I only hope the record is as good as the smokin' hot show they played at the Duck Room for Twangfest a few weeks back. The Bros Bielanko were in true rock-n-roll spirit, and well-lubricated to boot.

Bought the new Roots disc on the weekend, very disappointing. Only listened to it once, and actually had to skip a couple of songs! Seemed like half of the songs were decent, but nothing that made me want to put it on again. I should have previewed it first before buying, but my bad mood at the time led to a poor decision. Oh well.

This list covers a couple of weeks, since I can't recall what came when...
Kevin Tihista's Red Terror: Wake up Captain (see the thread in the INDIE section for more on the talented Mr. Tihista)
The Waxwings: Let's Make Our Descent The Veils: The Runaway Found (moody Brit-pop made by ex-XTC'er Barry Andrews' son Finn)
Ken Stringfellow: Soft Commands
Tim Rogers and the Temperance Union: "Play Spit Polish" (You Am I singer/guitarist's second solo effort)
Mutual Admiration Society: S/T (a cool collaboration between former Toad the Wet Sprocket singer Glen Phillips and bluegrass stars Nickel Creek)
The Polyphonic Spree: Together We're Heavy
David Mead: Indiana (I've wanted to like Mead's other releases but haven't...but this is quite good, including the super low-key cover of Michael Jackson's "Human Nature")

Most recent purchases:
Ashlee Simpson - Autobiography: I bought this one for the few songs I like a lot. It's an inconsistent CD, and I'd give it a C+. I'm a fan of Avril, Michelle Branch, and Vanessa Carlton, but Ashlee needs improvement and Hilary Duff just isn't talented IMO.
Maria Mena - White Turns Blue: a pop/rock/folk record that has some suprisingly hard songs, deeper writing than you'd expect, and quirky singing that has some Alanis but is all her own. This CD gets at least an A.

I'm fudging on this, but NEXT Tuesday, I'm going to buy the new Old 97's album "Drag it Up." Their last one, "Satellite Rides", was one of 2001's best. LT, pE and hal (or anybody else), what do you think of Old 97's?

I'm also looking forward to the Old 97's record, mark. I saw them kick off their current tour here in the STL a few weeks back and they were, as always, a fun live show. The new material sounds good. "Satellite Rides" was a really good record, and bore consideration for my "Best of the 2000's so far" list, but just missed. I liked some of the songs on Rhett's solo record, but it seemed a little too slick for my tastes... Along with the 97's, I'm looking forward to the US release of the Badly Drawn Boy record and the long-awaited Tommy Stinson solo effort next week...

These are some I'm planning on buying: Mclusky - The Difference Between Me and You is That I'm Not on Fire Broadcast - Haha Sound ltd edition You know the Boards of Canada - Geogaddi ltd edition that came in packaging that was bound like a hardcover children's book? Same deal with this. I found it at the local Borders, and I held it in my hands for like five minutes. I downloaded and grew to love this album a while back. It's good enough to spend 20 bucks on and get such awesome packaging, especially with an album cover as cool as this.
