I scoured the used bins for Fruit Bats' Spelled in Bones, but no luck. Instead I came back with:

Loudon Wainwright III, Unrequited
Pulp, This Is Hardcore
Muddy Waters, The Father of Chicago Blues
Feist, Let It Die
Dungen, Ta Det Lugnt

That is some good stuff you picked up. How is the Dungen album? It gets rave reviews, but I'm skeptical of it for some reason.

I haven't listened to it yet — just the Pulp, Muddy Waters, and Loudon Wainwright discs. I'll throw the Feist and Dungen on the iPod for the commutes tomorrow and let you know. I'm skeptical, too, but curiosity won the day.

After my initial listen I'm a little underwhelmed. I'm not overly fond of psych-rock, so it's very possible I just don't get it. I'll give it a few more chances to win me over.

It was called cd warehouse. It was only used stuff, mostly made up of promo copies of comercially underperforming major label pop and rock albums. A lot of copies of Aaron Carter's album for instance. The dollar bin was probably the most interesting in the store, as they seemed to just throw the real bare-bones promos (the ones in cardboard envelopes) in there regardless of quality.

I did check out the place you recommended (the book nook on druid hills) and it was pretty darn good. When I have a bit more spending money I'll definately be going back in there.

How do you like the Bright Eyes? That's probably my fav of his, and I have pretty much all of it. "Bowl of Oranges" and "Waste of Paint" are two great songs.

It's really well-packaged. There's nothing new or revelatory, music-wise, but the comic book liner notes are well-worth the purchase, although I should point out, for the sake of full disclosure, that my copy (along with copies of the new Stooges reissues) was a freebie. It's nice to be back where I have record label connections...

Man, hooking back up with old record label connections is SWEET...I went to a label lunch for the band Institute (Gavin from Bush and a guy from Helmet, among others) and got free food and a free meet and greet (and show) plus a chance to raid the swag closet...

Picked up copies of

Under the Cork Tree: Fall Out Boy

The new All American Rejects (title slips my mind)

The new Blue Rodeo (SCORE!!!)

Will Hoge: Blackbird on a Lonely Wire

and a few others things i forget.

I also got (thru the website) two 'Net-only Marah discs, a live acoustic show and an alternate version of Float Away With the Friday Night Gods.

I bought

Mum - Finally We Are No One

at a record store in the city that I live in that I never knew existed. I looked through their collection of used CD's and I saw several Cocteau Twins CD's. I know the name pretty well, but I've never heard any of their stuff before. Can somebody who's listened to some of their stuff tell me about them?

Ditto! I bought the Dungen album last year when it got a great review on Pitchfork, and I have never connected to it on any level. In fact, I don't think I have ever listened to it all the way through in one sitting. It's just not my thing.

I've warmed up to it a little, and I understand why people are ga-ga over it, but, yeah, not my thing.

Busy day for new releases. I picked up:

Madness: The Dangermen Sessions Volume I
I Am Kloot: Gods and Monsters
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club: Howl
Rogue Wave: 10:1ep
The New Pornographers: Twin Cinema
Smash Mouth: All Star Smash Hits

The last might qualify to many as a "guilty pleasure" but I really don't consider any of my pleasures guilty. I like enough Smash Mouth singles to justify spending $7 for a 20 track best-of...they've always had a Nuggets-y vibe (maybe it's the liberal use of the organ) that I've enjoyed.

I bought the New Pornographers because it was cheap...I've been terminally disappointed in them in the past, but I'll give them another try.

I got a bunch of promos from Komeda, and the Dungen was one. I listened to it, but didn't get it at all. Maybe you need to be stoned to really dig it. Cool video, tho.

Well, I can say something good about Dungen. hal brought me a cd of it last month, so I've played it several times and enjoyed it every one. I never even heard of the guy. I'm not sure where I can hear anything quite like it anymore. My first impression was that it was a combo of the Beatles, other '60s influences and a jazz quartet. After I played it for a friend, he said it reminded him of Todd Rundgren's albums where he also played all the instruments. I've been playing it here in New Zealand too, and I certainly have no complaints. When I get home, I'll have to pick up BRMC and Super Furry Animals (even though I don't think it's released yet.) Later, Gators.

Like M. Leland, I can hear that the Dungen album is adventurous and challenging, it's just that I don't want to listen to it. It's like all those Godspeed You Black Emporer albums I have bought -- I admire the hell out of the guys, but I can't imagine ever actually feeling like listening to one of their albums.

Yesterday's purchases were, inevitably:

"Twin Cinema" -- New Pornographers. (P. Eric -- you found "Electric Version" disappointing??? It had about five power pop masterpieces on it!)

"Howl" -- BRMC.

Also through the mail I got:

"Listen, Listern" -- The Merry-Go-Round.

"I've Got a Feeling: The Best of..." -- Baby Washington.

Both highly recommended in the current issue of Mojo.

I'm coveting the new 2-CD best of the Easybeats -- "Singles A's and B's" -- but it is a rather pricey import. Any power pop fans out there who can convince me to get it?

Some recent buys...

New Pornographers - Twin Cinema (slam dunk)
.
Engineers - Folly EP (smooth and mellow)
.
Delgados - Domestique (I HATE it when I "discover" a truly awesome band right after they've broken up)
.
Hockey Night - Keep Guessin' (Nothing terribly original here, sort of a working-class version of The Unicorns; but I simply could not pass up something from a band named "Hockey Night")
.

.

Fall Out Boy is scheduled to play an all-ages matinee at one of our local clubs next month.

I'll be carting my teenaged daughter and a van-full of her Good-Charlotte/YellowCard-crazed friends to the venue.

Is it worth me hanging around for the show, or should I retire to the nearby bookstore for a couple of hours?

Confused
