1. Violent Femmes 2. Nevermind 3. Replacements - Let it Be 4. Clash 5. Bob Dylan (First Album) 6. Purple rain 7. Beat Farmers - Tales of the New West 8. Feelies - Only Life (Even though I've been assured I'm wrong)(I'm not) 9. Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots 10. CCR - Willy and the Poorboys
No apologies, Hal. I sometimes think I'm the only person in the world who thinks _Let It Be_ is the best of The Replacements. I also like the addition of _Purple Rain_.
As others have pointed out, this list changes based on such intangibles as mood, weather, company, and general disposition of the day. Today, I'd bring, in no particular order:
1. Beach Boys-Pet Sounds (although the new 30 track best-of might be a close contender) 2. The Replacements-Tim (a touchstone record from my teens-I'm not sure it's their best, but it evokes SO much of my youth, I can't even imagine not having it around) 3. Scud Mountain Boys (the soundtrack to another period of my life) 4. Whiskeytown-Strangers Almanac 5. Go-Betweens-16 Lover's Lane 6. Waterboys-Fisherman's Blues 7. Lloyd Cole-s/t (these last three are all strangely connected in my head...I can't take one without wanting to hear the other two) 8. Fountains of Wayne-Welcome Interstate Managers (unless my wife is with me on the island. She HATES this record, my favorite of last year) 9. Jellyfish-Bellybutton (the longer, Japanese version) 10. Uncle Tupelo 87-93 (It's missing some of my favorite songs, but it's the best distillation of the four records)
If I were more clever, I'd bring a bunch of 2 or 3 cdsets, like the U2 greatest hits discs, the double Australian You Am I best-of, the Elvis Costello reissues, etc. Or maybe Wilco's Summerteeth and Jason Falkner's Author Unknown or Can You Still Feel. But I think my choices are satisfactory. Today. Maybe.
1. Jason Falkner Presents: Author Unknown 2. Iron and Wine--Creek Drank the Cradle 3. Tom Waits--Rain Dogs 4. The Flaming Lips--Soft Bulletin 5. The Beatles--White Album 6. Brendan Benson--Lapalco 7. Hem--Rabbit Songs 8. Red House Painters--Songs for a Blue Guitar 9. The Shins--Chutes Too Narrow 10. The Unicorns--Who Will Cut Our Hair...
It's funny because recently I had the epiphany that what I like best in music is what's next. Given the scenario, though, I take a long look backwards...
1. Johann Sebastian Bach - The Goldberg Variations perf. Glenn Gould - A State Of Wonder: The Complete Goldberg Variations 1955 & 1981 2. The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band 3. Ludwig van Beethoven - Symphonny No. 6 "Pastorale" perf. Gunter Wand/North German Radio Symphony Orchestra, Hamburg (a hard decision over the 9th, but on a desert island the 6th is, I think, well, happier) 3. James Brown - Live At The Apollo (1963) 4. Patsy Cline - 12 Greatest Hits (I generally think collections are dull on a list like this, but just one collection, that's all I ask) 5. John Coltrane - A Love Supreme 6. Duke Ellington - ...And His Mother Called Him Bill 7. Marvin Gaye - What's Going On? 8. Franz Josef Haydn - String Quartets perf. Kodaly Quartet (I can't cheat and take the 23-disc box set, but any single disc would be great) 9. Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run 10. Muddy Waters - At Newport
Ahhh...needs more country, more blues, more jazz, something recorded after 1989, more EVERYTHING!

Hey PhilosopherEric, Lose the wife!!!
Well-played, sir! It is a fine record. But seeing the plight of all of my single friends, I'll just play it in the car by myself rather than try dating again. I think I played this record SO MUCH last year that the opening notes to "Mexican Wine" drive her over the edge. Thankfully, it's one of only a few things I like that she doesn't. I drove from St Louis to Nashville to see them last summer, and then went to a STATE FAIR to see them again! That's right...a STATE FAIR! Brilliant record, nice guys, and the video for "Stacy's Mom" was not hard to watch, either.
I've decided to choose the 10 albums that really carry me through life, regardless of their so-called "artistic" merit.
So here goes.
Alanis Morissette - Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie (can't live without it!) Radiohead - OK Computer Radiohead - Kid A Oasis - What's the Story (Morning Glory) Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill Basement Jaxx - Remedy Sam Roberts - We Were Born In A Flame Kylie Minogue - Fever (for those Saturday nights) Blur, The Best of Lucinda Williams - World Without Tears
Looking through all these lists, I think I've counted OK Computer as the most popular soundtrack to desert islands. Seems strange, no? I suppose its appropriate; What better way to get really excited about being stuck in the middle of god-knows-where than to be reminded how terrifying the true modern world is?
1. Haydn - The Creation (con. Gardiner) ...greatest piece by one of the greatest composers 2. Beethoven - Late String Quartets (per. Italian Q.) ...in a league of their own 3. Ives - Concord Sonata (per. Kalisch) ...greatest American piano work 4. Bartok - String Quartets (per. Emerson Q) ...plays in Beethoven's late quartets' league 5. Messiaen - Turangalila Symphony (con. Chung) ...best 20th century orchestral piece 6. Ornette Coleman - The Shape of Jazz to Come ...Lonely Woman, best tune ever 7. Sun Ra - Atlantis ...the true 45-minute ticket off the island (off the planet) 8. Dusty Springfield - Dusty in Memphis ...the sound of hot, steamy love 9. Primal Scream - Screamadelica ...who needs drugs? If they're not available on the island, that is 10. Nas - Illmatic ...no explanation needed
Thanks, TripperRyder. You've got a pretty great list as well.
This is the second time on this forum that somebody has mentioned Sun Ra's _Atlantis_. I think I owned the Impulse! vinyl reissue once upon a time, but not anymore. I think I'm going to have to track down the Evidence reissue.
_The Shape of Jazz to Come_ is a great addition as well. In light of attention-grabbers like _Free Jazz_, TSOJTC and the Contemporary really don't get the consideration they are due.
Have you, by chance, heard Joe Henry's album _Scar_ from a few years back? Ornette guests on it. Wonderful, wonderful stuff.
Now Playing: "I Thought You Were My Boyfriend" The Magnetic Fields _i_ streaming on Seattle's KEXP.
I don't think I would normally post a Top 10 list on here, after seeing everyone else's lists and the heated opinions that followed. My musical tastes appear to be a lot more mainstream and would probably elicit some holier-than-thou reactions from all of you musical experts (you are experts, aren't you?) But, having said that, I am, as my name might imply, the brother of the Metacritic Music Editor, and so I bravely go forward with my post, with the assumption that all of you will bite your tongue for fear of being kicked off the site. Power by association is cool.
Anyway, I guess this is a Top 10 list of albums I have listened to many times and still like. If I am gunna be on the island a long time, I don't want to take the chance on newer CDs that I might get sick of at some point. So here, in random alphabetical order, is a list (and I made sure to include some female singers, cause don't you want to hear a female voice every now and then when you are stuck on an island?)...
The Cardigans Grand Turismo The Dandy Warhols ...The Dandy Warhols Come Down Depeche Mode 101 Chris Isaak Forever Blue Pixies Doolittle Portishead Dummy R.E.M. Automatic For The People 10,000 Maniacs Our Time In Eden Sarah McLachlan Mirrorball Morrissey Bona Drag
And also Barry Manilow's Greatest Hits, which I keep with me at all times, just in case.
If that's mainstream, Meta-Music-Editor-Bro, I think my list (back a few pages) is the equivalent of Spice Girls, Avril, Pink, Mariah, etc. I'll give props for your list....
Ain't nobody gonna get holier-than-thou on my brother-in-law or they will feel the toe of my boot in their crack.
Your list is perfectly acceptable, even with the Barry Manilow, since after a while you're bound to go insane on that island and Barry Manilow is perfect for crazy people to listen to.
I would have added one more rule to this "Desert Island" game...
No "Greatest Hits" packages! On the Rolling Stone issue of the top 500 of all-time, they allowed for greatest hits packages! WTF?
1. The Who - Who's Next 2. Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road 3. Dire Straits - Making Movies 4. ELP - Brain Salad Surgery 5. Michael Jackson - Thriller 6. Queen - A Night At the Opera 7. The Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers 8. The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour 9. Alanis Morrisette - Jagged Little Pill 10. Meatloaf - Bat Out of Hell
Lists like this always make me wish I had more time ot listen to more music. I'm gonna throw a list out real quick before I have time to overanalize it. 1. oasis- definitely maybe 2. radiohead- kid a 3. the doors- the doors 4. the strokes- is this it 5. deftones- white pony 6. new radicals- maybe you've been brainwashed to 7. beastie boys- check your head 8. dj shadow- entroducing 9. sigur ros- () 10. the verve- urban hymnes
Tough question, but ultimately neccesary. The Desert Island metaphor may not be that far away...so in no particular order and only for today...
- keith jarrett :: Staircase - the shins :: Chutes Too Narrow - jeff buckley :: Grace - the clash :: Sandinista - rickie lee jones :: Pirates - fila brazillia :: Power Clown - todd rundgren :: Something/Anything? - boards of canada :: Music Has the Right To Children - orange juice :: You Can't Hide Your Love Forever - gang of four :: Entertainment!
1. Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot 2. Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick 3. Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here 4. Radiohead - OK Computer 5. The Notwist - Neon Golden 6. Genesis - Selling England By The Pound 7. King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King 8. Can - Tago Mago 9. The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico 10. Doves - The Last Broadcast
Ok -- it is impossible for me to come up with 10 albums that would do this justice... but:
The Beatles: Abbey Road The Rolling Stones: Let it Bleed The Velvet Underground: The Quine Tapes vol 1 Nick Drake: Bryter Layter The Cure: Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me The Smiths: Louder than Bombs The Beastie Boys: Paul's Boutique The Pixies: Surfer Rosa and Come on Pilgrim (4AD release with both on one CD) Belle and Sebastian: if you're feeling sinister Pavement: Slanted and Enchanted (Luxe and Redux)
