One of the best hip-hop records of the early 90s. Native Tongues is the shit. Check out Midnight Marauders bt ATCQ if you haven't already have.

just bought new SFA. BEST LP of the year. bought Andrew Bird ...Eggs. very good stuff. Both are creeping into annual Top 10 best list.

Everytime I listen to "Illinois" I am astounded by what a rich, dense, complex, and human album it is. Every song is packed with melody that anchors the music in the mind. Absolutely one of the 2 or 3 best this year.

Today's purchases:

"Small Sins" -- Ladies and Gentlemen.

"No Direction Home DVD". Why they have released the DVD here (in Canada) before the show has been televised beats me, but I would buy it even if it had already been on TV. The extras are not voluminous -- primarily just seven extra performances by Dylan -- but I am sure this is a DVD that will earn its price.

It's trying hard to be Echo circa Ocean Rain and not quite making it. Some of the songs are good, but as a whole, I'm not really loving it. I still think the best of the reunited Echo albums is 1999's roundly panned (see the Pitchfork review of Siberia to see the general critical hatred of that record) What Are You Going to Do With Your Life? which sounds nothing LIKE earlier versions of Echo. This is a weaker effort although it sounds more like the earlier band.

I picked up

Ryan Adams and the Cardinals: Jacksonville City Nights
Children of Nuggets box set

They're not officially out until Tuesday, but I've got a buddy at the local distro center and I'm now buying things from him at cost, meaning I get 'em cheap and early, which makes me happy.

Cold Blood's "Tranfusion" came in the mail Saturday and BB King's "80" arrived today (from deepdiscountcd). Deepd-cd is so late getting cd's here but they're cheap. I had ordered the new Ryan Adams from deepd-cd but they cancelled it saying the cd was discontinued(!) yet they still offer it on their site. So I'm picking it up at amazon, as I never know what the local stores will charge. I imagine the 9/27 releases I ordered from deepd-cd should all be here by 10/27- if I'm lucky.

Big Star- In Space (yeah, not out 'til Tuesday but...someone broke street date for it, so the store I got it at put it out early)
Young MC- Stone Cold Rhymin'
Edwyn Collins- Gorgeous George
Boo Radleys- Everything's Alright Forever

pE: We have formerly exchanged posts on the majesty of "What Are You Doing ...?" I agree with you, it sounds more like an Ian McCulloch solo album. I recently listened to his debut solo album "Candleland" again and it stands up wonderfully well.

On the weekend I bought Elbow's "Leaders of the Free World", which has been in heavy rotation. I loved "Cast of Thousands" and the new one doesn't disappoint if you want the same sort of insanely catchy British mope rock, in the vein of Keane or Travis, but with a little more edge and panache. At root, it may be vulgar, but it pleases me.

Also bought Grandaddy's "Excerpts from the Diaries of Todd Zilla", which so far is disappointing.

Today being new release day, I am sure I will buy Wolf Parade.

Wolf Parade - Apologies to Queen Mary

I wonder if it's going to stay up in the 90s or if it's going to come down as more reviews come in like usual.

Hey guys, you see how Pitchfork 'went out on a limb' today and gave In The Aeroplane Over The Sea a 10.0?

Who knew you could hype something in hindsight?

I could've predicted this in my sleep (as well as the sub-par rating of In Space).

That EP is definitely the worst thing I've ever heard from Grandaddy. Even their B-Side collection towers over Todd Zilla. I still expect very good things from their upcoming (last?) record. From what Jason Lytle said in the Pitchfork news article it sounds like this new one may be Sophtware Slumpish. (Though Sumday was fantastic as well. I just listened to that a couple hours ago and it's better and more poignant than I remembered it.)

Glad to hear I am not way off on the new Grandaddy. I hold out hopes for the new album proper -- Sumday and Sophtware Slump were both superb.

Re Pitchfork and Neutral Milk Hotel -- yeah, that was predictable. Didn't they recently declare the album the #1 album of the 90s? I don't know if they have ever given another album 10.0 -- which makes this pretty much the best album ever reviewed by them. Frankly, I've never clicked with it, but maybe I'll give it another try.

Today I did indeed by Wolf Parade as well as Richmond Fontaine's "The Fitzgerald".
