I'd say that anything by Nick Drake is perfect to fall asleep to. It's slow melodies and Nick's barley smallish voice make it very relaxing.

Here's a list of indivdual tracks that I use to fall asleep to. The order is track name, artist and the albumn if I've known it. One of these tracks, the Nina Gordon one, you'll need to download from the net as I don't think it's on any albums - it is free from her site though, and it's probably my favorite.

Le voyage de penelope, Air, Moon Safari
In My Room, The Beach Boys, Endless Summer
Because, The Beatles, Abbey Road
Strange Fruit, Billy Holiday, All Of Me

You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go, Madeleine Peyroux
The Rocks and the Thunder II, Mark Knopfler, Local Hero
local hero-acoustic, Mark Knopfler, Local Hero
Lullaby, Martina Topley-Bird, Quixotic
Big Amoeba Sound, Max And Harvey, Xen Cuts (2 of 3)

Fun topic. When I was younger I had a paper route during the summer and when I got back at 6 after deliveries, I honestly used to fall asleep to Metallica and Pantera. Ah, youth. Now I don't usually listen to music when falling asleep, mainly because I'm married, but when I do, these are some I listen to:

Air - Pretty much anything
Sigur Ros - Ditto
Nick Drake - Ditto again
Enigma - MCMXC A.D. - Remember this?
Norah Jones - Anything
Brian Eno - Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks. Daniel Lanois produced this.

Agreed, great topic. It seems to me that a lot of succesful sleeping music is string oriented (at least for me). I also enjoy sleeping to some of the artists mentioned earlier (i.e. Sigur Ros, Explosions In The Sky, Godspeed..) but I think my all time record to sleep to I discovered in the early 00's. Nightmares On Wax-Smoker's Delight
The albums simple repititions and smooth slow tempo always had me out by track two.

Enya.. though I really enjoy her greatest hits during the day, too. I agree with Sigur Ros, though a couple of their songs build up.

I don't exactly know what it is about this album, but I can fall asleep to Enigma's MCMXC A.D. any time! It's very soothing to me.

Smiler

Oh man! I remember when that first came out... I was in first year university in lethbridge and I flew out to Montreal during reading week (coldest time of the year) and I wandered all over ile saint helene by my lonesome and this was playing in my headphones. I swear there was not another soul on the island. It was the most surreal moment I have ever had. 15 years later anytime I hear Sadeness Pt 1, Mea Culpa, or Rivers of Belief, I just go right back there.

Another great album (not just song) to fall asleep to is the soundtrack to The Mission. Ennio Morricone is a genius!

I'm actually kind of shocked because I don't think anyone has mentioned Pink Floyd. There is nothing better to fall asleep to that I can think of!

I'll second Pink Floyd... just don't try it with Dark Side.

Sufjan really works. And Sun Kil Moon. And M83's "Dead Cities..."

I don't usually fall asleep to music but the last time I did it was to that one. I've also fallen asleep to Souvlaki by Slowdive. Basically anything Slowdive is perfect "dream pop."
