I started a thread just like this over a year ago, but I figured I'd start a new one since opinions change and I'd still like to see people's opinions who had previously posted on this subject. The question is what bands are you looking forward to the most over the next 10 years. I know it's extremely tough to only put 5 groups on your list, but I think it makes it more interesting. Anyway, I'll start:

1. Fleet Foxes (my favorite debut in years)
2. The National (as great as the last 2 albums were, I still think they have something better)
3. Radiohead (if they keep making records like In Rainbows I can't leave them off this list)
4. Midlake (have loved Banman and Van Occupanther and can't wait till their next)
5. My Morning Jacket (I like Evil Urges a lot and it's still a letdown. That's how highly I think of them.)

And let's try to keep it to 5. It was almost impossible for me to leave Spoon, LCD, and 50 other bands off, but I think it's a better debate if we can only name 5. Anyway, hope people enjoy the discussion.

Grizzly Bear
Spoon
Fleet Foxes

Okkervil River

Hard to narrow it down to just five, like you mentioned.

No way will Radiohead be relevant for another 10 years. As good as In Rainbows was, it wasn't the kind of album you'd see from an up and coming band. It was kind of like their Goat's Head Soup. They've still got it, but don't expect them to be major players in the next decade.

My list:
1. The National
2. Okkervil River
3. TV on the Radio
4. Arcade Fire
5. The Hold Steady

What a cynical outlook. The only way Radiohead won't be relevant for another ten years is if they choose to not be relevant. Which is very likely since they are only getting older, having more babies and are going to want to spend more time with their respective families.

In terms of their musical ability, they have plenty of awesome albums ahead of them. I think that if they really want to, they could continue making great music for twenty more years.

By the way, your list is good but TV on the Radio? Those guys peaked with their 2004 album and have only gone downhill since then.

I'm not being cynical, it's just past experience talking. For a band of 15 years to continue to be major players in music for another 10 would be crazy. The Stones couldn't do it. R.E.M. and U2 couldn't do it either. One could argue Bob Dylan, though he spent a long period of time making some pretty bad albums, and although he's gotten his groove back a little, I'm not sure he's a major player in music today. He's just a guy that still makes a decent record every now and again.

I normally tend to agree with Eric on these kinds of questions. Even though I've never been a fan of a band for a really long period of time (I only really started listening to music 5 years ago), I've been disappointed too many times by bands I thought incapable of making an album I wouldn't like. I like to think that Radiohead is something special though, an exception to the trend. There are really 3 artists/bands I feel that way about, my top 3 on my list of 5.

1. Elephant Micah
2. J. Tillman
3. Radiohead
4. Okkervil River

for my 5th pick, I'm gonna go out on a limb and pick a band that's made one very good album and one awesome one, but nothing else of notice:

5. The Snake the Cross the Crown

Given the musical transformation they made from an emo-punk band on their first EP to a kind of alternative rock band on their second album to an alt-country band on the amazing Cotton Teeth, I feel they're a dynamic band that won't be content to sit on their laurels bur will rather be always looking forward. Plus, did I mention Cotton Teeth is freaking incredible?

There are some other bands that've made a ton of albums I love, but their musical output seems to be slowing and/or reducing in quality somewhat. Mainly, I'm thinking of Jason Molina/Magnolia Electric Co, Iron & Wine, Sun Kil Moon/Mark Kozelek, Centro-matic/South San Gabriel/Will Johnson, Richard Buckner, Four Tet, and Grandaddy.

Other up-and-comers that I'm really looking forward to seeing what they do: Tallest Man on Earth, Doug Burr, the Knife, the Royal Army Recording Co/Kenny Tompkins, the Great Outdoors, Stendeck, Windmill, Miracle Fortress, Thee Stranded Horse, Or the Whale, Tyler Ramsey, Rural Alberta Advantage, Haley Bonar, Ladyhawk, Winona, and Ready Fire Aim among others.

Pssh, that album had a great first half and a snoozer of a second half - Young Liars was much better. Return to Cookie Mountain was even better, and Dear Science is looking like a winner if the two songs they've put on their website are any indication.

Good call with BSP. Those guys have only impressed me more and more with each release.

I'll go:

Bon Iver
Fleet Foxes
The Strokes - do they have it in them to come back after the disappointment of Jukebox?
Peter Bjorn and John
Of Montreal

You know, I've decided to start posting again and I love the responses! It's great.

First, Eric, I can see where you are coming from. Judging a band's future by other's pasts kind of makes sense, but that's only kind of. I disagree with you on The Rolling Stones; I basically love everything they have put out. And don't tell Mark that you think Bob Dylan only puts out a decent album every now and then!

Like RL said, I think Radiohead would be the exception to the rule. They re-started the trend of reinventing yourself with every album. They have been pioneers beyond the fact that they used their influences to craft spectacular albums Well, you know how I feel on them.

By the way RL, that The Snake the Cross the Crown is a sexy pick. I became a fan of their album from last year after you mentioned it in every other thread you posted and I'd be interested to see where they go from here. But also, best said to narrow it down to five, not give a freaking long list! Red Face

And Chams, I think you know me well enough to know I pretty much hated TV on the Radio's last album. I don't think they are as great as everyone else does. And you should know I like to put them down just to ruffle some feathers here and there. Either way, I will surely check out their newest album and if I think it is amazing, I will proudly admit where I was wrong.

I'd read it Shad. You're gonna have to do more than that to produce it for the world though Wink

I choose:

1. Animal Collective. After a short 'adjustment period' sort of thing, where I was like "hey I dig this song, but are those screams and sound effects and that droning quite necessary?", it became apparent this band are actually totally brilliant. They have so many wonderful songs. Love their unpredictability also - I've seen some youtubes of new songs in concert that were kinda like a more dancey person pitch sorta thing, but then stuff I've read about the new album in January seems totally separate. I get the impression this band has more great ideas than they know what the hell to do with. Seem like great guys too, from everything I've seen of them. Can't wait for new stuff.

2. Joanna Newsom. Harps rule. Guitars? Fuck guitars, guys. Seriously though, JN is easily my favourite songwriter of the moment. I think she's the best voc melodist in the world, except perhaps the 2 AC dudes. And her harp arrangements rule, she comes up with bass lines and counter melodies for her songs better than most bands. Chances of ever topping Ys are pretty slim, but that's ok. Her songs hover around uniformly great. She's written about 1 or 2 I don't like, ever. Even the early stuff, of the 2 self released EPs is awesome. Check it out. If you think you can handle her sounding ~10 years younger than she does on Mender.

3. <The combined might of the projects of Spencer Krug> cause, in 10 years, who knows how many bands this guy will be in? He seems intent on carving out about 5 artists worth of discographies in half the time, and I like that. In the 20 albums he will surely be involved in in the next 10 years, at least one will have every song as good as I'll Believe In Anything, The Mending of the Gown or California Dreamer. And that, will rawwwk.

4. Arcade Fire. Great band, i spose. Lots of people contributing great arrangements to their songs, without overcrowding it. I dig that redhead's work. Though I doubt Funeral will be topped, I look forward to them putting out plenty of good stuff in the future, and I think they'll be around a long time. Hopefully perhaps a more happy go lucky/optimistic album sometime? I remember they're taking a break or something? What's up with that? You've only made 2 albums guys, get the fuck back on it.

5. The Shins. Haven't got a lot to say here. Wincing was a bit of a disappointment considering how long I had to wait for it, but, I have faith. Mercer's got skill.

Wrapping up, I reserve the right to replace the shins with TVotR once I hear the new album. And finally, I think Bradford Cox/Deerhunter could do great things. Too early to tell though.

This is more hopeful wishing than actually probable, but here goes:

1. My Morning Jacket - hoping for more "Z"-like albums.

2. The Shins - I would like to see them go in a psychedelic direction.

3. Raconteurs/White Stripes - I'm always interested in hearing what ol'Jacky White is doing.

4. Radiohead - Will they keep going? I'd be happy for countless rehashes of "In Rainbows". I think they have perfected their sound and should stick with it, but I wouldn't be surprised by a complete u-turn, either. Or nothing at all, for that matter.

5. ??? The Black Keys - maybe. I think they are hitting their stride, but how much more can they expand the blues in a two-man band? I'd put PJ Harvey or the Strokes, but I doubt either will keep going for 10 years. Maybe Andrew Bird now that I think about it.

I noticed that I only put pretty well established artists on my list. There are way too many good indie bands that put out a couple of good albums and completely disappear for me to put 10 years of stock into any of them based on the strength of one album (cough, Fleet Foxes/Arcade Fire/YYY's, end cough). I should have left the fifth spot open for a "reuniting" band, maybe a Nirvana reunion with Frances Cobain singing! (just kidding Big Grin)

FKA - If you get to put them down whenever you like, I get to defend them! Wink I know it's fun, though. (Just see me on the subject of Spencer Krug.)

And now for my list, why the heck not:

1. TV on the Radio - not just because I just argued for them. I think they're legitimately awesome and talented and have a lot of life ahead of them. (Dear Science, don't prove me wrong.)

2. Of Montreal - Though I'm not the BIGGEST fan of Skeletal Lamping, if nothing else it's proof that Kevin Barnes will never, ever run out of ideas. Ever.

3. Arcade Fire - Fuck the haters, love these guys, here's hoping they can keep up their level of quality through album #3.

4. Neko Case - Hopefully my marriage to her will not preclude her putting out any more amazing material. She's the only lady singer/songwriter I know whose work doesn't seem like it has been cranked out for the soft-rock-station-you-can-play-at-work Grey's Anatomy soundtrack crowd. (Though to be fair, I haven't really listened to PJ Harvey)

And comedy option:

5. The Postal Service. Album #2 has to be out within the next ten years, right? Wink
