I imagine that most people who post here regularly love more than enough records to make a top 50 list pretty easily. Personally, I would have a hard time stopping at 50. I probably wouldn't hit any "B's" or "B+'s" until #150-200.

Or 500. (This year I only have six so far, but that still proves my point. This year...cough.)

Well, maybe we set the bars for A- and A at different places...
I guess it depends on how comprehensive the list has to be. If we're looking for 'these are the ones we consider the best of the best of the best' then ten or twenty is just fine. If we're going for a whole comprehensive list of things that anybody liked at all, then we can go as high as we want.
What I'm thinking of is a short 'best of best of best' list, and because of that I would limit the number of items on each individual list to prevent albums that everybody likes but nobody loves getting higher just because everybody owns them.

I love ths stuff he (she?) did for the Zelda games. Have you ever heard Gerudo Valley orchestrated? It's great.

It's "he." I'll have to find that... I have the Zelda: Ocarina of Time OST, but I've never heard Guerdo Valley orchestrated. There's a lot of videogame music that is simply the most awe-inspiring music I've ever listened to. Even though I don't understand the words (and most of the time there aren't words anyway), I think that Japanese orchestra/videogame music is the best orchestrated music of our generation. I suggest Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy X) to anyone who is casually interested - you may be pleasantly surprised with what you'll discover. Oh, sorry topic.... (pats on head) I would like to add Broken Social Scene: You Forgot it in People to my list

I love these threads ...
So, alone on an island with my favourite albums ...I would have a ton if I could, but I'll whittle it down to 10, in no particualy order, except for the first one ...
1-Radiohead - OK COMPUTER ...the single, best album I've ever heard. Nothing rings with me like this album. If I could have only ONE album this would be it.
2-Elliott Smith - EITHER/OR ...sublime and dark. The production is simple and lo-fi, his voice is so convicted without being contrived. This album has so much vibe.
3-Vince Guaradli - A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS ...I simply treasure this record. Every Christmas it's the first thing I put on to get me in the spirit (and Christmas is not a holiday I get all that jacked-up for), but this album makes me feel like it's the holidays. I love the children singing - it's very eerie.
4-Interpol - TURN ON THE BRIGHT LIGHTS ..a modern day classic. I love it so much - the songs are cool, the production is tight, the band sounds fresh and it has vibe.
5-Beatles - PLEASE, PLEASE ME ...a lot of people love 'Revolver' or 'Pepper' or 'Abbery Road' or 'Rubber Soul' - and I love all those too. But the Beatles first album, IMO, reveals everything that is great about the band - focused tunes, amazing harmonies, and raw power. This album reeks of a band about to burst. It's one of the true great rock records of all-time.
6-Nick Drake - PINK MOON ...oh man, this album is so pure. From what I've read, he recorded it in a day and left the mistakes as they were. It's sparse and dark and so cool.
7-REM - MURMUR ...love this album. I love most of their stuff, but this was the first and really had cool production and great songs.
8-U2 - THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE ...IMO, this album is so much better than 'Joshua Tree' or 'Achtung Baby'. I love the drumming and the rawness of Bono's vocals, especially on 'Pride' and the title track. Amazing production from Lanois/Eno.
9-Arcade Fire - FUNERAL ...it might be cliche to add this album, but this is one of those albums that won't ever go away. It is timeless. Great songs, great flow and powerful vocals. I loved it from the second I heard it and I go back ot it every once in a while and am still amazed at how fresh it sounds. I really believe that this album will go down as an all-time classic.
10-Ennio Morricone - THE MISSION ...The first 'soundtrack' I fell in love with.
Honourable mentions ...Paul Simon - 'Paul Simon'; Simon & Garfunkel - 'Bridge Over Troubled Water'; Yes - 'The Yes Album'; Genesis - 'A Trick of the Tail'; Steely Dan -'Katy Lied' and countless others ...I could go on and on and ...

Looks like this thread's been going for quite a while ... so I'd better continue it.
In no particular order ...
1. Tom Waits - Rain Dogs 2. The Beatles - Abbey Road 3. Tool - Undertow 4. The Tragically Hip - Road Apples 5. Nick Drake - Pink Moon 6. Miles Davis - The Complete Birth of the Cool 7. Radiohead - OK Computer 8. U2 - The Joshua Tree 9. Johnny Cash - The Essential Johnny Cash (not the best collection, but a great overview) 10. Pink Floyd - Echoes: The best Of ...
There are a few greats I've left off here (how I could live without REM's Automatic for the People, for example, I don't know), but in the interest of both bringing most of my faves and recognizing I'm going to need some serious diversity in my music collection on that island, there it is.

Way too hard to narrow down to only 10. 25 would allow for more variety while still allowing representation from favorite artists.

Not a lot out of the ordinary going on here, but hey it is a list and it's my list. You don't have to listen.
1. Neutral Milk Hotel - In an Aeroplane over the sea. (the obvious choice, but I go back to this more then any other cd in my collection, it's like a drug, or really good cd)
2. Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy and the Appendix. (The cd alone is amazing, add the few songs from the appendix and it's a masterpiece, listen to Sheff when he rips out the rant section of another radio song, wow)
3. The Fiery Furnaces - Blueberry Boat (Its not that I've completely fallen in love with the album as much as the fact that I know there is enought there to keep me busy, I've given this cd many many turns and still don't feel like I've scratched the surface)
4. Arcade Fire - Funeral (Another given in my eyes, the cd is so layered it, not only stands up to repeated listening, but improves, an amazing cd that deserves all of the attention it now gets)
5. Pearl Jam - Versus (My sentimental 90's album, I was a huge fan for a long time and going back to this album puts me in a different place, that might come in handy on a desert island. Maybe Fiji?)
6. Bright Eyes - Fevers and Mirrors (I usually get a little flack for liking this one, but im being honest here. Every song does something for me and I think on a desert island you could use some of Coners optimism, oh crap wait....)
7. Antony and the Johnsons - Im a bird now (I could listen to this guy sing forever, and even though the topic of some of the songs is grim it gives off an uplifting vibe, great cd)
8. Jeff Mangum - Live at Jittery Joe's (Very raw, yes that a baby, but seeing the man who would later go on to create aeroplane relaxing with friends who yell out the songs they want to hear. Yeah, I love Jeff Mangum)
9. The Decemberists - Picturesque (I know my choices all have similar qualities and I know a great deal of them come form this year, what can I say it was a good year, and with picturesque Malloy weaves more of his Cannterbury Tales type song stories and I love it)
10. Johnny Cash - Live at Folson Prison (another sentimental entry, you gotta have some Cash, and not just becasue of all the Walk the Line jazz thats going on now, beause he was an amazing talent, and I like this cd)
Again, yes, many recent entries, stop yelling.
