If it was "Affection", I'd know that. Cool

You guys both need to go to your respective listening places and put the first (and really only Modern Lovers') album on. Put it on repeat and don't come out until you know every nuance of that perfect album. Cool

Ericg, you got one?

Answer: "Dignified and Old" by the Modern Lovers

Perhaps this one will be a little easier:

I'll fake it through the day
With some help from Johnny Walker Red
Send the poison rain down the drain
To put bad thoughts in my head

"Miss Misery" - Elliott Smith. Great song, by the way.

"Tell me what to do
Now the tank is dry
Now this wheel is flat
And you know what else?
Guess what I received
In the mail today
Words of deep concern from my little brother"

What a great opener to an album this was: My name is Jonas

Here's one:

But I didn't know someone, could be so lonesome
Didn't know a heart could be tied up and held for ransom

"Bye Bye Pride" - Go-Betweens

"I pushed a penny in the toilet door
then I quickly stepped inside
to some graffitti and a greyhound paper
and the gentle thought of suicide
a razorblade would make the perfect bride"

OK. British band from the late-70s/early-80s. Three albums to their credit, all of which pretty much sank without a trace. They've only recently been released on CD.

Their lead vocalist is a seminal figure in the Men's Movement, as well as the creator of his own malt whiskey.

I looked this one up. I've never heard of them, but I'm intrigued. I'll be tracking down those reissues. Thanks for the heads up, BobA!

Shoot, I don't remember the song, but the band was Doll by Doll. You should post another.

No. If you can get DBD from the clues I gave you, it's definitely your go. Still don't know how you did it.

The song was "The Perfect Romance"

Here's an easy one from the same era:

Down on the disco floor
They make their profit
From the things they sell
To help you cob off

Two steps forward, six steps back, six steps back...

"At Home He's A Tourist" Gang of Four

Sorry, I never check this thread... here's mine:

And all I see is little dots
Some are smeared and some are spots
Feels like a murder but that's alright
Somebody said there's too much light
Pull down the shade and it's alright
It'll be over in a minute or two.

Need a hint?

This band is really good. Just checked them out the other day because DoA or GvB or CMG (nice little ring to that bit) reviewed the reissue and then I noticed p4k did too!

"Drugs" - Talking Heads.

This might be a gimme, but you guys usually make this too hard:

"I have no kicks against modern jazz
Unless they try to play it too darned fast
And change the beauty of the melody
Until it sound just like a symphony"

"Rock 'n' Roll Music"-- Um, the band in the movie Backbeat did a pretty terrific version of it.

Here's the next one.

Dirty old river, must you keep rolling
Flowing into the night
People so busy, makes me feel dizzy
Taxi light shines so bright

Hint: The greatest song ever!
