Hmm, under two minutes? This is hard but this is what I thought of (left out a lot of what has already been mentioned.) If someone has already said any of the following, sorry: The Smiths – “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want” The Beatles – “She Came in Through the Bathroom Window,” “I Will,” “Why Don’t We Do it in the Road?” Talking Heads – “Who is It?” Spoon – “Sister Jack” (Piano Demo) The 5. 6. 7. 8’s – “Woo Hoo” John Lennon – “Hold On” The White Stripes – “Let’s Build a Home,” “When I Hear My Name,” “You’re Pretty Good Looking (For a Girl)” The Beach Boys – “Little Deuce Coupe” Nine Inch Nails – “Big Man with a Gun” Modest Mouse – “Wild Packs of Family Dogs” Gorillaz – “Don’t Get Lost in Heaven” Brian Wilson – “I’m In Great Shape/I Wanna Be Around/Workshop” Yeah Yeah Yeahs – “Pin” Of Montreal – “Will You Come and Fetch Me,” “At Night Trees Aren’t Sleeping,” "Sink the Seine" J Dilla – “Don’t Cry” The Go! Team – “Feelgood by Numbers” Kanye West – “Crack Music” Some new ones: PJ Harvey – “Broken Harp” Dr. Dog – “Old News” Blitzen Trapper – “Badger’s Black Brigade”
----- I go to sleep and think you're next to me.

I think "Setting Vs. Rising" (a little over two minutes long, I guess) is actually my favorite song off Random Spirit Lover. Though it seems like a sort of transition song, I find it surprisingly catchy. "Mazurra", "Mazurka", and "Haul" are all cool sub-two minute songs off of Calexico's Spoke. Most of the songs on that album are under three minutes long and very cool.

Lots of good additions here. I am especially kicking myself for not mentioning "I Don't Want To Hear It" and "Asleep and Dreaming." Here are some others I neglected: Unrest, "Can't Sit Still" (1:43) Music Machine, "Talk Talk" (1:59) Tim Hardin, "Reason to Believe" (2:00)!! The Castaways, "Liar, Liar" (1:55) Eddie Cochrane, "Summertime Blues" (2:00) Swearing At Motorists, "Flying Pizza" (1:46) The Jam, "Boy About Town" (2:00) Sleater-Kinney, "It's Enough" (1:47) Maurice Williams, "Stay" (1:38)!! Misfits, "I Turned Into a Martian" (1:42) Tobin Sprout, "All Used Up" (2:00) The Replacements, "Customer" (1:29) or "Careless" (1:08) Both fantastic!

A few more good ones:
Outkast - "?" from Stankonia, one of the highlights of that album for me McLusky - a big chunk of their catalog, but I'll go with "Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues" (1:50) Menomena - "Running" (1:51) Liz Phair - "Glory" (1:29)
and a little over time, but classic: Beck - "Mutherfuker" (2:05)

Pixies, Wire and Guided By Voices are the bands that come to mind for me.
A little bit of trivia. The shortest recorded song ever is Naplam Death's 'You Suffer', clocking in at a whopping 1.316 seconds.

The crazy thing is that they still do verse, chorus, verse, bridge, guitar solo, chorus in that short amount of time

Primal Scream, "Velocity Girl" (1:23) Just ran across this golden little nugget over at Little Hits. No wonder it inspired a band name.

Not so fast Y&WA. I love some of your additions. Especially "This Will Be Our Year" and "Girl Named Captain". I also stumbled across another perfectly formed pop song under 120 seconds this morning via my random shuffle: The Pooh Sticks, "Teenage High" (1:58)

Ohh, that song feels longer then it is. I had no idea it was only 1:40. I still like it a whole lot. I'll also throw in most of Madvillian's Madvilliany, with special mention of "Curls" and "Operation Lifesaver a.k.a Mint Test".
Great selection, although my choice for best songs would be Accordion and Do Not Fire!

Yeah I love that track. It was one of the selections I had for my mix, but it got cut. Actually I had as many outtakes as tracks that actually went on, maybe I should do a volume 2. There are plenty of poppy and punky tracks under 2 minutes, but I was kinda trying to showcase more unusual structures where I could. Some songs can be downright epic in under 2 minutes. The Trail of Dead track is a good example.

Im in this "Flavor of the Month Club" where we all take turns trading mix CDs. The very first submission was called "Bang for Your Buck." Each song was under 2:30. My buddy used the same thought process. Here's what he came up with: quote: 1) Oh Claire - Cheap Trick (it isn't "Hello There" but it is an appropriate greeting) 2) A Salty Salute - GBV (an obvious choice, but one of my all-time favorite album openers) 3) Anything That's Rock & Roll - Tom Petty (I feel like this song is bursting at the seams, whatever that means) 4) Same Old Song & Dance - Tim Easter (loved this live & it gets stuck in my head all the time) 5) King of Carrot Flowers - Neutral Milk Hotel (nod to XXXX) 6) Blizzard of 77 - Nada Surf (the first of several songs I got from XXXX mixes) 7) Hangin' on the Telephone - The Nerves (I love the Blondie version, but needed an original among all the covers here. I recently heard the Cat Power version of this & loved it too) 8) Plumb Line - Archers of Loaf (XXXX and I once talked about how this song makes us think of XXXX; barely beat out Web in Front for the mix) 9) My Uncle Used to Love Me But She Died - Roger Miller (I have good memories of XXXX break-dancing to this at my going-away party) 10) Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan (fun version of this) 11) Molly's Chambers - Kings of Leon (to me, this is pretty close to the perfect rock song) 12) Car Radio - Spoon (lots of choices from Spoon; don't really know why I settled on this one) 13) Anything You Want - Swearing at Motorists (I have trouble memorizing lyrics, but I know all the words to this one) 14) Three Girl Rhumba - Wire (had to have Wire on here somewhere; love the build of this) 15) I Can't Explain - The Who (another near perfect rock song) 16) With a Girl Like You - The Troggs (better known for "Wild Thing" but this is damn catchy) 17) Walking Out on Love - The Beat (1:47 of pure pop bliss) 18) Never Talking to You Again - Husker Du (it took me a while to 'get' Husker Du, but this helped me get through the initial learn to love it phase) 19) Please, Please, Please - The Smiths (I always want this song to go on longer; Costanza-esque as it leaves me wanting more) 20) Did I Say - Teenage Fanclub (odd choice, but great harmonies and I love the little drum thing) 21) Sound of Settling - Death Cab for Cutie (one of the first songs I picked for the mix) 22) Between the Bars - Elliott Smith (I was torn between this or Say Yes) 23) Reason to Believe - Tim Hardin (one of my all-time favorites, though I like Rod's version better) 24) Tragedy - Damien Jurado (I was tempted to go with the rocking Jurado, but instead went with his more mellow side. This song grows on me everytime I play it) 25) Fox on the Run - Tom T. Hall (it is Tom T. Hall - need I say more?) 26) Marie Marie - The Blasters (Dave Alvin for XXXX) 27) Don't Slander Me - Lou Ann Barton (I like the country twinge of this version; better than the High Score cover of this) 28) Ice Cube - Clem Snide (the closest thing to hip-hop on this mix, if you can still call Ice Cube hip-hop) 29) I Was Made to Love Her - The Beach Boys (harmonies, people) 30) Rich Girl - Hall & Oates (I cannot understand why H & O are not given more love, though it might have to do with Oates anchor-like quality on Hall's talents) 31) Stumbling Through the Dark (acoustic version) - The Jayhawks (more harmonies, people. I think my growing appreciation of good singing is a sign of my aging) 32) How Can That Be - Ben Lee (stolen from XXXX #2) 33) Skeleton - Elf Power (stolen from XXXX #3) 34) Start - The Jam (I swear this was on my mix before I saw it on that commercial) 35) Stop Your Sobbing - The Kinks (I like the Pretenders' version, but it was too long; this is guaranteed to get stuck in your head) 36) Favorite Thing - The Replacements (I know XXXX would have preferred an earlier Mats addition, but I've always been a mid-era fan. I love the "bar nothing" line) 37) Tickle Me Emo - The Carter Administration (stole this from XXXX) 38) Wave of Mutilation - Superdrag (I like how poppy their version of this came out) 39) This Ain't No Picnic - The Minutemen (this is on my short list of songs to play to people who want to know what college rock is all about) 40) Good Night - Cheap Trick (just being silly here)
The names have been changed to protect the innocent.
