I traded in a buncha old promos and crap today at my local and went nuts!
I picked up all five of the Super Furry Animals reissues, along with:
eels: Blinking Lights and Other Revelations Elvis Costello: King of America (2-disc reissue) Caesars: Paper Tigers
I like the Caesars, but I've got a beef. "Jerk it Out", which is hot because of the iPod ads, appears AGAIN on this record. It's the SECOND time they've put the same song (it's a good song, but still...) on a record. It first appeared on their first record as the Caesars (which, itself, merely repackaged the album they released for Minty Fresh as the Twelve Caesars) and here it is again. Talk about calculation...
That quibble aside, I highly recommend the Caesars if you are fans of garage-y rock (Strokes, Hives, Soundtrack of Our Live).
I picked up Mountain Goats and Eels like I mentioned early, plus I decided 'what the hell?' and picked up Animal Collective - Sung Tongs.
Edit: Oy...talk about depressing albums. An autobiographical album about child abuse and a narrative about a person who can't cope with the universe...maybe I shouldn't have listened to both these albums for the first time on the same day.

I've heard he has 2 new releases, one live that is mostly stuff from the last Magnolia Electric Co cd. Anyone heard either of these, and can confirm whether they're worth getting? I'd pick them up with a solid recomendation.
I was kind of wondering the same thing. I'm a little skeptical of the new path Molina's taking. I always liked Neil Young's softer stuff better than his Crazy Horse material, and listening to some of Molina's new live stuff (he's got some free downloads on his new website, I'm not that impressed.

Fantastic!!!!
I regard the Furries to be the greatest British pop group since The Smiths. And I am always right about these things!!
Today I bought, grudgingly, the new Springsteen, as well as the new Eels and Ben Folds. I have some concerns about the latter, but I am sure the Eels will be good.

I think you're close with the Furries (Teenage Fanclub steals the accolade of best British pop group since the Smiths) and the reissues are very well done.
I've had the Ben Folds for a few days, and it's a better record than his first solo record (which was spotty and marred by the novelty-esque "Rockin' the Suburbs"). It's very good, and, happily, only recycles one track from the collection of ep's he released over the past year (which were uniformly solid).
My one complaint about the eels so far...the crappy packaging. I'd pay an extra buck or two for a jewel case that won't scratch my discs when I take them out to play them.
I feel the same way about the Ben Folds packaging -- the special edition "book" format. I had to grip the CD tightly on both sides and wrench it out -- in about three more tries, it'll have a scratch that makes it unlistenable.
A similar packaging problem ruined my Louis Armstrong remastered Hot Fives and Sevens box set a few years ago. The box cost $80 and now two of the discs won't play.
The Fannies are wonderful too, but the Furries beat them for sheer joy and invention. But Grand Prix and Rings Around the World will both be with me on the desert island!
Furnace is Fiery -- how's the Caribou? I might have to pick that up.
Oh, yeah, I *hate* CD packaging that has a little sleeve you have to wrench the CD out from. Damien Rice - O is like that, Wilco - Being There is, Drive By Truckers - Southern Rock opera is...
Oh, and in the rare occasion I listen to Soundgarden - Down on The Upside, it usually falls out of the sleeve on it's own before I remember that it happens.
The best solution, it goes without saying, to the crappy packaging is simply to get a bunch of cheap, skinny jewel cases (the ones that don't take up much space on the shelf) and put the discs in there. I've got several discs that became scratchy from the packaging, and that got me fed up. Now I put the discs in jewel cases and file them next to the actual packaging of the CD.

Hey Peewee, it's a good, quick listen (40 min). Some of the shorter songs(some under 2 min) could have been explored further instead of getting an okay-i'm done-with-this-what's next treatment. Some of those instrumentals would get your head bobbing then it quits on you. Other than that, the tracks with his vocals were really good. Overall, has the chance to be in my top 10 come yearend. Manitoba was my #10 two years ago, and it looks like I will enjoy this even more with more listens.
"the sun gets passed from sea to sea, silently, and back to me"
Thx -- I may have to check it out. Today I picked up the newly remastered "Maggot Brain" by Funkadelic. Been waiting for this to come out remastered for quite some time. Freaky!

The lyrics, like I've said in a couple of threads, are easily his worst (and his best isn't spectacular):
"I pick things up, I am a collector." Robert Frost he is not.
I'll back off a little from previous statements and admit the music is more interesting in solid stereo — maybe even enjoyable. I am drunk, though. But all told, there's not a track on here he hasn't done better elsewhere.
If you play it loud enough and screw with the EQ you can drown out the vocals. Maybe that's the way to go.
np: Nine Inch Nails, "The Collector"
