Broken Social Scene (Huge band, dream pop bliss)
Feist
A.C. Newman (This guy can write a hook.)
I've always been a follower of anything David Usher does, but maybe thats just me. Also I have to second Hawksley. That guy is pure talent. K-Os is ok and there are alot of indie bands in Edmonton that kick....but I doub't you'd be able to find any of their stuff.

ok, bye.

I haven't seen that kind of false advertising since the band Texas, who hailed from Glasgow, Scotland.

I've always liked Harem Scarem, Change Comes Around is a solid driving rock song.

Sloan. One of the best bands from anywhere in the world right now. Which reminds me, I didn't mention them in my Power Pop of the 2000s list.

Also, if you're looking for something you may not have heard from another era, one of my favorite first wave punk bands was from the great white north: The Diodes. If you've never heard "I'm Tired of Waking Up Tired" or their version of "Red Rubber Ball" then you are missing out.

Maximum Jack mentioned Sloan, who should be far better known and loved in the US than they are. Their new NEVER HEAR THE END OF IT isd very good, but their best is BETWEEN THE BRIDGES from 1999.
Lots of folks love the twang/surf/western movie stylings of The Sadies, who play a great live show.
I'm not sure whether their stuff is still in print or not, but the late Billy Cowsill's Blue Shadows made two excellent pop-twang records in the earlu 90's that are well worth your time, and whichI prefer to the still worthwhile output of their country (and color) compatriots, Blue Rodeo.
Matt Murphy has done a lot of cool stuff both with his better known project Super Friendz and the way cool The Flashing Lights, whose WHERE THE CHANGE IS is one of the pop gems of recent years.
Sarah Harmer has made four strong singer-songwriter folk-pop records that are all worthwhile.

glad you appreciate sloan but i completely disagree with you on sloan's best album. twice removed can be considered one of the greatest albums ever by a canadian artist and one chord to another isn't that far off. between the bridges is good but power-pop to the nth degree. their earlier releases touched on many styles of music

Those two and Navy Blues are my favorites.

Frog Eyes are neighbors to the north. And while I always appreciate my ideas of Frog Eyes and what they sound like more than I really like listening to them, "One In Six Children Will Flee In Boats" is really, really great. Probably one of my all time favorite songs. And they're definitely worth hearing if you're into Arcade Fire or Wolf Parade because hey, Wolf Parade's kinda got their hands in both the older pies and it's all got some similar aesthetics. Plus people seem to like them more than I do generally. But how I always think of them is way greater in my head Big Grin

Can't forget The Weakerthans. They are so impressive. Hope they put out a new album soon.

I second the Blue Rodeo thing.

And (I want my) Nickleback can be deported as far as I'm concerned.

One band I discovered earlier this year (thanks CBC Radio 3 podcast) is The Pointed Sticks. Classic mid, late-70s era punk stuff.

Handsome Furs. It's by Dan Boeckner (the other guy of Wolf Parade), and surprisingly (nor not) great. While it's not Spencer Krug, it's very good songwriting in that Montreal style.

Also, why don't artists from the States collaborate like these Canadians?

Broken Social Scene, Wolf Parade (apparently), Swan Lake, and Final Fantasy (apparently) were reportedly formed through collaborations. All of those projects turned out great! I'm sure I'm missing many others.

The Raconteurs were okay, but it's time for more American artists to team up!

Well, arguing about matters of taste is a waste of time, but I disagree with the implication that BETWEEN THE BRIDGES is some sort of one-trick power-pop pony. I just plain enjoy the record overall more than the earlier records you mention - and I'm not alone in that. Check out what the Onion A.V. club geeks honored as their first "Permanent Record:"

I just realized that one of my favorite alt-country bands, The Sadies, are Canadian.
