Let's help fill each other's musical holes. Ask for some help from your fellow musical geniuses (such as myself, of course Wink ) finding out about that era, genre band or scene that been puzzling you.

My biggest blank spot is the indie groups of the 80's. I have a bunch of talking heads, echo & the bunnymen, cocteau twins, brian eno, and a good amount of punk, but fill me in on what you think are necessities from that time. It's broad, I know, so just go by your faves.

Yes, by now you're realizing how much I like love recommendations.

I'm not exactly sure what 80's "indie" is, but try these on.

Pixies -- Doolittle & Surfer Rosa
Sonic Youth -- Daydream Nation & Sister
Husker Du -- Zen Arcade & New Day Rising
The Replacements -- Let It Be & Tim
The Smiths -- The Queen is Dead & The Smiths
The Jesus and Mary Chain -- Psychocandy

A lot of people around here like R.E.M., but I don't that much. That said, you may want to check out Murmur and Document.

I think that PRG and eric pretty much nailed everyone, I will strongly second anything by R.E.M. because that is a personal favorite but I think I can add a few, some of these are stretching it but maybe someone can correct me if I am wrong:

Roxy Music - Avalon
The Fall - The Wonderful and Frightening World of the Fall, This Nation's Saving Grace
They Might Be Giants - S/T, Lincoln

That's all I got, I think that PRG and eric covered it.

Big Black, especially Atomizer and Songs About Fucking

Also, try Australia's greatest band, the Go-Betweens. The compilation 1978-1990 will get you started.

Not sure what counts as indie either, but some suggestions not mentioned so far would include:

Aztec Camera - High Land, Hard Rain
The Smiths - Hatful Of Hollow (I prefer this to the debut album), Meat Is Murder
Echo & The Bunnymen - Crocodiles
The Cure - Pretty much anything they released
Depeche Mode - Black Celebration, Music For The Masses
The Pixies - Come On Pilgrim
Stone Roses - Stone Roses
My Bloody Valentine - Isn't Anything
Happy Mondays - Bummed

Hmm, pretty UK-biased list. Guess I didn't listen to much US music in my early/pre-teens.

No one needs any help? Apparently I'm the only one who needs to get a clue! Frowner C'mon people... kraut-rock post-rock post-punk hardcore punk twee... there's gotta be something that you're curious about! German techno from the summer of 1983 (I can't help you there)?

That's a great shout. The Go-Betweens 80's output was unbelievably strong. Especially Liberty Belle.

Approach with caution. I'm a big Roxy Music fan, and this is probably my least favorite.

Roxy Music was Brian Eno's band, right? What would you reccomend PRG?

My collection's very deficient when it comes to the 90's. Recommend any genre, I'm pretty omnivorous.

Initially, probably, but then it was very much Brian Ferry's.

My favourite Roxy album is Stranded but I'd also recommend Siren

Eno was on their first two albums, but Bryan Ferry was really their "founder." The Eno stuff is good, but the three they made after he left are definitely their best. They are Stranded, Country Life, and Siren.

Then they didn't make another for like four or five years, and when Manifesto was released, let's just say it wasn't the same. Their line-up was different and they never captured the same sound. They released one more before Avalon, which was a commercial success, but was still lightyears away from the three they put out in the mid-seventies. Rumor has it the original members (maybe with Eno, maybe not), will be releasing an album this year.

Portishead, Chemical Bros, Radiohead, U2 were all Brits the last time I looked. Razzer

Nice calls tho - but I prefer Low End Theory when it comes to Tribe Calls Quest and 1991 was dominated for me by Primal Scream's Screamadelica.

Actually, I think U2 is Irish, but that is a technicality and your right, I missed the other ones. That is a problem of mine with regards to music, I don't really attempt to decipher between nationalities too often, but am sure that my UK collection is lacking.

Here are the best albums from 1990-1999 for me, with '96 and '97 being special years. I think that Buena Vista Social Club's album is an instant classic. Musicians that had been making music since the '60s, '70s richly filled with Cuba's definitive 'son' music and it wasn't until some American guy named Ry Cooder showed up, stuck them all in a studion and made this perfect album. He even paid them, buy yeah, you have probably heard all of these:

1990
A Tribe Called Quest – People’s Instinctive Travels & the Paths Of Rhythm
Yo La Tengo – Fakebook

1991
Nirvana – Nevermind
A Tribe Called Quest – The Low End Theory
U2 – Achtung Baby

1992
Björk – Debut
Wynton Marsalis – Citi Movement
R.E.M. – Automatic for the People
Tom Waits – Bone Machine

1993
Aphex Twin – Selected Ambient Works 85-92
The Flaming Lips – Transmissions from the Satellite Heart
Nirvana – In Utero
A Tribe Called Quest – Midnight Marauders
Wu-Tang Clan – Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers
Yo La Tengo – Painful

1994
Nas – Illmatic
Nine Inch Nails – The Downward Spiral
Nirvana – MTV Unplugged in NewYork
The Notorious B.I.G. – Ready to Die
Weezer – S/T (Blue Album)

1995
2Pac – Me Against the World
Björk – Post
The Chemical Brothers – Exit Planet Dust
Raekwon – Only Built 4 Cuban Linx
Radiohead – The Bends
Elliott Smith – S/T

*1996*
2Pac – All Eyez on Me
Aphex Twin – Richard D. James Album
Beck – Odelay
The Fugees – The Score
Jay-Z – Reasonable Doubt
Outkast – ATLiens
Weezer – Pinkerton

*1997*
Björk – Homogenic
Buena Vista Social Club – S/T
The Chemical Brothers – Dig Your Own Hole
The Notorious B.I.G. – Life After Death
Radiohead – OK Computer
Elliott Smith – Either/Or
Yo La Tengo – I Can Hear the Heart Beating As One

1998
Beck – Mutations
Black Star – S/T
Garbage – Version 2.0
Lauryn Hill – The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
Outkast – Aquemini
Elliott Smith – XO

1999
Beck – Midnite Vultures
Eminem – The Slim Shady LP
The Flaming Lips – The Soft Bulletin
Moby – Play
The Roots – Things Fall Apart
Wilco – Summerteeth

Thanks, mate. I own (and enjoy) the above. The rest I've never heard.

When you say "anything british" are you referring to the 90s or any decade? If it's the 90s, I can't help you but I might be able to weigh in with recommends from other decades.
