"Gulag Orkestar" -- Beirut. Wondferful, warm and joyous. A cross between The Magnetic Fields and The Arcade Fire, by way of Eastern European music.

"Scale" -- Herbert. Very appealling electronic music with soulful vocals.

Yeah, an Aussie import. I doubt this one'll get US release...the last one didn't.

If you get it, make sure you get the 2-disc version, which has a whole disc of live versions of classic tracks from JJJ radio recordings.

Well, it's not background music. You really, really have to sit and listen. Creepy, minimal drone accompanied by Walker's vibrato. Occasionally terrifying. Like right now (five minutes into "Cue").

That Scott Walker record is great. It definitely isn't for everyone, but I agree with m.leland, you have to pay close attention to the details.

The Scott Walker disc raises the issue for me, is it possible for art to be TOO personal? The songs are so obscure, so tied into Walker's own personal obsessions and nightmares, that it is almost impossible to connect with them, except to react with fear/confusion/embarrassment. There are moments that are very powerful -- especially, for me, the last two tracks -- but again and again I find myself simply perplexed at what connection he is trying to make with the audience. At what point does a work of art become so introspective and private that is ceases to function as art and is merely a form of personal therapy?
