Alright. My co-worker and I were arguing about this the other day. Mark Linkous (Sparklehorse) verse Mark Kozelek (Red House Painters/Sun Kil Moon). Both are meticulous perfectionists. Both are former addicts. Both are described as social outcasts. Both make kick ass music. So which of these two do you find to be the better musician?
Of course Kozelek has put out a lot more music, Linkous' three albums are pretty damn diverse. It's a tough call, but I kind of see their last two albums as a tie-breaker. Kozelek put out an album of Modest Mouse covers which was pretty underwhelming, while Linkous' new album is pretty damn refined. Also, I think Linkous sound is more diversed and he can "rock" out a little better than Kozelek.
I've never heard Aparklehorse, but I'm a big fan of Mark Kozelek. I think Ghosts of the Great Highway is his best work, followed by Songs For A Blues Guitar. I've never heard either of the first two self-titled Red House Painters albums though.
Tiny Cities was pretty good. My only complaint is that I think he chose a lot of bad Modest Mouse songs to cover. He should've chosen more from Moon and Antarctica methinks. Oddly enough, though, a couple of my least favorite Modest Mouse songs ("Four Fingered Fisherman" and "Tiny Cities") are two of the best songs on the album. So maybe he knwe what he was doing. Still, I'd rather he worked on another album of originals, especially seeing as how his songwriting has just gotten better and better over the years.
