I set up this discussion because I want to see what people think about this year's awards. In my opinion, this could be the worst year the show has ever seen. Not necessarily due to the nominations (Kanye West and Amy Winehouse shall dominate), but as to how they took away more than ten categories and added some overall horrible ones. Plus, some categories received more nods than others. With all of that and more to criticize, here are the nominees in case anyone is interested:

Wow, to think that a group who is already into their third album is just now a "new artist" is disturbing.
It's not as bad as Fountains of Wayne getting a Best New Artist Grammy nomination, after they'd had a string of minor radio hits before "Stacy's Mom." At least Peter, Bjorn and John only broke into America with this album.
------ Aren't there any girls out their who like good music? I need to and want to meet them. My favorite bands are Overkill River, The Nife, Songs:Ohio, and Nuetral Milk Hotel. Please let me know if your into indy music and like to go to show's and drink beer's and makeout.

Yeah. Same here. Is anyone other than me surprised at the lack of traditional categories and/or the addition of ridiculous ones? "Monster Single of the Year"? Anyways, some other things that shocked me:
1. Amy Winehouse - knew she'd get a BNA nod, but a VOTY nod? I've never seen the full video for "Rehab", but I've heard her videos could be much better 2. Avril Lavigne - only nominated for Monster Single of the Year. personally, I think this category was set up to ensure that a lot of the crappy videos MTV viewers adore will at least get nominated so their viewers are so happy Yeah I hate it 3. Kanye West - the song hasn't even become a hit yet and I think it was released after the cut-off date. I still love the song, though 4. Peter Bjorn and John - Glad they got in because I love the video and song for "Young Folks" 5. Justice - never heard of the song and I want to say I've heard of the artist somewhere before... 6. Kelly Clarkson - no love. After two years in a row winning Best Female Video (a possibly defunct category now ), she didn't even get nominated for Best Editing or anything like that
The VMAs are going to be very odd this year. I saw what looked like an auditorium during the telecast of the nomination announcement. If that's where the VMAs are going to be held, then it'll probably be the smallest venue ever for a VMA ceremony. Also, there's a rumor that Britney Spears is supposed to perform... and Timbaland was questioned about. He said he was in control and didn't really give an answer. This leads me to believe that she will... this should be very interesting

When did they start sucking? It must've been by the early to mid nineties, maybe earlier.

When did the Real World start? That is when MTV jumped the shark. It figured out it could put up mindless reality shows and keep the kids from channel surfing as much.
