Alright, I usually like these lists a little more than the "what's your favorite bands ever?" lists since everyone just lists the obligatory classics and it leaves very little room for interesting choices. Plus, we have enough nostalgia in this culture right now, let's focus on the present (or the near present anyways) and the future. Given the past 5 years or so, name your 5 favorite bands who are still making music, and good music right this very nanosecond.
My list:
1. Sigur Ros 2. Modest Mouse 3. The Flaming Lips 4. Radiohead 5. Interpol 6. Wilco 7. The Shins 8. Godspeed You Black Emperor 9. Broken Social Scene 10. Magnetic Fields
Yes, I know I'm painfully unoriginal in choosing a bunch of current indie all-stars, but I'd be lying to myself and to you to place a different band on that list.
Death Cab For Cutie Clinic Black Heart Procession Black Rebel Motorcycle Club The Clientele The Delgados Grandaddy Spoon The White Stripes And my newest pet: TV On The Radio
(no order) radiohead modest mouse the books wilco xiu xiu microphones yo la tengo sonic youth flaming lips bonnie prince billy (i just got i see a darkness a few months ago, so it seems fresh to me)
Radiohead the Shins Franz Ferdinand British Sea Power Modest Mouse the Flaming Lips Sigur Ros Interpol Spoon the Super Furry Animals
Godspeed would make the list, but they seem to be done, at least at the moment, and Silver Mt. Zion seems to be obsessed with Efrim's voice for no particularly good reason.
1. Modest Mouse 2. British Sea Power 3. Pernice Bros. 4. Interpol 5. GBV 6. Magnetic Fields 7. Morrissey 8. Pixies (do they count?) 9. Aluminum Group 10. Wrens
hmmmmmmmmm. this very moment eh? neutral milk hotel cee-lo green the pixies mf doom trail of the dead tom waits ellen allien the apes the constantines songshia
ah yes, apparently i broke one of the rules already. note to self: read, don't skim. actually i would technically have to remove songshia as well. don't i look the fool?
While I understand why people put The Pixies on their list, however, I wouldn't classify them as an "active" band even though they're playing live again, considering ya know, they haven't released a new album in well over a decade. It's the same reason David Bowie doesn't/shouldn't count

Nah. It was always just Molina anyway, it hasn't really changed now that he dropped the moniker.
Ween, Nile, Queens of the Stone Age, Yeah Yeah Yeah's, Fantomas, the White Stripes, Outkast, Dead Prez and Tool. I went with only bands, which left off individual artists. So I'll also mention Tom Waits, Peaches, MF Doom, Kool Keith, Prince, the Streets, Ramm Ell Zee and anything involving Mike Patton.
"If it were beneficial, their father would produce children already circumcised from their mother. Rather, the true circumcision in spirit has become profitable in every respect." -Jesus, from the Gospel Of Thomas
Radiohead. The Soundtrack of Our Lives, Loretta Lynn and the Do-Whatters, The Shins, OutKast, The Icarus Line, The White Stripes, Les Savy Fav, Paul Kelly and whatever he calls his band now, maybe Mclusky (Metacritic, take the hint.)
