Great, thanks Mike, I've heard of him but not heard him - I'll check him out.

Bob M's 'soul shakedown party' has recently revised my whole opinion of Sir Bob so I am looking forward to what else is out there waiting for me to feast on!

Thanks Mike and Fragile for the jazz/hip-hop recommendations. Those are on my hunt-for list now.

Tiger- There's a great reggae compilation out now, Serious Times which I recommend. It's a 2 cd set; the first cd is a continous dub mix of the full length versions on cd 2. Here's the 2nd cd track list:

1. Turbulence-Notorious
2. I Wayne-Living In Love
3. Richie Spice-Marjuana
4. Tony Curtis-Rolling
5. Jah Mason & Simpleman-Rolling
6. Morgan Heritage-Wall Of Babylon
7. Bascom X-Love You The Same Way
8. Perfect-Hand Cart Boy
9. Manlo-Lucky You
10. Morris Man-Home & Away
11. Fantan Mojah - Feel Di Pain
12. Sizzla - Ain¿t Gonna Fall
13. Nitty Kutchie - Ghetto
14. Gyptian - Serious Times
15. Qq - Poverty
16. Rob Symeonn - Chosen One
17. Turbulence - Notorious (Wabenzi Vocal Version)
18. Gyptian - Serious Times (Truth & Soul Vocal Version)
19. Gyptian - Serious Times (Truth & Soul Dub Version)

Really nice collection and something different than all the many Trojan label reggae comps that are on the market. Those are worthy too, but not always good on sound quality. Along the same varied line as Serious Times is Life Goes In Circles: Sounds From The Talent Corporation 1974 to 1979. Some great tracks from Dennis Brown, Abyssinians, Jacob Miller, and Two Rasta Man are on this cd.

Thanks - I will try but that growl growl satan is my boyfriend stuff is hard work for me - but I love a good thundering rock storm so we'll see!

Good thread... b0arder
Hey, I'm looking for anything really psychedelic that could remotely sound something like Forever Changes by Love (or any other of their recordings). It could even sound like Odyssey and Oracle. It doesn't really matter what decade either.

See, this is why this forum is such a joy - people who genuinely love their music. Thanks crazed for the recommendation - that comp sounds like a great map into reggaeland and will save me much searching and chances to roll my eyes and miss out on some smokin grooves.

Glad to help, Tiger.

Everyoneanindividual- here's a thread where psych was discussed a little and even less in this thread .

Bomp Records is a great site to discover what's available in psych music, from
the more well known bands to the more obscure. Some albums may be pricey there, though amazon & their marketplace might be cheaper. If you want to research further, check out their excellent and massive links page which I couldn't live without. Maybe it's more than what you wanted to know, maybe a few links are down but it's there and thank Suzy and the late great Greg Shaw for keeping the psych and garage flame burning for new listeners to enjoy for many many years now.

I have always tried to get into Roxy Music but I just never seem to accomplish it. I know that they are kind of a cult favorite but maybe someone can advise me on some songs or an album to start with? Maybe I need to sit through an entire album front to end before commenting on it or something. It is one of those things where I actually want to get into them but can't. Does anybody have any ideas?

Yay! This thread is workin like I hoped! I'm in love w/ forever changes, and yet to find any other album than can get that sound... I expect there's gotta be something from that LA scene but I can't find it.

P.S. Pun not intended haha.

Well, KidA, Stranded, Country Life and Siren ARE all 10s for me. Just play one straight throughout. Why don't you start with Stranded, since its first, but I'm sure you will have to accept their brilliance. Oops!! I just scotched the deal! Well, I'm telling everyone: those albums are so damn fine and so damn directly tied to why you like current music...shut up, mf!!

I absolutely love Roxy, but the self titled debut is actually my favourite. I love its vitality and sense of adventure. I'm gonna have to dig it out now.

Sorry to pinch your post, Frag. but if you were to replace "Roxy Music" with "Radiohead" this could be me talking.

Plaese don't mention OK Computer because I've got it and it just doesn't work for me. I'm happy to give other albums a try.

Yeah the 1995 classic that mark recommended will do the trick. If you don't like OK Computer then you probably won't like anything after it, including Kid A. So it is probably just The Bends or nothing at all for you Bob.

Radiohead has consistently put out good albums (which is what it takes to get constant forum mentions, I guess)... but they're just, eh. When they were new and fresh to me they blew me away, but the more I've been exposed to, the less they impress.

Have you ever heard anything by Love besides "Forever Changes"? If not then check out "Da Capo" and their s/t debut which will be harder to find considering that it is an import. Here I'll post two links.Love S/T Debut
Da Capo
That should be a good start if you want more just ask.

Does anyone know where to start with '80s/ '90s Lo-fi... I love Guided by Voices and would kindly take any recommendations.
P.S. I also listen to Sebadoh! Smiler

I've been listening to the knife quite a lot (way before pitchfork deemed it the greatest album of 2006). Anyways, any good electronica suggestions, perhaps similar to their style of electronica?

Some amazing electronic music that has come out recently and been in heavy rotation on my stereo:

1. Ellen Allien & Apparat - Orchestra of Bubbles. Must be heard to be believed, the immaculate production recedes into the distance with new details emerging with each new listen. Oh, and some of the tracks make you shake it, too.
2. Lindstrom - It's A Feedelity Affair. Awesome disco dance album, fun for parties but also rewards intense listening with intricate rhythms.
3. Matmos - The Rose Has Teeth in the Mouth of the Beast. These guys sample the strangest sounds and then make them into the most awesome music! Highly recommended if you fancied the stranger, darker stuff on "Silent Shout".
4. Herbert - Scale. Another storied sampler, but much dancier, more accessible stuff. Still fantastic.
5. Booka Shade - Movements. Great German house team, awesome dance tracks when played loudly, but intricate excursions when listened to on headphones, good for almost any mood, really.

You've probably heard of these, as they have been fairly well-reviewed all year long, but they are certainly worth checking out. Also, The Knife "Deep Cuts" is a worthy purchase - not as strong an entire album as "Silent Shout," but has some amazing tracks in its own right.

Hope this helped.
