But you certainly wouldnt expect to hear them mixed up together or back to back.
