But outside of Eno, I cannot get into "Expiremental Pop".
Expirimentation with a Rock or Prog sensibility - Dynamite.
Expirimentation with a Pop sensibility and you're not the Beatles or Brian Eno, I ain't buying it.
The sensibilities just don't go together in my bock, so bands like XTC, Brian Wilson/Late Beach Boys, They Might Be Giants, Animal Collective, Broken Social Scene, Architecture in Helsinki, and The Earlies to a bit lesser degree all do very, very little for me...though I've given all of these artists many, many chances.

Great, but not that much....
I just don't get the Arctic Monkeys at all. Congratulations to them for breaking through, and good luck. I'm not trying to get on some trendy backlash or any of that shit - I heard their album months before it came out, while the hype was slowly building, and I just couldn't understand who would be passionate about this. Then again, I think Cyndi Lauper is fantastic, so let the laughter commence...
James Blunt or Maroon 5. It's a tossup. When that Maroon 5 record initially came out we didn't sell a single copy at the record store I work at for over a year. All of a sudden one day, the radio jumped on that bandwagon and sales skyrocketed. From the first instance that I heard them I thought it was the single most contrived garbage I had ever heard. The vocals are so overprocessed that it doesn't even come close to resembling an actual human voice.
As for James Blunt, his song "Beautiful" makes me want to just start stabbing people. That can't be a positive thing.
I agree with the Arctic Monkeys too. I heard that record one time and thought "hmmmm..... terrible."
I can't get into The Strokes much at all. It's competent, catchy indie pop/rock, and that's fine. Just doesn't do it for me.
Same thing with Tool. Their drummer is outstanding, and Maynard has fantastic singing abilities. And I appreciate their slightly progressive stance. But emotionally, it doesn't affect me in the slightest.
Bruce Springsteen...I can see his talent pretty clearly in his solo work, especially "Nebraska." But the E-Street band stuff leaves me thinking, "This guy is a 'legend'? Uh, seriously?"
Then again, I've been laughed at for claiming Crowded House has made the best 3-minute pop songs since the Beatles (listen to "Distant Sun" a few times and disagree! I dare you!)..
BTW, I have no problem with Cindi Lauper

OK i get it you start screaming your lyrics, about someones childhood or nuaced affair, three quarters through and youve bought song development at discount price. its silly sentimental and exploitive muisc. And yet the words can be brilliant. but words are words and not music

I couldn't disagree more. Yeah, I like Darnielle's lyrics as much as the next guy, but if I didn't like the music, I wouldn't bother with the Mountain Goats. I feel like over the years he's gotten better and better at writing songs. His last three records have been really solid, and the studio production only adds to his appeal. He's also increasingly introducing new elements into his songs, like piano and cello (see "Dilaudid").
Another big plus is that he's prolific. Dude puts out an album every year. Not many guys you can say that about these days, Ryan Adams and Jason Molina notwithstanding.
-------------------------------------------------- Anatomy to me is a homesick stomach and a broken heart
I've been waiting for a chance to rant a little about artists/albums that do nothings for me, so here I go:
- Neutral Milk Hotel. I feel really, really bad that I just can't get into "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" considering how praised the record is and how valued it is in the indie-music community (a community I try to be a part of and deeply respect). No matter how many times I listen to this album, it just doesn't do anything for me, no matter how much I want it to do something for me. I like folksy fuzz-rock, and I thoroughly enjoy stuff such as Animal Collective and recently Beruit. What is it, exactly, that makes people love this album so much?
- OK Computer. I absolutly love "Paranoid Android" and I think "Fitter Happier" is a great addition to the album... but I can't seem to get into the rest of the album, no matter how hard I try and how many times I listen to the album. I love "The Bends," "Kid A," "Amnesiac" and "Hail to the Thief," but I just can't seem to get into OK Computer.
- Tool. A lot of people on the Metacritic forums sing the praises of Tool, but I just. don't. see it! I've recently listened to Lateralus and AEnima (how do I spell that, btw?), but they did nothing for me. I can hear the instruments, and the words. But that's it. I can hear the music. But it doesn't do anything for me. Now a heavy rock/metal band like VAST, that I can listen to and get some kind of emotional reaction from. But just not tool.
There's lots, lots, lots of other stuff that I just don't....get, but these are the big three.

That's good. For a while I was beginning to suspect you suffered from severe hearing damage, but apparently this is merely a case of unspeakably poor taste in music.
Don't worry, though. If you stick around here long enough, we'll try to do our best to help you along in your musical rehabilitation. You may yet be saved.

Sorry, I just can't get into Tool. I don't know what's wrong with me. But then again, isn't every person ultimately going to have varying tastes in music? Perhaps I was never meant to like Tool. Although I think if someone ever told me that they were never meant to like Radiohead, my initial reaction would be whack them in the head a few times.
Again, I've actively listened to Tool and tried to get myself to have some kind of reaction to the music, but nothing seems to be happening. I'll keep on trying, but I think I'm a lost cause when it comes to intelligent heavy metal. When I try to listen to Tool, I just want the reverb and swearing to go away, and then I go hide in a corner and listen to The Smiths.
I've never been a fan of metal, so that's probably got a lot to do with it. And I can understand the appeal of Tool - it's heavily polished, articulate, aggressive rock music. Just not my cuppa tea... at least not yet.
I would like to think, though, that I do have good taste in music, and at least an informed view of music. I don't listen to MTV / Top 40 radio crap. I get 80% of the music I listen to from eMusic, and I check Metacritic.com and Pitchfork.com regularly. So at least there's my case for being informed.

Please remember: we wouldn't talk to you unless we liked and respected you, and we hoped you had a sense of humor. I'll admit that things sometimes seem glum around here, but if you read closely, it's really a barrel of laughs.
"Naked Woman, Naked Man Where did you get that nice sun tan?"
I was just messing with you, Droganzundt. I've never even listened to Tool. I really have no idead what they sound like, though I don't really like metal, so I doubt if I'd even like them. And another thing: usually, if you see one of these-- --or one of these-- --it means not to take seriously whatever was just said.
But anyways, welcome to the forums, dude.

How the fuck are you terrible at detecting sarcasm with a signature like that... Anyway, I am of course only joking, and hello to you my fine (wo)man (?) I've never heard Tool, so perhaps I wouldn't get them either for all I know. In closing, I must say I'm delighted with the love being expressed for Cyndi around this place. Now, I must get back to wasting my day playing song/movie tag with P-Bo, crazed, mark, Carlito and sundry others...
If this album does not grow tremendously during listenings 10-20 or something, I am going to declare it as something I just do not ... get. It's unoffending and not bad, but that's it.
I just don't get Fall Out Boy or Panic! at the Disco, yet I don't want to. They are big right now especially with some of my friends, but I hate them. Their peppy rock doesn't fly with me, they just sound stupid, untalented and wussy. You only need to read their lyrics to see how shallow they are.
Nor do I get 3 Doors Down. Some of their songs are catchy, but, as is a common criticism of them, the songs all sound the same! One after another the songs feel like recycled products of the previous ones.
But the band I have most wanted to "get" but still cannot "get" is Foo Fighters. I really want to like them, especially being the product of Dave Grohl, formerly of my beloved Nirvana, but I don't. Songs like "All My Life," "Everlong," and "Learn to Fly" have great hooks, but thats about it. "My Hero" is pretty bad and their new songs "Best of You" and "DOA" fall completely flat. The only song I really really like from them is the acoustic version of "Everlong" (btw, anyone know what album it's from, if its even on one?).
