I lived within shouting distance of Vancouver, BC for five years and listened to CFOX radio quite a bit. I discovered that there are, IMHO, some good bands/artists that get no airplay south of the border (Matthew Good, The Watchmen, Wide Mouth Mason, and so on). Any other good music from north of the border that any of you are familiar with? Any that should be tossed straight into music's trash bin?

Not sure if you're looking for suggestions, but if so, you should definitely check out the CBC Radio 3 podcast.

I'll point out the obvious, at least for me.

Sum 41
Nickelback
Evans Blue
Default
Rush

Of course, these are bands that get a crapload of airplay in the States. I don't know of any hidden gem bands if that's what you were wondering.

There was a decent Canadian punk-ish band that played in my city but I have no idea what they were called.

I don't think he gets a lot of air play anywhere, but Cadence Weapon is pretty amazing.

I live in Vancouver, and sometimes listen to the FOX, of course they play your usual crap, but I've heard some good stuff like Arcade Fire, The White Stripes, Tragically Hip (don’t like them, but they're ok), The Strokes and some good classic rock. I prefer the BEAT more, and yes I know it's a pop and hip-hop station, but when you're at work bored and bummed out, you need something to make you laugh.

There is definitely some great stuff up here. A few obvious artists (Nickelback, Rush, Sum 41, Tragically Hip) but the lesser knowns are great. Matt Good used to be big, Feist, Esthero, k-os, Hawksley Workman, Islands, there is a lot.

see if you can find Chilliwack's albums. It is "old" but I always thought they should have made it big.

Canada has one of the best "indy" music scenes in the world right now.

If you are into music, you should absolutely be jamming hard to the following:

Arcade Fire
Wolf Parade (or yes, anything w/ Spencer Krug)
Metric (and Emily Haines solo album is a must)
Broken Social Scene (and all the members inc. Feist)
Stars
K-OS
The New Pornographers (is Neko Case Canadian?)

and others already mentioned.

If I recall correctly, Neko Case is from Tacoma but wandered north for more opportunities. I run hot and cold on the New Pornographers; mainly I like them. HeyJupiter- I'd forgotten about Hawksley Workman, great stuff there. does Matt Good still get airplay on Canadian radio? I know he (and the band) used to, but I listen so rarely these days I haven't heard much from him. I've bought his solo albums off his website or Maple Music.

Great choices. Montréal's got a great music scene right now.

Others: Boo Hoo (heard about them on these forums), Malajube, Islands, and Sebastien Grainger (ex-DFA79 drummer in the process of recording a soul record)
