Let's say you could make a band consisting of any musicians you wish. The catch is, they would actually have to be able to play together, i.e. egos and musical styles count (for the most part). This is different from merely listing your favorite musician per instrument. (And try to stay away from listing every member of Velvet Revolver and claiming, "they are the ultimate band!") Anywho, here's mine:
Lead Vocals / Guitar- John Darnielle (Mountain Goats) Lead Guitar - Joey Santiago (Pixies) Rhythm Guitar / Vocals - Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine) Bass / Vocals - Mike Mills (REM) Drums - Pete Brewis (Futureheads) Piano / Vocals - Chan Marshall (Cat Power) Multi / Vocals - Jeff Magnum (Neutral Milk Hotel) MC - Mike Skinner (the Streets)

My supergroup leans toward the noisier end of the musical spectrum, and I figure they'd cooperate long enough for one album if enough alcohol was provided:
Vocals: David Yow Lead Guitar: Buzz Osbourne Rythm Guitar: Lee Renaldo Bass/Vocals: Lemmy Viola/Organ: John Cale Drums: Russel Simins Tambourine/Self-Mutilation: Iggy Pop
I kind of agree with Soadlover...I really don't think we can figure out if these people are going to be able to get along together or not!
Some of these people would change, but at the moment, here's who would be in my dream band:
Keyboards: Keith Emerson - Emerson, Lake & Palmer Drums/Percussion: Carl Palmer - Emerson, Lake & Palmer Bass: John Entwistle - The Who Lead Guitar: Angus Young - AC/DC (guilty pleasure) Male Vocal: Roger Daltrey - The Who Female Vocal: Pat Benatar Brass: Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes Miscellaneous: Flute - Ian Anderson - Jethro Tull
As an individual who spends far too many nights on a bar stool engaging in incredibly uninformed arguments about locker room politics I can only guess at, I think the caveat "...would actually have to be able to play together, i.e. egos and musical styles..." is great. I mean, let's just try to combine about half the members of Lola's band and asc85's band and see what happens. Well, Lemmy and Angus would probably be fine together, but perhaps you get the idea.
That being said, I can't think of a single dream band. There are too many options to choose from, straight-up rock 'n' roll, power pop, alt-country, you name it. So, I guess this will be only the first of a number of lists. The challenge for me, at least, is a bunch of musicians who I think would sound great together, that really haven't worked together (I may need pE to check my work):
Vocals: Marshall Crenshaw (let's let him play rhythm guitar, too...his chops have come a long way) Lead Guitar: Richard Thompson Bass: Don Dixon (he's co-producing, too) Keyboards: Steve Nieve Drums: Jim Keltner (I swear, this will be the one and only time I will invoke Jim..he's so versatile, it seems a cop out, though it might also break my former rule as he's worked with EVERYBODY)
I'm going to ponder the ultimate power pop lineup if pE doesn't beat me to it (not too big a hint, eh?)
Fun topic, rockbotle. Good work.
Now Playing: "Cattle and Cane" The Go-Betweens Before Hollywood (Beggar's Banquet)
I thought about this for about five minutes, so I'm sure that I'm forgetting plenty. That just means I can have several fantasy bands.
Male Vocals: Grant Lee Phillips (w/or w/o Buffalo) Female Vocals: Bjork Guitars: Johnny Marr, Jonny Greenwood Bass: Paul McCartney (Beatles Era) Drums: Billy Doherty (Undertones) Piano: Jools Holland (Squeeze, The The) Strings, Synthesizers, Keyboards: Edwin Jobson (Roxy Music) Oboe & Saxophone: Andrew Mackay (Roxy Music) Extra Guitars/Keyboards/Feedback/Producer: Ira Kaplan (Yo La Tengo) Toastmaster MC: Ranking Roger (English Beat) Several members can lend a hand on vocals.
Maybe the next fantasy band will be all-female.

I take the challenge, LT.
Here's a start...
Guitar, vocals, production: Jason Falkner Drums, vocals: Andy Sturmer (of Jellyfish) Vocals, guitar: Tommy Keene Bass, vocals: Matthew Sweet Pianos/keyboards, vocals: Ben Folds Lead vocals (on the rockin' songs): Robin Zander
Spiritual songwriting muse: Chris Bell (of Big Star)
You could sub Ric Menck for Sturmer, who was great in Jellyfish but has done zilch since, without too much of a complaint. It was also be easy to slot in Ken Stringfellow and/or Jon Auer of the Posies, Paul Collins, and Pete Ham.
The greatest theoretical album of all time would be:
Vocals - Adam Drucker from Clouddead Saxophone - Peter Brotzman or one of the members of Borbetomagus Gong/homemade electronic console - Geeky dude from Wolf Eyes Drums - Manu Ros from Giddy Motors
and they do a full-album cover of Here Comes The Indian by Animal Collective. That would theoretically destroy everything ever.

Oh no, the end of relity as we know it. And I was just getting used to it to. Let's hope this never happens.Stop these people from ever meeting. And to think, I haven't heard of any of these guys. My brain hurts.

How about this? Lennon,McCartney,Harrison,Dylan ,Jagger and an un-named drummer. We call them "The Masked Marauders" and they do a cover of Donovans "Season of the witch".

Was this a response to my power pop group? I wouldn't think they would be a brain wracker...
And to flem_snopes: although I've never heard Puffy AmiYumi, I've never liked any Japanese pop that I've listened to, particularly not the Japanese girl pop. Should I try this one?

Most Americans' exposure to Puffy AmiYumi comes from hearing them do the theme song for Cartoon Network's "Teen Titans" show.
They're a bit more Beatles-influenced (and a lot less techno) than your average cutesy j-pop band.
Andy Sturmer does the producing, writes all the songs and plays most of the instruments.
I figure it's the closest we're gonna ever get to a new Jellyfish album.
.

No phil, not at all. I've often lulled my self to sleep contemplating who would be in my rockestra (a la Playboys rock and pop polls), but I've never filled all the spots to my satisfaction. Just thinking about the possabilities strains my brain.
Now, lets get back to "The masked marauders". Theres more to this than meets the eye.
I did get Puffy AmiYumi's last American album, which I believe was a collection (unbeknownst to me), and I enjoyed it, but after awhile, the upbeat poppiness started to get to me, so maybe they're better in small doses.

There's a lot of singers here...whose singing lead?
If they're doing covers, why have Dylan in the band? His guitar work isn't so hot and his voice, for the most part, is an acquired taste.
It's pretty impressive, though, that your Fantasy Rock n' Roll Supergroup is 3/4 of the Beatles...sorta says something about them, eh?

Your still not getting it . Maybe its time to google.
