Let me know what you think Mark. No one has really discussed either here. I'm surprised about the complete lack of press for 'Greenland'. I think it's a pretty good record.
As most of the regulars know by now I'm the resident Frank Black defender.

Agreed and agreed. They got much more press for their greatest hits "rebuttal" and Greenland is a completely solid album. It doesn't pave any new ground, even for Cracker, but since that's never what they've been about and I'm a fan, I'm happy.

Greenland is a very sad, very dark record, but it's excellent. It just doesn't have any of the quirky Cracker 'hits' like Teen Angst or Euro Trash Girl, so it's not easy to categorize. It comes off even better live...

I just ordered, from Asthmatic Kitty,

Sufjan Stevens: The Avalanche

I wasn't a huge fan of Illinois, to be honest. I thought it had several great songs, a few good ones, and a whole lot of filler, but I liked it enough (and I liked Seven Swans enough) to keep him on the radar. Plus, you can't be ordering direct from the artist's label (for $12 total!) where the majority of the money goes into the artist's pocket.

Amen. All the following purchased directly from the labels.

Dirty Projectors - Gettysburg Address

Hmm, I thought it was their best album since Perfect From Now On. Chalk it up to a matter of (bad) taste I guess. Cool

We must have opposite taste. Tell me what you hate and I'll have a good list of favourite albums. Smiler

I loved Perfect From Now On though Keep It Like A Secret is my fave. The new one just has no energy and the guitars are...well, boring. I'll have to give it another try. I was really turned off on first listen.

I too liked the new Built to Spill. It was certainly better than "Ancient Melodies..." Some of the tracks go on too long in a prog-gy sort of way (Proggy went a courtin' ...), and it rarely hit the sublime heights of "Perfect from Now On" or "Keep it Like a Secret", but I have quite enjoyed it.

Well, my buddies told you how good Cracker is, but that ain't no surprise (and ain't no disco, either Cool).

The Frank Black is comparable to last year's Honeycomb, with the following differences:

1. Frank sounds even more like Van Morrison.
2. The band has practiced the songs much more, so, sure, they're "more professional".
3. This album is more rock-oriented. Honeycomb did make my Top 20 last year, and this will too, but it'a a broader, jazzier, countrier album, besides being more rock. The band obviously practiced a lot more for this album. This is comparable to a color version of last year's B&W, but more importantly, it digs a bit more into the soul.

P.S. This is David Lowery's most personal expression of love and loss. He does come off as someone who knows he screwed the pooch. Yeah, there are a "few lighter" songs, but most of them are so loud and pissed musically that you may not notice it until a bit later. Cracker's album is killer, a minimum of 80, and probably a bit better.

Like almost everyone here, I bought Thom Yorke and Sufjan Stevens today. Frankly, I am prepared for Thom's album to be kind of dreary, blips and bleeps without tunes. And Sufjan's album will probably be too long and repetitive. I hope to be proved wrong on both counts though!

Also bought:

Shapes and Sizes -- s/t
Moloko -- "Catalogue"
Muse -- "Black Holes and Revelations". Muse are, in essence, an utterly ridiculous band, but they're fun.
