Delgados - Domestique (I HATE it when I "discover" a truly awesome band right after they've broken up)

Have you heard their other stuff? That's the only album of theirs I haven't heard; the others are amazing, especially Hate. I'm looking forward to Emma Pollock's debut solo CD which will be coming out on 4AD next year, I think.

I would recommend "The Great Eastern" as The Delgados best!

Is it worth me hanging around for the show, or should I retire to the nearby bookstore for a couple of hours?

Confused

While I'm not a big fan of emo, I like pop-punk stuff just fine. FOB toes the line...I think the punkier songs aren't so good, but the poppier songs ("Sugar, We're Going Down") are pretty good. My friends who were with me at the free-swag grabfest insisted that FOB was good and that they're great live.

The New Pornos are confusing to me. I think the first record was OK, but not as good as the sum of the parts. They put on one of the WORST live shows I've ever seen in St Louis. I thought there were several really good songs on Electric Version (I'll have to look at the tracks to confirm five) but I find the stuff I don't like on the NP's records (mostly Bejar's stuff) to be really bad.

After 3 listens, I think the Bejar songs on the new record are lousy, and many of the Newman songs sound fine. The only song that has made me hit the back button to hear it again is the first track, but I've not spent any time paying attention to give a considered opinion.

I'm going to a label meet and greet with the band in September, and to see the show. Maybe they'll improve upon one bad and one decent live showing...

These are the albums I bought over my vacation.

New Pornographers - Twin Cinema (They gave it to me on Monday!)
Sleater-Kinney - Dig Me Out
Lucinda Williams - Sweet Old World
Tracy Chapman - s/t
Paul Simon - Graceland
Dinosaur Jr - You're Living All Over Me

I thought I'd randomly mention I got them at Aboveground Records. I read a news story that people who haven't even been there are buying their T shirt as far away as Utah because it's some new trend, so people might recognize the name.

I really like all six of them. Twin Cinema might actually be my least favorite of the six, and I do like it quite a bit.

I went ahead and grabbed The New Pornographers' Twin Cinema and David Ackles' self-titled, the latter on KLT's recommendation.

Twin Cinema is a mess. I haven't listened to the Ackles.

I picked up Rodney Crowell - The Outsider.

This is an example of high metascore --> downloaded samples --> liked them --> bought it.

I wonder how many CDs I'm going to end up buying on September 13th. That list metacritic has is a whopper.

Twin Cinema has a really good overall sound and a few really good songs, but overall it's a kind of 'been there, done that' feeling after Mass Romantic and Electric Version. It's not really different.

The one that got me started was "Universal Audio"

I'll probably end up purchasing the entire Delgados catalog, though.

I guess that'll have to be on my shopping list next week.

Okay, I'll probably stick around for the show, then.

Looks like there's a decent slate of concerts right here in my hometown this fall...

We've got Sufjan Stevens coming back through on 09/12, the Pernice Brothers on 09/21, Andrew Bird on 11/08 and the above-mentioned FOB on 11/17.

Geez, this is almost as good as living in the big city.

(Brendan Benson was supposed to be here on Sept 16th, but I see that show just got cancelled.)

Just bought "Milo Goes to College" by the Descendants and "Golden Shower of Hits" by the Circle Jerks. Classics, but stuff I've never owned before. Helps round out my collection of California Punk.

I beg to differ....I just picked it Twin Cinema last night, and every song is great. One of the following may be song of the year: The Bleeding Heart Show....The Jessica Numbaers....These Are The Fables. I can't decide...I change my mind every time I listen....
I think there should be a separate post on fav song off Twin Cinema. Perfect 1-2 punch with Architecture In Helsinki so far....

Bought Twin Cinema and Black Sheep Boy (you'd think I'd have that by now) this afternoon.

I just bought the following albums:

Sufjan Stevens- Illinois
Portishead- Dummy

I'm searching for a store that has Ry Cooder's new album for less than $15. When I find one I'll buy the album.

I have to say I find Twin Cinema a bit of a disappointment so far. The first few songs are good and then I tend to get sick of it. I have always found Bejar's songs the least appealling on New Pornos' albums. I prefer his Destroyer stuff to the work he contributes to the NPs.

Today I picked up The Stands' "Horse Fabulous". It sounded reaalll nice on the listening post at my local store -- not earth shattering, but very likeable.

And even better, a reasonably-priced import of Supergrass's new one, "Road to Rouen" -- Yippee!!!

Well, I've never been a fan of anything Bejar does, Destroyer or NP.

Anyhow, I ordered

Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left and Pink Moon

These are two of my all-time favorites, so I'm glad to now own them. I got each of them for less than $7, new.

I recently got a copy of The Libertines self-titled release. I really like the songs "Music When the Lights Go Out" and "What Katie Did" as well as their single "Can't Stand Me Now. This is a solid record that I recommend highly.

I also bought Hot Hot Heat's new release, Elevator. I like it better than their first CD! I was almost ready to write this band off as a Cure-clone, but I really like the new CD. "Running Out of Time" is a song that I totally love. I also really like "Middle of Nowhere. I would loosely classify this CD as "feel-good-pop," but it's good and I don't regret buying it at all. Maybe I'm too easy to please . . .

I agree with Karen that the Libertines s/t is a very solid album. "Music when the Lights go out" is my fav track. They have that whole post-modern The Clash-esque sound. Thankfully if they are going to wear their hugest influence on their sleeve they have Mick Jones do their production. Their debut Up The Bracket is better showing for the Libertines though. If you haven't listened to it, check it out.

The Avalanches' Since I Left You is a great party record. For some reason I think sample based group The Go! Team or even RJD2 have more accessible records though. But the title track that opens just gets your ass shaking.

Last CD I picked up was The New Pornographers: Twin Cinema. Good so far but I'm still absorbing it.

Death Cab For Cutie - Plans

What I've heard so far is decent enough to warrant further listening, especially considering I liked their last album.

Kanye West - Late Registration

I'm ambivalent of what I've heard of this so far. But if I end up hating it I at least want to be sure I wouldn't like it if I listened to it. But I don't know..it sounds kind of like he takes great samples and mulls arythymically over them about how skool is 4 lusers.

Opeth - Ghost Reveries

I've been thinking about picking up an Opeth album for a while, and this was $10.88 due to being new. So I figure, why not bolster my 2005 album total in the process? (Up to 60).
