I'm not sure if anyone else on here writes (books, poetry, novellas, etc.), but I was just wondering what everyone else listened to spark up inspiration. Personally, I listen to short instrumental songs for poetry, and then longer instrumental songs for short stories and other longer writing mediums.
I agree with Godspeed You Black Emperor! (I'm used to the only possition of the exclamation mark). but I also used to write to a lot of Aphex Twin stuff.
You should try the group called Rachel's. I listen to System/Layers when I need something quieter yet deeply atmospheric. It's really good music too. I recomend it to everyone, even if they aren't writting.

I just listen to whatever makes me feel right... nothing specific. Since I'm typically writing about music, I have the ability to turn any essay topic into a paper about music, I generally find myself listening to music related to the topic.

Some other selections that are more wordy are still OK for math/quantitative work, but I need wordless music/nearly so for writing.
I'll back Music has the Right to Children and Sigur Ros. I'd maybe add AIR to the list as well.
Music to listen to while doing math would be another interesting topic. Personally I think Pinback is the only reason I passed any of my Calculus classes. It just makes me want to do math for some reason.

I listen to Brian Eno's "Music for Airports" often when I am writing or trying to study material of any kind. I definitely agree with whoever mentioned Aphex Twin as well, especially "Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2". That album creates the perfect atmosphere for writing.

Agreed. Except for 1/1 unless you're writing a suicide note. That song just depresses the hell out of me. Which is odd, because it's so simple.

I actually don't like working to "Music for Airports" - I find it just too static. I guess it's a fine balance, but something that's too active/lyrics-filled will distract me, and something that's so slow as that will make me turn it off. I do like "Another Green World" for studying. I haven't heard "Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2" - I might give that a shot.
An old girlfriend of mine would torture herself over any writing she had to do for her degree. She would put it off until the due date and then go for days drinking cup after cup of coffee, not sleeping, writing and crying.
The essays were always overdue, but she always got an A. A toxic mixture of procrastination, perfectionism, and positive reinforcement.
Once, during one of these travesties, I fled the house for the day. I called to check up on her mid-afternoon, and she was trying to calm herself. She asked about some upbeat, happy music she could listen to while working. I told her to put on the Family Stone's Greatest Hits. When I arrived home a couple of hours later, there she was on the floor, surrounded by papers, bawling her eyes out. As I tried to console her, I realized that THERE'S A RIOT GOIN' ON was playing. She just put on the first Sly CD she saw.
