It sounds cool, and they need 300 people to pre-order to get it rolling. The free CD sounds cool, too.

Hey, pE and f_s, did you go ahead and order?

Just curious.

I've pre-ordered mine.

FYI, LT:

The Sun Sawed in 1/2 is getting back together, at least for the IPO fest. I hear rumors of a show in the STL, too. I saw the final show in 2001.

Yep, I jumped on the Not Lame book bandwagon, and tossed in an order for two of the David Grahame CD's while I was at it.

I've been totally underwhelmed by the David Grahame discs I bought a few years back. I'm not sure what the hype is on him, other than his vocal similarity to Macca.

Wow.

The new Orange Peels is CRAZY good power pop/chamber pop. I really liked the last one (So far) and the main Orange Peels dude's solo record (Available Light) by Allan Clapp) but this is pure, sunny summertime pop. Simply gorgeous.

Also in the power pop/chamber pop spectrum, I've been enjoying the latest by The Sharp Things, Foxes and Hounds, which features well over a dozen performers on strings and such. I've got their first one on its way to me as well, cheaply.

Hi,
This is Tim from The Sun Sawed in 1/2. Yes, the Chicago IPO show was wonderful. It was great having all of the guys together again onstage and the party afterwards was fantastic! For now, however, this stands as simply a one-off show. There is, of course, possibility of us reuniting for other shows or maybe even a recording project in the future, but for now I am concentrating on my new band "Fresh Mowed Lawn". I live in Boston now after 6 years in Italy and Austria and have recently put together a splendid band. Doug(the singer) lives in Chicago, while Ken Rose, bassist, and Steve Bunck, drummer and Ken Kase, guitarist all reside in St. Louis. So, logistically it is improbable that we will be playing again in St. Louis in the near future. Sorry to say, but it was really a great show in Chicago and I am sorry for those who missed it.

Bewilderbeest was our final album and reflected my time in Kyiv, Ukraine where as Fizzy Lift was all about ending one serious relationship and starting a new one. Totally different themes and different sounds. Ken Kase was a huge factor in Bewilderbeest (check out his Song No.11, Brilliant!) where Doug and I (along with Keith Olsen) really fuelled Fizzy Lift. I can't wait to get the new album "Fresh Mowed Lawn" out. It was recorded in Vienna, Austria with amazing jazz pros as the rhythm section and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra doing the classical score. There are 11 new songs of mine and, for the first time, I am doing the lead vocals. It should be out soon on Not Lame. Anyhow, what did you think of Bewilderbeest? I like "Kiss Her Like You Mean It, Beholder and Shining Knight" the best.

I bought a copy of "Fizzylift" a few years back.

Nice pop CD, but have since heard that "Bewilderbeast" is really the band's tour de force.

Bad info from the Riverfront Times, I think. Welcome to the Forums, Tim. I really enjoyed your records, and was fortunate to see you in St. Louis shortly after I moved here in 2001.

I think Fizzy Lift and Bewilderbeest are my two faves, although I've got copies of the earlier records and there are good moments on all.

Feel free to keep us abreast of future reunion shows and what's going on with Fresh Mowed Lawn. And feel free to talk music on this thread, or any other. There are a few certfied (or certifiable!) power pop nuts here.

Those who like sunny California-style power pop would be extremely happy with the new one by The Orange Peels, Circling the Sun, on Parasol.

It's a continuation of past great power pop from the group (check out leader Allan Clapp's solo records, too) and it may well be my power pop record of 2005.

I was surprised this week to learn of a new Dwight Twilley album, 47 Moons. He's signed to Digital Musicworks International, which bills itself as a next-generation music label, which means they're offering their artists exclusively via digital download, sort of like the net labels Imprezu21 has been talking about. In the case of DMI, though, you download their artists thorough iTunes, Rhapsody, Napster and such.

I've not listened to the album enough to comment at length, but on my first couple of listens it sounds to be a good addition to Twilley's catalog. Anybody else heard it?

'Alright' by Supergrass has to be one of the best power pop songs I've ever heard.

...just thought I'd say...

Hi,
This is Tim Rose from "The Sun Sawed in 1/2" and "Fresh Mowed Lawn". Just a quick plug to say that both bands will be performing at the Boston IPO festival November 12th and 13th, 2005. The Sun show will feature original members, Tim Rose(guitar), Ken Rose(bass), Doug Bobenhouse(vocals), Steve Bunck(drums on Mind Flip and Fizzy Lift), Ken Kase (guitar) and Phillip Aiken(keyboards, originally from Buffalo Tom and now playing with Fresh Mowed Lawn. If you know of anyone in the New England area, get the buzz going. The shows will be at the Paradise lounge in Allston. Also look for Fresh Mowed Lawn soon from Not Lame. Cheers,
Tim

Yo! Cool

I don't live anywhere around there, but I DO believe that several members do, including one who formerly ONLY lived inside an octagon! Best of Luck! Plus everybody who can make it, tell us what's WHAT!

PS-Earlier Yo-Haters, please excuse my Yo! Cool

Agreed, amazingly awesome song.

edit: There are at least 3 people (myself included) that live in or near Boston. I'm at school and have no transportation though so I won't be making many concerts not in the city.

I know I'm leaving out many favorites, but here are some of my top favorite power pop cds:

DM3 "Road To Rome"
The Someloves "Something or Other"
The Chevelles "Gigantic"
The Summer Suns "The Summer Suns"
Jeffrey Foskett "Thru My Window"
Jeremy Morris "Pop Dreams"
Ken Sharp "1301 Highland Avenue"
Toothpaste 2000 "Bachelorette"
Weird Summer "Incarnata Mysterica"
Richard X Heyman "Cornerstone"
Kyle Vincent "Kyle Vincent"
The Toms "The Toms"
The Lolas "Silver Dollar Sunday"

Any & all of the International Pop Overthrow comps. I enjoy practically every release I've heard on JAM, Not Lame and Sound Asleep labels. The Bam Balam comps from the late 90s are all worthwhile.

For those who might care (LT?), Mike Viola (of Candy Butchers fame) has a new record out. It's available through his site, but as a vinyl-only pressing, oddly enough.

HOWEVER...the first 200 people to order the vinyl get a CD version as well. I got mine today...a pressed CD (not a burn) but with no packaging.

There are also two new CD's out by power popper/soft rocker Kyle Vincent: a new studio disc and a collection of rarities.

Thanks for the tip, pE. My copy is now on its way.

I noticed two albums absent from your various lists this year, Eugene Edwards and Kevin Tihista's Home Demons. Did I miss both last year and am only getting hip to them as they've enjoyed wider distribution this year?

Somehow, the Eugene Edwards slipped under my radar. I just bought a cheap copy from Amazon, so I'm looking forward to it.

The Kevin Tihista I have, and love, but I didn't include it mainly because it's versions of songs I already own on his studio records. I actually have the longer, handmade version of Home Demons with cheap packaging and more songs, to go along with the nicer, shorter 'official' version...

I guess I could look it up on All Music, but has Tihista previously recorded "Sweet?" This is the first I've heard it and it's on a very short list of my favorite songs I've heard this year. It reminds me more than a little bit of Big Star's "Thirteen."

As for Eugene Edwards, it's been a strong enough year across genres that it's slid pretty far in my year end album list, but the track "Victim at Bedtime" is right up there with the Tihista. I look forward to your thoughts on it.
