It is widely regarded as one of the greatest songs ever penned by an Englishman-- not named Lennon or McCartney, but same era.

A boy's not a boy and a man's not a man
til he's been with a woman like my Joanne

Same era, same country. It's a little tougher though.

Hint #2: I posted recently in the "Vinyl" thread. The song is from one of those records.

Since the only artist which is from the same era and country as the Kinks ("Waterloo Sunset") on you list of recent vinyl pick-ups is the Troggs . . . then I guess it's the Troggs. I've got one little best of by them and I listened to it but did not hear that particular lyric.

I'll go:

I guess I'll give a clue. I know there have to be people here who know and love the album this is from. I was hoping to expand the game to a different audience.

Anyways, the band is an 80s prog-metal band, and the lyric is from one of my favorite albums of all time.

Well, to be fair, they continued making music into the 90s. Hell, they even released an album last year. It wasn't too good though. I'm sure that's helpful for a metal head such as yourself Razzer

Dream Theatre is the only band that comes to mind, were they around in the 80s?

Edit: Or maybe Queensryche, would you believe that I still own my vinyl copy of their self-titled EP that I bought in 9th grade?

Heh, that's impressive(or something). Yeah, it's Queensryche. I'm no Queensryche super fan, but I am an Operation Mindcrime super fan. There have to be other people around here who are fans. I guess they just don't click on the Guess the Song thread.

I stopped listening to them with The Warning, by that time I was too cool (read: the girls I was interested thought metal was not cool) for metal.

DOH! I wish I'd known that before I posted a Queensryche lyric. Now all the ladies of metacritic are gonna think I'm uncool.

Oh, wait, everybody already knows I'm uncool.

Oh, wait, there are no ladies of metacritic. In that case, proceeding with metal quote #2(the last one was "Revolution Calling"):

"The horsemen are drawing nearer
On the leather steeds they ride
They have come to take your life"

If I recognize it, it is probably too easy... Cool

"The Four Horseman" Metallica

Wish I could speak in just one sweep
What you are and what you mean to me
Instead I mumble randomly
You stand by and enlighten me
