Under the advice of Pitchfork, I picked up the Arcade Fire and Animal Collective albums, and wow oh wow are they great, especially Animal Collective.
I now completely forgive Pitchfork for convincing me to buy You Forgot It In People.

Much better than what I expected, definitely worth the good-natured razzing I took from the record store clerk. I should dust off my copy of Splitsville, Inc and give that another listen, too. Didn't find anything nearly as catchy as "Ponce de Leon" on the first couple of plays. .

The Splitsville was a dollar bin find, but I've found them spotty, at best, over their career, although Pet Soul was a pretty fine record.
The Shatner was a Christmas gift from a record label friend, and I've found it amazingly listenable. The cover of Pulp's "Common People" is a ripper, with great Joe Jackson vocals. I'm not a huge fan of Shatner's speak-sing, but it works here. Particularly when backed ably by people like Ben Folds, Jon Auer, and Aimee Mann...

Okay, this is the fourth or fifth time I've read this. You're serious? After Ben Folds' Fear of Pop I'd pretty much dismissed the Shatner album as a bad idea taken much too far, but if you're serious I'm going to have to check it out. Ah, the weeks before new releases start in earnest certainly invites strange flights of fancy... Now Playing: "On Green Dolphin Street" Herbie Hancock The Piano (Legacy)

Claudio Sossi at Shake It Up had this to say: quote:
Look, all I can do is be honest with you.
This is a great CD.
Sure, I put Has Been in my CD player with the same sort of expectation that many would have. After all, many of us know about Captain Kirk's previous attempts at what might loosely be called "music". Has Been is different.

I wasn't a huge fan of Fear of Pop but I am being totally serious about the Shatner record. I wasn't expecting much, but my buddy (who gave it to me for Xmas) played in the store where he works (and I once worked) and I started to get it. Repeated listens don't make it worse, but better. Worth a listen, for sure.

I was there last summer and saw that one as well. Good stuff. I got chills seeing Paul Simonon's shattered bass from the cover of London Calling. I'm a big ol' music geek...

I'm not surprised that the bass is there, but HD Manitoba's wrestling costume? I had no idea. That is just too cool for school. A field trip is definitely in order, sort of like seeing Brett's pine tar bat at Cooperstown. Now Playing: "What You Wish" Chris Potter Life: Live at the Village Vanguard (SunnySide)

Swapped out some old stuff and some duplicate Xmas gifts for these today:
The Pogues: Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash and Red Roses for Me (the 2004 remastered and expanded versions!)
Still need to get the other Shane records remastered...but I don't care for the latter two records by "The Pogues." The Pogues without Shane ain't the Pogues, boyo!

In my last real day off before going back to campus, I broke down and bought the remaining Pogues reissues (Peace and Love, Hell's Ditch, and If I Should Fall From Grace With God).
I also found used copies of
Chris Stamey: Travels in the South Dolorean: Violence in the Snowy Fields

Recently picked up Dizzee Rascal's Boy In The Corner. Was getting sick of listening to it on my computer and wanted to hear Fix Up Get Sharp in the club on Sunday. Glad I bought it. Also picked up Arcade Fire's Funeral. I know it's overrated and only has a few to a handful of really good songs, but Neighborhood#2 has been getting stuck in my head a lot and I needed to deal with it. Plus, it's always better to buy it when it's cheap, which it is here right now. Was given ZZ Top's Rancho Texicana double disc at Xmas, which is excellent and far superior to the old one disc greatest hits I had, with much better production as well. My girlfriend also got the Motown singles 4 disc box set, which is fantastic! Oh yeah we also picked up a James Brown box set too, I think it's the Columbia years, not too sure at the moment though, have to check it out later.

Last week's purchases - Arcade Fire - Funeral (to see what the fuss was all about) The Fall - New Real Fall Album Mastadon - Leviathan The Icicles - A Hundred Patterns (sugary sweet girl-band pop from locally based indie label, soon to be shamelessly plugged by yours truly on the Designated Shameless Plug thread because the bass player bought me a beer one time and she and her husband always volunteer to help with setup/teardown for the other indie acts that come to town.) .

Very nice stuff...thanks again for the recommendation. After a quick first couple of listens, I'm liking the baroque stylings of "Sky Meadows" a bit better than the Beatlish sound of "Strange Underworld". (That'll probably change once the weather warms up around here) Part of my problem is that I've got sooo bloody much new music that I'm having a hard go of giving all of it a proper hearing. I just recently stumbled across the works of Stina Nordenstam for the first time, and that's been getting most of my attention this week. .
