unkle- science fiction. I cant believe I haven't owned this until now. The songs with Richard Ashcroft, Thom Yorke and Alice Temple are great. I would like to hear Shadow work with vocalists more often.
The new Old 97's is very impressive, even if starts out as an album that no one's supposed to like. Enjoy it if you're able!
Well, now that I've heard it more, I guess I meant to say that it's not as slick as "Satellite Rides", which was their slickest so far. This new one sounds like the boys letting their hair down and just sharing all their troubles with women, not really expecting anything good to happen.
It doesn't surprise me that reviewers find it not so entertaining. I think it's very memorable and important, but it's often a major downer, but that doesn't mean it's not great. Additionally, the production is a little ragged here and there, so the critics might not "get it."
Oh well, all that matters is that the listeners get it. I've never met a critic who ever knew more than a "knowlegeable fan."
This is humorous, touching and beautiful. What else, exactly, do you want?

"Naked Woman, Naked Man Where did you get that nice sun tan?"
I just ordered the newly released Judas Priest 4-disc box set, which looks damned good. I'll report back later (like any of you would be interested... but it's my job to bring you back to early 80s metal). It's got a good live version of "Victim of Changes" that I'm psyched for.
I'm down in the Dirty South (the ATL) hangin' with old pals and hitting some rock shows. I went to the record store that was my part-time gig for about 4 years and nabbed:
David Garza: Strange Mess (box) Housemartins: Best-of w/DVD Tommy Stinson: Village Gorilla head (free promo!) Old 97's: (new one...title?) (also free!) Strokes: both albums...used! Ryan Adams: This is It UK single and Wonderwall Uk single (2 parter)
The next three Elvis Costello 2-disc reissues, "Almost Blue" "Goodbye Cruel World" and "Kojak Variety" Rogue Wave: Out of the Shadow Phoenix: Alphabetical Lovedrug: Pretend You're Alive

OK, pE, you trumped me. "Out of the Shadow", which was recorded almost two years ago, and Sweeties' Comets on Fire "Blue Cathedral". They were both well worth the $15 bucks each.
"Naked Woman, Naked Man Where did you get that nice sun tan?"
Alejandro Escovedo Por Vida (P&C More Miles Than Money) Three years in the making, the fan club CD many thought would never see the light of day. It's not his best or even most representative live set, but he's still great in front of a crowd and significant proceeds from the sale go to defray Escovedo's considerable health expenses as he battles Hepatitis C. I have high hopes for the tribute CD I ordered this past week and hope to post a more extensive review (and plug) of it.
Craig TabornJunk Magic (Thirsty Ear) Many thanks to Sweetie for his tireless promotion of this one. I've posted my in-depth thoughts on it elsewhere.
Dexter RomweberBlues That Defy The Soul (Yep Roc) Yep Roc is rapidly becoming a no-lose label for me and not just because I scored a promo on this one from this one-time Flat Duo Jet. There's nothing to propel this album to my list of favorites for the year, but it's a rootsy good time that will compliment a mild August with the sunroof open.
Shrimp BoatSomething Grand (AUM) Thanks to philosopherEric for the recommendation and big thanks to my wife for lurking behind me in the music store as I hemmed and hawed over purchasing a four-CD set for the bargain price of $34. She snatched it away from me and bought it as a gift, which is all the sweeter since there's not a thing in the set she's going to like.

Nice work on both fronts! I never had any luck getting free stuff from Yep Roc, so kudos. And getting the Shrimp Boat as a gift...gotta love it!!!
On a related note: Yep Roc has been doing value-added stuff on their website lately. The Bigger Lovers record came with a free ep when pre-ordered from their site (I missed it!) and the Ken Stringfellow came with a live CD-R of his performance at South by Southwest this year...
This week brought the new Kings of Convenience and "Lost and Found" by Nashville singer/songwriter/folky dude Griffin House. I picked the latter up on the cheap, after a few good reviews and a quick listen to a few tracks. I wasn't aware it was a borderline Godrock record (lots of references to "Him" in the lyrics and liners) but I've enjoyed it so far. Not too preachy. As I've pointed out in reference to Sufjan, I don't mind faith-based music...I just don't like being preached at. As a dyed-in-the-wool agnostic, I can only take so much of that.
Twilight Singers: She Loves You (covers record from ex-Afghan Whig Greg Dulli)
David Kilgour: Frozen Orange (Clean mainman's record with a large chunk of Lambchop on board)
Also finally got the oft-delayed 3rd ep in the Ben Folds ep series, "Super D," which comes loaded with a rockin' cover of the Darkness' "Get Your Hands Off Of My Woman"!
The Ben Folds eps were good, overall, if spotty. If you toss in the "Bens" ep (with Ben Lee and Ben Kweller), it's been a nice year for Ben Folds. And he's got a new record due out in 2005 and he's all over the upcoming William Shatner (!) record.
I meant to post here today, but maybe I should wait until I can find what I WANT at a REASONABLE price. I went to my local record store today expecting to find three brand-spankin' new releases on sale, but no, they were all $18 plus tax! So I decided that some time soon, I'll drive a little bit further and hope to find them on sale. The ones I wanted were the new Finn Brothers, the new (and last) Guided By Voices and the new Drive-By Truckers. I'll post later, or maybe not...you don't really care, do you?

Hey, pE, how is this? I've been really interested in hearing it.
My take on it is that's it's fantastic, V. But covers albums are usually a crapshoot: if you're interested in the artist DOING the covers, you get a unified presentation. If you're interested in the covers begin done, you may wind up disappointed.
I'm a huge Dulli/Whigs/Singers fan, so I'm happy with the way he's done up these songs. He's indie-rock's great soul man, I'd say, and he gives great performances here. I honestly don't know a lot of these songs, which include covers of Bjork, Martina Topley-Bird, Mary J. Blige, Fleetwood Mac, John Coltrane, and others. But that only makes this MORE effective-no point of reference for me. I strongly recommend it for Dulli fans and those curious about the artists he's saluting here.
By the way, a recent Dulli interview said that this is the first in a TRILOGY of covers records (She Loves You, She Loves Me, and She Loves Me Not), the last of which he jokes will be about emotional devastation SO brutal it will be "a posthumous release." The second record, for which he's already got tracks recorded, will feature a cover of OutKast's "Roses" which he absolutely TORE UP in a recent Atlanta appearance.
He's also got an album with Mark Lanegan as the Gutter Twins in the works which he describes as "the satanic Everly Brothers"...

Picked up the new Bjork and the Scissor Sisters yesterday, will check them out this weekend. PE-I used to love Dan Bern(actually met him a couple of times-great guy!), but had kind of forgotten about him, how is the new stuff?
