I don't know if you know what I mean, but some artists will be overlooked simply because theyre on MTc and because theyre markerted and manufactuered, and the majority of rock fans or punk fans or whatever dismiss them because of the fact that they are commercialised.
I am talking about songs like Christina Aguilara's 'Beautiful'..I think this tune is amazing, it's so evocotive, shows great range,. beatufil chilling lyrics and agood video. But my first reaction to Christaina aguilara would be 'rubbish, commercislised pop' and if someoen hadn't shown me this song, I wouldn't of realised thatsome artists are overlooked because of theyre target market.
To say that artists are overlooked because they are commercialized is an oxymoron. What I think you mean is that in very insular indie cohorts, what mainstream songs are overlooked because all mainstream stuff is considered to be crap?
I'll say Hard Candy, the Counting Crows latest album (in 2002!). It is their best album, but nobody on indie music forums ever talks about it. I'm telling you, apart from the single, "American Girls," that album is great.

RL - I really liked that album back when I was on a Counting Crows kick. Even liked the single. "Butterfly in Reverse" is quite the pretty song.
------ Aren't there any girls out their who like good music? I need to and want to meet them. My favorite bands are Overkill River, The Nife, Songs:Ohio, and Nuetral Milk Hotel. Please let me know if your into indy music and like to go to show's and drink beer's and makeout.
eeerrrr.. I sorta like "Mama's Room" by Under the Influence of Giants and that "Juicy" joint by Better than Ezra earlier this year made me want to dance... being a Wedding DJ (yeah, sad..) I get every opportunity to love the overly produced/marketed/rotated bilge... but some of that crap has legs... who new Justin Timberlake's "Rock your Body" would have staying power? thank the power of the nipple.
nice topic. i totally agree about the christina aguilera song. i have always proclaimed my love for that song even at times when it would damage my rep. while we're on the topic of songs like that one, i think "damn cold night" by avril lavigne is a fucking great song. especially the vocals on the bridge.
coldplay is definitely talented as well. parachutes is a phenomenal album, and the other 2 are almost as good.
i also thought that shakira's song "hips dont lie" was pretty good this year.
"Toxic" by Britney Spears has got to be one of the best, catchiest pop songs ever written. I was in a store trying something on when I heard it the first time. I just thought, "what is this glorious dance music?" And then Carson Daly came on the radio and was like, "I'm Carson Daly, and that was the new single from Britney Spears."
I couldn't believe it, because I pretty much detest her music, but I went straight home, woke up my sleeping roommate to download the song, and we listened to it something like 40 times in a row. It was good times. In his groggy state, he said, "wow, this is a really catchy song."
...when I think about it, my favorite song of the year so far is "What you know" by T.I. A commercial U.S. rap song....it's not my style at all...but what a great song
AFI - Sing the Sorrow (I will never mention this album too much)
Word. MCR is getting props for their new album, but AFI did the same thing first, and better. "Sing The Sorrow" is near my favorite emo album, with downright catchy and anthemic "woe-is-me" tunes.

i realized this some years ago when all it took was a friend of mine asking me what i was defending exactly by being so defensive against something as undeniable as JT's "rock your body"
i realized then that i was being an idiot, and while many many things on the radio are still pretty shoddy, there's still a good mine of great tunes in there. i can't even say they're "guilty pleasures" or some bullshit anymore. they're just flat out good. there were some bumps. i had to realize the innate fun of things with "she wants to move" as it introduced the dumbest most tongue-in-cheek, love-or-hate line i've heard in a while ("her ass is a spaceship i want to ride") and some lines i crossed (i can't do "toxic", i know the music is great, but britney and that faux whisper-singing absolutely grated on my nerves), but mostly i had to just put a finger on what i liked, and the strange thing about marketed music is that, while a lot of shit gets unwarranted attention, the really great stuff is at a point where it can't help but get noticed too because it's people already in this position doing it. Beyonce's "crazy in love" is still pretty incredible to me and probably hasnt been beat since.
now i know futuresex backlash is trying to make fans sound retarded for accepting a hyper-sexualized n*sync-er and pretending he's different but... i cant get away from the fact that if the last half of the album was even partly as good as the first half it'd have a been a top ten contender of mine.
