Keane: UNder the Iron Sea
Stuart Staples: Leaving Songs/Lucky Dog Recordings
Counting Crows: New AMsterdam: Live
Old 97's: Hit By A Train: The Best of Old 97's

I realize whatever indie cool I have is negated by owning the Keane and Counting Crows discs, but I don't give a shit about indie cool.

Any initial thoughts? I've only heard one track for the first time this morning on random play on the CD player. So far, nothing unexpected, but typically well-crafted.

Well, that and the actually liking music thing. You lose a lot of cred for that, y'know.

I am going to add a tagline to your name, m.l. Something ugly, lasting, and potentially scarring.

Truly, I am.

Now Playing: Silence for fear of further mockery from the peanut gallery <-- THERE! are you satisfied?!!

good used stuff today

Richmond Fontaine - Lost Son
Hadn't heard of this album of theirs, but I like everything I've heard from Richmond Fontaine so far.

Staple Singers - Freedom Highway
So good. I'm guessing anything they recorded would be worth listening to.

Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks - Last Train to Hicksville...home of happy feet

Por Vida, the Alejandro Escovedo tribute

Be Good Tanyas - Chinatown

Daniel Lanois - Belladonna
This isn't as good as I expected

Muse - Absolution

As you pointed out, nothing unexpected. Well-played, well-produced radio friendly Britpop. A little edgier this time (more Radiohead, less Coldplay?) but not close to innovative. But, then, I didn't expect it to be. It's lovely music in the background, and sounds fine in the foreground, but ultimately doesn't do much more than that.

I guess to be REALLY indie cool, I'd have to hate everything in favor of something that only three people had ever heard. Maybe like this:

"Oh. You like Tapes n' Tapes? That's just commerical radio crap. I'm from Minneapolis, and there's this band called Pretentious Indie Prick. They only play the back rooms of record stores, and you can't buy a CD from them unless you write for a pre-approved magazine. Only a handful of people have ever seen them, and they're AWESOME! It's like Tapes 'n' Tapes without the arena rock pretensions. But, the first time they play a public show, they'll begin the inevitable downward slide."

Eric Malmberg was in a drum and organ duo called Sagor & Swing, they were Swedish I think. I didn't really care for them, but he was the organist and his record is just organ, no drums. If you are into early 70's electronic music (ex: early Tangerine Dream before they sucked, Klaus Schulze, Conrad Schnitzler) or last year's Delia Gonzalez and Gavin Russom record Days of Mars then I would recommend tracking it down.

Thuja is one of those Jewelled Antler Collective folk/drone groups, and Dead C were an abrasive drone group from the late 80's/early 90's. After Dead C broke up, one of them went on to form another similar group that is also quite good called Gate.

I just picked up:

Snow Patrol: Songs for Polar Bears and When It's All Over We'll Still Have to Clear Up

I was happy to find cheap domestic copies of these with many bonus tracks. I've picked up import copies a few times, but I'm glad I got versions with more tracks for under $13.
