Along with iTunes 8.0, Apple threw in a little gadget called Genius, which helps create playlists in your iTunes. Find a song, click the "genius" button, and it'll throw up a 25-song playlist based on that song.
I'm not entirely sold on it, but it's a fun tool. I've noticed that it mostly goes by genre descriptors and popularity - hence if I try to look up something from Vampire Weekend, for example, I'll get stuff like Spoon or The National. Doesn't quite fit. But when I looked up "Everybody's Happy Nowadays" by the Buzzcocks it brought up a pretty great list of 70s/80s punk/rock that actually had a pretty decent flow to it.
What are your thoughts?
------ Aren't there any girls out their who like good music? I need to and want to meet them. My favorite bands are Overkill River, The Nife, Songs:Ohio, and Nuetral Milk Hotel. Please let me know if your into indy music and like to go to show's and drink beer's and makeout.
I enjoy it, there is still some work to be done on it, especially on the ipod end. There are quite a few bands in my playlist that it can't find matching material for. But the idea is... "genius"
I like it. It does a much better job of selecting songs I like than Pandora does. (Pandora just doesn't understand me at all.) I would rate it about about equal to last.fm for selecting artists that I like, but it has a clear advantage over last.fm in that it also makes an effort to select appropriate tracks. Plus, now that last.fm sends you to a different webpage for every clip you want to hear, it has gotten a little cumbersome and tiresome to use.
Can someone tell me if the songs actually need to be DLed off of iTunes? Because I tried using Genius on my friends' iPod and it didn't work .. I assumed it was because he used Bittorrent. Also, does it mainly use the "genre" and "year" descriptions to pick out the best songs? Because you can just edit those..
