I was listening to Pink Floyd's Meddle tonight, and my favorite track from that album, "Fearless", incorporates Rogers and Hammerstein's "You'll Never Walk Alone" being chanted by a crowd.

Also, one of my favorite tracks of 2007, Okkervil River's "John Allyn Smith Sails" features a chorus that uses the melody and a good deal of the lyrics from the traditional Carribean folk song "Sloop John B".

So, my question to you, other Metacritic Forum members, what are some other examples of this?

Oh, and I'm not going for "sampling". That would make it too easy.

One of Beck's songs from Odelay ("Hot Wax"?) uses the melody and some of the words from "Jingle Bells" - timely.

It's from a Liverpool match, an English soccer (football) club. They sing it during every match, and Pink Floyd grew up Liverpool fans. The fans actually sing the song fantastically. If your a fan of the song, check out this version. It's excellent, especially the end:

I'm a big fan of the Bright Eye's song 'the calendar hung itself' which incorporates 'you are my sunshine' into the chorus.

Bright Eyes uses "Ode to Joy" in "Road to Joy" and it works really well. Of course its not a very complicated melody to incorperate.

Edit: Oh, and "Land Locked Blues" breaks out in "Taps" near the end.

Check out "Oh What A World" by Rufus Wainwright. In it, he incorporates the melody of Ravel's "Bolero" in the orchestral accompaniment to his voice. It's seamless, in good taste, and sounds fantastic with the number.

All I can think of right now is Paul singing, “She loves you, yeah yeah yeah” at the end of “All You Need is Love.”

The Jam totally lifts the guitar "Yeah Yeah Yeah" part of "She Loves You" on "It's Too Bad" from All Mod Cons.

I think there's a sub-topic within this topic of bands that revisit their own songs in other songs.

The National did this on Boxer's "Slow Show", incorporating the song "29 Years" off their first album, into the song's coda.

There was a Sunset Rubdown song put up on Daytrotter this morning called "Idiot Heart" where in the middle they play a little part of their own "The Men Are Called Horsemen There."

The Avett Brothers reference "If It's the Beaches" in "I Would Be Sad" from their latest album.

Sarah Borges incorporates a verse from Looking Glass' "Brandy (You're A Fine Girl)" into her own "Same Old 45" song.

Dread Zeppelin's cover of "Stairway to Heaven" ends with part of a cover of Three Dog Night's "Never Been to Spain".

There's some artist (Woven Hand?) who covers Bill Wither's "Ain't No Sunshine" in their own song, making it sound ultra-spooky. If it's not Woven Hand, I have no idea who it'd be.

The Velvet Underground lift the riff from Marvin Gaye's "Hitch-Hike" and use it as the intro to "There She Goes Again."

Galaxie 500's "Fourth Of July" repeats the vocal coda from the Velvet's "Candy Says."

I actually just noticed this yesterday: in "Success" off American Gangster, Jay-Z lifts a line from Eminem's "I'm Back" - "I used to give a fuck/now I could give a fuck less/what do I think of success, it sucks/too much press..."

Nirvana's "Territorial Pissings" opens with Krist Novalselic(sp?) doing an a cappella version of the Youngbloods' "Get Together".

The Jingle Bells melody is also used in the piano intro to Joni Mitchell's "River" from the album "Blue".

Nice work, EG!! Meddle is an underappreciated album if there ever was one. It's my #2 Floyd, next to Dark Side. I think Fearless is unbelievably great. The whole album is stellar, imo. Thanks for reminding me.

As for other songs...

I know Loose Fur use a verse of Wilco's Heavy Metal Drummer in their tune, Chinese Apple.

"Unlock my body and move myself at last
In the warm liquid, flowing glowing glass
Classical music, blasting masks are ringing in my ears"

I guess it's still Tweedy both times, but that's what they do.

Jarvis Cocker's song Black Magic uses a sample of the classic "Crimson and Clover"
Both songs are great.

Tired and wired we ruin too easily.
